The Tower of London

The Martin Tower

London’s tower has a long history, butil by the Normans as a Fort and a reminder to the citizens of the city who was boss—it has continued and been both a fort, then a castle where royalty lived and eventually, especially so during the Tudor’s dynasty, became a jail and a place of execution for Queens and their accused consorts among others..

So it is no surprise that there are ghosts in the tower—or at least that’s what the story says–one of them is one of those Tudor Queen–Henry VIII’s second wife  Anne Boleyn  but it was his first marriage that ended in seperation—that of her head from her body. Henry had divorced his first wife which requiired  his making himself head of the church and seperating completely from the Catholic faith—one of the few conversions due to lust for the flesh, rather than a conflict of the conscious.

Anne like his first wife Catherine only gave Henry a daughter, not the son he was set on and obcessed with having—however she did not have an Emepor for a nephew like Catherine and so was (along with several men—including her own brother) found quilty of adultery (they dropped the incest charges but still beheaded the brother—in the Tower grounds) and died by the sword (another story but this is getting too long already).

Anne’s ghost had reportedly been see in this tower where reportedly she was held prisoner.  But it isn’t just her ghost—people’s ghost are so expected as you circulate about London.  But the tower also for years (into the early 1800s) held a large group of animals which might explain the sighting of a huge bear near the door to this tower in 1815.

It is said that the creature advanced the guard thrust his bayonet into it, but hit nothing exept the door that was behind the apparation at the time.  The story goes on to say that a few day later following this he ollapsed and died.

 The Lady in the Tower

One of history’s most complex and alluring women, Anne Boleyn was irresistible to kings and commoners alike. Daughter of an ambitious country lord, Anne was sent to France to marry well and raise the family’s fortunes. She soon surpassed even their greatest expectations when King Henry VIII swore he would put aside his loyal queen to make Anne his wife. And so he did, though the divorce would tear apart the English church and inflict religious turmoil and bloodshed on his people for generations to come.

Orlando was earliest known as Jernigan, after Aaron Jernigan, who came from Georgia and settled here in 1842.  The firsr post office was opened in 1850, and the names was changed to Orlano in 1857.  The city is the county seat of Orange County and has 30 lakes within its borders.

The first recorded fire of signifance was in 1858 when the County Court house burned ….it was just a two story wooden cabin like affair but no other buildings were burned as there was nothing close by.  In 1884 there was another fire that burnt four stores and a building holding a local paper’s printing press.  It had to be stopped with explosives.

The CIty installed hydrants on the  water mains and acquired a steam engine pumper in 1908 and by 1915 they had their first motorized fire engine.

In fact, watch “Love in the Time of Cholera” or “The Painted Veil” instead. I apologize for not having seen the former film, but I’ve read the synopsis, and these films seem to share the point I want to get across: More than ever, in the time of contagious illnesses, enjoy the time you have with the people you love. (But if the people you love are sick, maybe stick to FaceTime until they’re better.)
