VARIOUS TIPS TO KEEP IT GREEN AND ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY

It’s still summer–here in Florida that means hot hot hot and rain rain rain.  But with summer comes #lawncare which is a pet peeve of mine.  I am appalled at the amount of time and money spent on something that is basicly useless and the chemicals employed OMG.  So I decided to offer some time saving, cheap and environment-safe methods to maintain that space.

You can #aerate your lawn regularly by wearing golf spikes when you mow it.

And don’t mow it too short.  Blade of grass are the turf’s leaves, converting sunlight into food; if you lave them a little long, you’ll significantly reduce the need for fertilizer. (Practical Problem Solvers/Reader’s Digest)

PLANT BETTER GRASS:                                                                   Ecolawn: This blend of fine fescue grasses is highly drought-tolerant and requires less fertilization than traditional grass. It can be grown anywhere in the United States. (Learn more: Wildflower Farm)               Buffalograss: As the native grass of the Western Plains, this variety thrives in drier areas of the country such as California and Nevada. It only needs to be mowed once a month. (Learn More: Todd Valley Farms | High Country Gardens)                                                                    Seshore paspalum: This is an eco-friendly grass for Southern states with warm climates. It doesn’t even like fertilizer, and it tolerates recycled water, or even salty water. (Learn more: Phillip Jennings Turf Farms)  http://www.marthastewart.com/267940/eco-friendly-lawn-care-101

For parts of the yard that is usually only seen and not used, consider planting ground covers (ie: Ajuga, English ivy, euonymus, pachysandra, thyme or vinca) Not only are they ornamental but they also don’t need regular mowing.

  • Get rid of destructive #moles and #gophers:  Mole hills and tunnels make a mess of your lawn, and gophers can destroy your landscape as they gnaw on roots, eat flowers and bulbs, and chew on shrubs. Try garic stakes:  Because these invasive tunnelers rely on a strong sense of smell to find food, the Gopher and Mole Repellent will discourage them from taking up residence in your yard. This totally organic gopher & mole control is made of garlic oil and other natural extracts, to be really offensive to those pests! The mole repeller is biodegradable, and won’t harm humans, pets, birds or plants.  These are great have used them myself and they work on vampires too.   http://www.improvementscatalog.com/gopher-and-mole-repellent-set-of-12/10287?redirect=y

IT’S A MOUNTAIN! IT’S A HILL! NO IT’S A TOWN

Florida Fact:  In November 1984 a storm deposited a 230-foot Venezuelan #tankerMercedes behind the sea wall at Molly Wilmot’s Palm #beachfront home–it was stuck there for 103 days. (FLORIDA FUNFACTS/Kleinberg)

I decided to write on one of my favorite Central Florida towns:  #MTDORA .  It’s been called “Everyone’s Home Town”, “The Rose Capital”,  “The Antique Center”, and “one of the Safest (towns) to live”.  (THE FLORIDA ONE-DAY TRIP BOOK/Hayes)

“This town…was named for a nearby Lake, which a surveying team had named after a local woman Dora Ann Drawdy, who had shown them kindness and hospitality”  (THE BOOK LOVERS GUIDE TO FLORIDA/Editor:  McCarthy)

It is also the setting for the classic post-apocalyptic novel, #Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank, under the fictitious name of Fort Repose. and The buildings in downtown Mount Dora were painted pink for the feature film, #Honky Tonk Freeway.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Dora,_Florida

Its been described as a typical New England town (“except for he palm trees and Spanish moss” –THE BEST SMALL TOWNS UNDER THE SUN/Howard) and it is with its lake side situation and it’s lovely old homes and interesting down town (which is currently undergoing a face lift.) that and much more.

MURDER OR ACCIDENT?

I LOVE  BOOKS, all kinds and I was thumbing through one the other day (READER’S DIGEST UNSOLVED CRIMES/Wright).  When I came across a half page on #KarenSilkwood.silkwoodcar600.jpg (600×443) The name rang a bell, but I had to read further to reboot the memory.  Silkwood it seems “worked at a plutonium plant near Oklahoma City and was a union activist who had complained about unsafe conditions.” “For three days in November, she was found to have abnormal but low levels of #plutonium contamination on her person and in her home. That month, while driving to meet with David Burnham, a New York Times journalist, and Steve Wodka, an official of her union’s national office,  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Silkwood

” … Silkwood attended a local union meeting then got into her car to drive to Oklahoma City to deliver the manila folder of evidence, the results of her seven week vigil,..Ten minutes later her car went off the road and Silkwood died. The state patrol ruled it an accident, saying “it’s pretty clear she fell asleep at the wheel…”blood tests showed a small amount of alcohol and methaqualone (a prescription sedative) (which was not felt to be enough to cause her to fall asleep in the 10 min she was driving)… A subsequent investigation by a private detective concluded that she had likely been forced off the road by another car; a dent in the rear bumper showed metal and rubber fragments, as if another car had rammed her from behind. The manila folder was not recovered from the site of the crash, though other personal effects were.  http://www.biography.com/people/karen-silkwood-9542402#synopsis

Since her death:

In 1976, two years after Silkwood died but officially unrelated to the Silkwood scandal, the Cimarron plant was shut down by Kerr-McGee.

1984, a motion picture, “Silkwood,” was made about her life.

1986, her family sued Kerr-McGee for $11.5 Million for her contamination,(bio by: Kit and Morgan Benson)  http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=2485

Kohn, Howard.’ Who Killed Karen Silkwood?

Hannam, Joyce. The Death of Karen Silkwood.

Documentaries:

The truth of what happened the night of November 13, 1974, may never be known. What is clear is that the death of Silkwood has become a rallying point for anti-nuclear activists and put the nuclear industry on the defensive. The Atomic Energy Commission confirmed three violations at the Cimarron plant… http://www.biography.com/people/karen-silkwood-9542402#mysterious-death

A PRESIDENTIAL BEAR THAT IS STILL WITH US TODAY

According to Kovels (Feb 2013) the #TEDDYBEAR  was born in 1902 when #Teddyroosevelt was hunting in Mississippi and refused to shoot a bear that had been rendered helpless by his attendants.

washington_post_1902.jpg (450×631)

And the rest is  #bearhistory:

The teddy bear is a soft toy in the form of a bear. Developed apparently simultaneously by toy makers Morris Michtom in the US (Michtom later found the #IDEALTOYCO) and Richard Steiff in Germany in the early years of the 20th century, and named after President Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., the teddy bear became an iconic children’s toy, celebrated in story, song and film. Since the creation of the first teddy bears which sought to imitate the form of real bear cubs, “teddies” have greatly varied in form, style and material. They have become collector’s items, with older and rarer “teddies” appearing at public auctions. Teddy bears are among the most popular gifts for children and are often given to adults to signify love, congratulations or sympathy.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teddy_bear

The German #Steiff “teddies” seem to be the most famous.  The Steiff company has been making plush animals since 1880.

The original teddy bears were made (on both sides of the Atlantic) with mohair fabric “fur” that was commonly used for upholstery, black leather shoe-button eyes, and excelsior packing as stuffing. In the 1920s, glass eyes were used, but both the glass and button eyes pulled off easily. In 1948, Wendy Boston patented a screw-in eye made of molded nylon. These were supplanted in the 1950s by plastic eyes mounted on stems and fastened securely to the inside of the fabric with grommets or washers. These safety eyes became standard by the 1960s.  (Steiff bears can be identified by the trademark metal button stuck in their left ear).  http://EzineArticles.com/3913107

In 1907, music history was made when music of the famous song, The Teddy Bear’s Picnic, was penned by American composer J.K. Bratton. The song was originally called The Teddy Bear Two Step and the lyrics we know and love today were not actually added until 1932 by prolific British songwriter Jimmy Kennedy.  http://ezinearticles.com/?33-Top-Teddy-Bear-Facts-You-Probably-Never-Knew!&id=3913107

LOVE, GOOD HEALTH AND PROSPERITY

While looking at a #catalog the other day I saw some #FengShui #Charms of #jade that are suppose  to bring you #luck.

So that got me to thinking about  NO NOT our concept of luck and life but the popular use of #crystals and #stones to change our lives.

FOR instance #JADE:  Jade is most valued for its metaphysical properties. It is the ultimate “Dream Stone,” revered in ancient cultures, as well as today, to access the spiritual world, gain insight into ritualistic knowledge, encourage creativity, and dream-solve.  It is cherished as a protective talisman, assuring long life and a peaceful death, and is considered a powerful healing stone.  An amulet of good luck and friendship, Jade signifies wisdom gathered in tranquility, dispelling the negative and encouraging one to see oneself as they really are.  http://www.crystalvaults.com/crystal-encyclopedia/jade

Wow that’s a lot of significance for a little rock.

Although that jade is found in Central America, Brazil, Burma, India and Canada no other culture able to rival China’s vast amount of jade art and jewelry. The usage of jade in Chinese culture and History dates back to almost nine thousand years ago. http://anthropology.msu.edu/anp363-ss13/2013/03/30/a-brief-history-on-jade/

Jade is a beautiful, milky-green gemstone….(that)is an extremely hard and brittle stone that takes great skill to craft it into pieces of art to be worn and adorned. http://china.answers.com/environment/ancient-chinese-jade-and-the-stone-of-heaven

Crystal healing is a pseudoscientific alternative medicine technique that employs stones and crystals.  Adherents of the technique claim that these have healing powers, although there is no scientific basis for this claim.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_healing

So does it bring luck….I think that’s more an effort on our part.  Using good judgement (thinking in the age of technology is becoming highly under rated), avoiding people (i.e. romantically and other wise) that use and abuse us, as well as hard work, positive attitude and self confidence.   It doesn’t hurt to have a good luck charm but it can not replace your efforts.

This book goes along with the remembrances of WWI which have been going on lately–while not factual it is still period appropriate.   It is part of the series with Detective Isaac Bell (http://www.clive-cussler-books.com/html/IsaacBell_DetectiveSeries.htm)  by Clive Cussler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Cussler#NUMA).  It starts with an apparent Suicide of an American battleship-designer, but then there are the accidental deaths and dare I say it murders…in turn of the century NYC the plot thickens and as always with Cussler is a roller coaster from start to end…read it for a great adventure.

A month or so ago I reviewed Alaffia a company that claims that it is helping in Africa.  At that time I left the opinion open.  The latest ad states that they launched  in 2004 Maternal Health Project and have provided full maternal health care for thousands of women.

The first claim (which I have no problem believing) is that approximatey 162,000 women and one million infants die each year in West Africa due to lack of basic maternal care.

Sub-Saharan Africa remains the worst place in the world to be a mother or child, with Scandinavian nations again taking the top spots in the rankings by the Connecticut-based humanitarian group. (http://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/parenting/05/08/mothers.index/index.html?eref=yahoo)

Maternal mortality is unacceptably high. About 800 women die from pregnancy- or childbirth-related complications around the world every day. In 2013, 289 000 women died during and following pregnancy and childbirth. Almost all of these deaths occurred in low-resource settings, and most could have been prevented.  (http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs348/en/)

OK no debate on the high death rates how about their project:  Alaffia is working for change. The company operates maternal health clinics in the Central and Kara regions of Togo. Expectant mothers have their prenatal consultations and delivery paid for by Alaffia.  Currently, 1,000 women a year receive maternal care through Alaffia.  (http://www.thurstontalk.com/2014/03/21/olympia-based-alaffia-helps-mothers-africa/)

THE MANY FACES OF CELERY CITY

Sanford is my presentation Florida City of the week. Lately Sanford has received a bad rap with a tragic, unfortunate incident that as a long-time visitor to the city, I do not feel is any indicator of its true nature.  I feel it’s worth a look this week:

Sanford is  a lovely older city that has some great shops and some noteworthy restaurants (http://www.sanforddowntown.org/).  Founded by Henry Sanford in the late 1880’s near Ft. Melon which was named after a commander killed in 1830s.  The fort located on Lake Monroe (part of St. Johns River’s chain of lakes) was supplied by riverboat traffic and thus was a point of interest to settlers coming to settle the wilderness which at that time  was the interior of Florida.  (Best Backroads of FLorida/Waitley)
By the first decade of the 20th century Sanford had became a center of vegetable growing and shipping (one of the largest in US) and earned a nickname Celery City.

In 1913 (due to a less than honest ex-and future mayor who was a state senator) Seminole Co. was formed and Sanford became the county seat.  (Guide to Florida Historical Walking Tours/Sandler)

Today Sanford (about 28 miles north of Orlando) is a quiet waterfront community with multiple marinas and even a Paddle Wheeler with trips up the St. John’s.  (http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2012-10-10/business/os-sanford-new-riverboat-cruise-20121010_1_dinner-cruises-sanford-monroe-harbour-marina)

The older sections of town has lovely homes, (the area was featured in My Girl —  http://www.movie-locations.com/movies/m/mygirl.html#.U-OIFPk7uQo)  with tree-lines streets and quaint parks.

It’s  Airport has been growing and is attempting to offer an alternative to Orlando’s larger venue ( http://www.orlandosanfordairport.com/).

AGGRESSIVE DOG?  Always a potential danger.  But if misbehavior is nonthreatening (i.e. around a new baby or the mailman for instance) you can try behavior modification by showering it with attention and treats when the disliked person is present, the dog will hopefully begin to enjoy the person’s presence.  Reader’s Digest PRACTICAL PROBLEM SOLVER

PREPARING TO PACK:  Gather all the garments you anticipate needing. Then put half of them back. Select clothes in the same color family, packing more tops than bottoms. For a five-day trip, you’ll likely need five shirts, two pairs of slacks or jeans, and one skirt, (  Amecher/The Woman Road Warrior). Seasonal allergies (allergic rhinitis). Some research shows that people who take a milk thistle extract in combination with a conventional antihistamine have reduced symptoms

Heartburn (dyspepsia), when a combination of milk thistle and several other herbs is used.

Very few bad side effects from the use of milk thistle … have been reported when taken as recommended… have found that taking … may rarely have a laxative effect or cause nausea, heartburn, or stomach upset. At high doses, mild allergic reactions have been seen (more than 1,500 milligrams a day).http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/cam/milkthistle/Patient/page1/AllPages/Print

So that gives you some idea of this popular herbal.  This is not a recommendation –just a review :  If you have a health problem of any kind you should first consult a qualified professional and get a complete work-up to be sure you know what is actually the cause of your symptoms and the proper recommendation for treatment drugs, diet, etc.

Barbary Coast is an American television series that aired on ABC. The pilot movie first aired on May 4, 1975 and the series itself premiered September 8, 1975; the last episode aired January 9, 1976 and starred William Shatner, his first series attempt since that little show Star Trek that made him a household name.  I personally remember the last but not this Western.

Made me wonder what other weirdness is lurking out there in DVD land.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbary_Coast_(TV_series)

First one I found was a hot star in  The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Next Generation a 1994 film with on his way to stardom Matthew McConaughey as a psychopath with a robotic leg and Renee Zellweger who provides the flights and screams of terror.

AMC’S TOP FIVE TOP STARS GONE WRONG:

John Travolta in Battlefield Earth (2000)  He can’t quite hide behind the heavy makeup he wore to play an alien in this adaptation of a book by Scientology’s founder.

2. Halle Berry in Catwoman (2004)
A horrible movie with a horrible costume that bombed horribly at the box office.
3.  Jon Voight in SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2 (2004)
playing a villain whose plans for world conquest are thwarted by genius babies.
4.  Ben Kinsgley in The Love Guru (2008)
… the man who played Ghandi can be seen as a guru teaching Mike Myers how to unlock his chastity belt.
5.  Robert De Niro in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000)  attempting to defeat an animated moose & squirrel is simply, unfortunately  unforgiveable.

“While casting the … film in 1972, Paramount reportedly thought the project was a risky…wanted an established star to play the lead.  (they first offered the role to Jack Nicholson who declined) Apart from Nicholson, Warren Beatty, Robert Redford, Ryan O’Neal, and Dustin Hoffman …each declined. The part went to Al Pacino, and became one of the best performances in movie history. “ http://stylecaster.com/actors-who-turned-down-roles/#ixzz39QxaYbT5
