For Sore Throats:  Not only does lemon contain vitamin C an antioxidants, but also it increases the amount of saliva you produce to keep your mucous membranes moist and soothe your sore throat.  For a particularly scratchy throat, take 1 tbsp of concentrated lemon juice followed imediately by a tablespoon of honey just before bed.  This will usually soothe your throat until morning.

Sketch of Ben Baker’s Key Largo pineapple field as it appeared in an 1871 edition of Harper’s Weekly.

Take a Virtual Vacation to the Florida Keys

Did you know that they grew—-or whether Captain Benjamin Baker, who relocated from Key West to do so, grew pineapples on Key Largo  in 1865 and by 1871 he had gotten the wooded land cleared, planted and harvested enough to have made $7,000 for his efforts.    and by the 1880s the crop was said to have yielded almost 500,000 of the individual fruits.

Wandering why you’ve never see any such farms when you visit….well in 1906 the weather (think hurricane) destroyed most of the crops.   And by 1912 Cuba’s crop which was priced considerably cheaper than Key Largo’s struck the final blow to the Key Largo’s pineapple crops.

110th Anniversary of the Florida Keys hurricane

Or did you know that in the 1820 Marathon went from a proposed settlement (Port Monroe—on what at the time was callled  Key Vaca) by two developers Joshua Appleby and John Fiveash….who basically didn’t suceed at this but there were some Columbian pirateers in th area and  Appleby made a deal to buy the goods they stole and and in turn sold them for a large profit (as a pirateer they had to declare their spoils to the goverment and pay a Tax?—or whatever they called on it so it was a win win for eveyone—except the pirates’ victims from whom the items were stolen and the goverment who collect tarrif from their efforts.
Unlike his devlopment plans this enterprise just continued to gain in participants as well as attract other lllegal activities  It could have went on indefinately, but someone was murdered and that was reported to David Porter, a Naval Commodore—Key West anti pracy force,  who sent the marines to clean up and arrest Appleby and thus ended the enterprise and Port Monroe, leaving just William Bethel and a small fleet of wreckers as the only enterpirse remaining on Key Vaca for the rest of the 1820’s.

And we can’t forget Key West that once was the wealthiest city per capita in the whole US.    While the Key was still Spanish territory it was givn to a Spanish soldier Juan Pablo Salas in 1815,  who sold it 7 years later (1822) to Simonton (whose name still graces a street in town) for $2,000—-and Simonton started a permanent (the island’s first) settlement.   Shortly after that the Navy sent that Commadore we talked about on the Marathan incident to Key West to deal with pirates and the like.  With the loss of the pirates legal salvaging of ships that went down off the nearby reefs became an expremely profitable  business and many came here to make their fortune.  Then Congress passed a law which made it possible or the goods to be auctioned off on the island  in 1824, Key West soon had all manner of houses doing just that and shortly meeting that wealthies city mark—not bad for an island which was orginally named Cayo Hueso—Island of Bones by the early Spanish adventurers.

I love England and all the ancient house, pubs an other interesting places they have and the various thing they were , then went on to become and still exists today and also the ghost that are said to roam amoung their rooms or where the rooms use to be.  Europe and Asia are full of history and the places it was made—-not always great events but inteesting local items which formed things that would some day actually influence great eveents——and how many go back historically to religious institutions.

For instance there’s

Mount Grace Priory

Once Carthusian and one of only 10  Charterhouses
ever built in England.
Founded in 1398 by Richard II’s nephew Thomas de Holand, Earl of Kent and Duke of Surrey, although his personal involvement was prematurely curtaind by the removal of his head for treason against his uncle’s successor:  Henry IV,
just two years later.
Across the ruins of Mt. Grace is a 17th c mansion which is the former priory’s guesthouse (which was extended in 1900).

  • Impressive façade

There are  lesser places like
Sparrows House
Also called the Ancient House
Ipswich
Building has extnsive wood carvings around the front of the house.  4 panels showing Tudor impression of the world:  Africa, and Eruope (this is restored and in fact originally added by Robert Spanove (1660 – 1670.)
In the 14th c it was owned by Knight Sir Richard Martlesham.
In the 16th c belonged to a string of merchants
1603 Sparrone family
Today it has a small art gallery in the the attic.
Queen Victoria Street
London
Just opposite Black Friars Station in, where else, Blackfriars and said to be built on (or near) the site of Blackfriars a Dominican
monastery.  You can still see a fragment of the monastery  wall in Ireland Yard
The pub is wedge shaped and has a medieval air, though it was built in 1875.  It has ecclistial columns, side chapels and frieezes.  as well as Art Nouveau decorations

Cut under directions of a Dr. lsop of Caine, givn by megaphon from the main road.  Again like Uffington and Westbury horses, it lis just below an ancient earthwork, known as Oldbury Castle.  In no way is this horse connected to anything of an earlier date.  The centre of  the eye (4 ft across) was originally filled with upturned bottles to sparle in the sunlight, but these disappeard with time.  The Lansdowne Obelisk was erected in 1845 by Lord Lansdown for his ancestor Sir William Petty.  Best view for the horse is from the A4 Caine to Avebury road, look right at Cherhill.  Easy to see.

How about checking out some Florida Islands!!!

Casey Key / Osprey / Nokomis

As Florida islands go this one is a bit on the slim side–while it’s 8 miles long, it’s only a quarter mile wide—as you can see from the picture above this gives many of the properties with a great view on most sides and even some houses with two beaches aceess  on their property.

Coming under (at least most of it) Florida’s conservative Laws, has kept this island 15 min south of Sarasota and just a bit south of Siesta Key,  with only one road and limited buildings which means it’s mostly rsidental.  The island has gone from fisherman’s dwelling in the early days to lovely upscale homes that start in the lower $2 million price area and range up to the high $5 yes millions.

Longboat Key

Like the majority of these islands this one was a settlemnt for fishermen in the 1880s—–but then this particular island was taken over by a rich and rather famous resident it was changed foreverl

In the late 1920’s the circus came to town as did it’s owner and magnate John Ringling.

Ringling had bridges built by way of St. Armand’s Key

to the mainland

and then he developed St. Armand’s Circle

an upscale shopping area with Galleries, boutique and bistros with well dressed waiters and and world class wine lists.

But the island isn’t just commerical properties there’s also bike paths that run the length of the islands and Parks along those paths with stunning views of the sunset on the ocean side.

And on the bay side are marinas with lots of charter fishing boats for hire and if you want to see more of that Circus guy Sarasota is just a ten minute drive southeast of Longboat—–and there you will find the Ringling Museum including house, gardens, a Circus Museum as well as a beautiful art museum which can take up a good part of a full day and is well worth your time.

Annual events on Longboat include a wine festival with vinters from as far away as France and Sarasota’s French Film Festival many of whom’s participants come to Longboat while their in this area.

Weekend getaway: Hutchinson Island beaches are a blast from the past

Hutchison Island

Let’s finish up the island visits with a trip over to the East Coast of FLorida.  Hutchinson Island is just a little over an hour from Palm Beach International Airport.  Once the home of major Pineapple plantations , today you find high rises in the north.  Here also you’ll find museums, beaches and golf resorts.   While in the south (Martin Co, while the north is in St. Lucie Co) where structures above four stories are forbidden and about half of th 16 mile long beach is undeveloped and where turtle watch is a premier enterprise.  And this area is a breeding ground for logger head, leatherneck and green sea turtles with thousands of eggs being laid on their beaches every year.    Oh and the Locals’ favorite beach is  Bathtube Reef State Park

Ani, Turkey – Haunting Heritage

Church of the Holy Redeemer, Ani, Turkey:  In 961 C, th Bagratid Dynasty declared Ani the capital of their new Christian Armenian Kingdom.  Some 70 years later Prince Abigharib Pahlavid completed the Church of the Holy Redeemer, or Surp Amenapir Kitch, to house supposed splinters of the True Cross.  Abandoned in the 18th c, the church now is on Turkey’s border with modern Armenia.  A storm in 1955 and an earthquake in 1988 nearly destroyed the edifice
