“Ostara, also known as Eostre, was a pagan goddess of fertility.  Easter the Christian festival, which lies near the spring equinox, derives its name and its symbols from her.  The Easter egg, for example was originally Ostara’s emblem, a sign of her wholeness and unfailing fertility.  Such was the power of her fertility that estrogen, the hormone that prompts egg production in women, is named after her.  Ostera’s arrival was marked by the blossoming of yellow flowers such as primross and daffodils and by the fresh green leaves.”

The Big Easy Poster 1

The Big Easy (1986) on Netflix

R
A film that captures the steamy, colorful essence of New Orleans, this crime thriller tells the romantic story of a classy detective whose investigation of a gangland murder lands him in trouble with the city’s new District Attorney, a woman with a rigid penchant for following the letter of the law. Despite their differences, the two manage to work together and eventually fall in love. Unfortunately all of this leads them to have to fight for their lives when their investigation into the case and the corruption surrounding it gets them bumped up to the top of a hit man’s list. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
I love this story and  Dennis Quade does such a job as the Hot,  sexy Cajun Police Detective  Remy McSwain—that smile and when he meets Anne Osburn—Elen Barkin a woman much better at investigation than she is with matters of the heart or even the body—-that is until Remy changes her luck…the luck scene—WOW…..you don’t have to have nudity to make the screen heat up and these two prove it to a top degree—and the drama and the police corruption and the investigation and the question of loyality and legalities in the Big Easy– city of New Orleans is all put together to keep one or all of your emotions and involvement on track.

Grave of a sailor who died on the USS Maine at Key West Cemetery.

Key West’s Cemetery

Dating from 1847 the cemetery is located in the center of Old Town.  The streets about it are Angela, Margaret, Passover Lane, Francis and Olivia.  Orginally on another part of the island  it was moved to what would pass for higher ground only in Key West—but it is the highest point on island.  The reports of the previous cemetery which was at the Southern Most Point sayes that the 1847 hurricane destroyed the whole of the place—ripping out tomb stones and scattering bodies about the island some even lodged in trees.

View of Key West Cemetery.

The current area is full of the bizzare and the subline from a memorial and final resting place for sailors killed with the destruction of the Maine, to a plot where it is said the family spent an entire fortune burying family members and assorted pets–including a deer.

Huge British Royal Coat of Arms Wall Plaque For Sale

The British Aristocarcy over 900 years from feudal obligations of noblemen to  the  Normans

Kings, who conferred priveges of rank and property in return for armed support.   Subsequent monarchs bestowed titles and property on their supporters, establishing new aristorcratic dynasties.  The title of “earl” dates from the 11th c, that of “duke” from the 14th c.   Soon the nobility began to choose their own symbols, partly to identify a knight concealed by his armor:  Thee were often painted on the kinghts armour (hence the term “coat of arms”)

The Brits do Royalty so well…..it’s a source of entertainment and fun for the rest of us….better than a TV show.  Don’t get me wrong I love Britain and respect the country more than any other—they have been so much and yet keep going.

Show Boat

Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s immortal musical adaptation of Edna Ferber’s sprawling novel receives its most faithful and enduring cinematic treatment under the elegant direction of James Whale. A rich portrait of changing American entertainment traditions and race relations, Show Boat spans five decades and three generations as it follows the fortunes of the stagestruck Magnolia (Irene Dunne), an aspiring actor whose journey takes her from her family’s humble floating playhouse in the 1880s South to the bright footlights of the 1930s North. The cast of show-business legends includes Helen Morgan, Hattie McDaniel, Charles Winninger, and the great Paul Robeson, whose iconic, soul-shaking rendition of “Ol’ Man River” is one of the crowning glories of the American stage and screen.

Basil Rathbone is my bar none favorite Sherlock Holmes a detective that has fascinated me for long years and yest I know it’s in Black and white—but it really is great with the atmospheric for the dark moors and scenes featuring lurking deadly hound and the fogs and mystic—you can watch it free at sight noted above and if you watch it with an open mind you will see that not everything needs color to be great.

The first Basil Rathbone Holmes was made in 1939 with 20th century Fox and then eventually went to Universal—Rathbone made several more films thru 1947 when he left the series.  Rathbone was often the villian playing the Sheriff of Nottingham in Errol Flynn’s Robin Hood and as RIchard III in the Tower of London movie.—so though I might watch and like other Holmes productions he’ll always have my heart for his Sherlock.

Courtly Love

You’ve read about it saw it in movies and we all have our concepts about it—at least those older ones of us—there maybe some of you out there that have no concept of what it might be—so lets loo

“Against the idea of spiritual chivalry  was set that of Amour Courtoise or                                                                                    Courtly Love, which successfully mimicked Chivalry.  Knights were instucted to devote themselves solely and utterly to a single lady, irrespective of whether she was already married or returned  their amrous desires (DOES  THAT SEEM A BIT CREEPY TO ANYONE BUT ME)  Echoing actual rocceedings,, several ‘Courts of Love’ were set up, in which intellectual noblewomen like Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of … Henry II who promoted the ‘the discovery of Arthur’s grave at Glastonbury’, and her daughter Marie de Champagne, for whom Chretien wrote his elaborate tales of love, held rials in which the action of lovers of both sexes were judged and punishment meted out according to an elaborate set of rules.  These were formalized in a textbook written by Marie’s chaplain   Andreas in 1174.  The Art of Courtly Love detailed the proper way of approaching or addressing the lady or gentleman of one’s choice and the intricate  observances of class, wherby a noblewoman might spak to a man of th middle classes, or a person of higher station addresss one of a lower order.  This in turn both influened Chretien in the composition of his Arthrian romances and causd a revolution in the chivalric code behavior throughout the courts of Europe.  At its worst Courtly Love became an excuse for adultery; at its best it furthered a new respect, almost amounting to idolatry for women–hitherto little more than chattels

Exeter, Devon: ‘It’s getting an air of confidence.’

Exeter

The historic capital of Devon, a university city, a cathedral city, with museums and theatre.  Exeter epitomiss Devon in that its true charm is only revealed when you leave your car.  The centre of the city, like so many in Europe, suffered greatly during the war, but bhind the modern HIgh Street and she shopping precincts lies the glorious cathedral set in what is almost a village green overlooked by a delightful miscellany of buildings ranging from the medieval with their charming cobbled courtyards through to Vicorian.  The cathedral is one of Englands’s grea architectural masterieces, but equally rewarding in a different way is the Maritime Museum down on the Quay where over a hundred ships and boats from all parts of the wold have been restored and preserved.

OK back to our wanderings thru Florrida

We drove thru town and past International Drive and the theme parks and we continue Southwest on I-4

US 27 passes thru this area and by-passes the small towns that set on Florida’s back bone , this was built in 1956…but there is another road that moves down this same route, the original road known as ALT. US27 and further south Co Rd 17 and they are what is known as the Scenic Highweay which dates to a time when hwys had names not number in the 1920’s.

We’ll exit I-4 on US 27 south.—this area has an interesting history of unsucessul development at least for tourism.

Two years after Disney’s Florida Project started taking its first guests (1973), a large circus tent appeared at the corner of Interstate 4 and Highway 27 (just south west of the Magic Kingdom) in Haines City FL.)   This oversized tent-shaped building was a preview center for Circus World.

Along with Sea World and Cypress Gardens, publishing company Harcourt Brace Jovanovich purchased the park in 1986.  The new owners promptly closed the park after determining that a new theme for the site was needed.  The circus themed attraction had never really managed to attract large crowds.  Their new park, Boardwalk Walk and Baseball would open a year later,

Boardwalk and Baseball was the new theme park built near Haines City, Florida, . It opened in April 1987,   Base Ball CIty Statium was built in 1988.  and it all closed January 17, 1990.

The land was sold to developer Victor Posner in 2001. The ballpark was torn down in 2005 to make way for the new Posner Park; a retail complex with several big box stores opened on the site in 2008 and is still actively (or was before the virus)  open and selling

One of the things I have enjoyed is the old horror movies—-without the butchery of modern genre, and thus forced in many cases to actually develop plots and story lines—-something often missed when blood and hacking bodies passed for them.  But I also enjoy the silliness of thos days for example:

“The spread of popular vampire humor  awaited the creation of the widely recognized stereotypical cinematic vampire by Bela Lugosi

in the 1930s .

The first major attempt to exploit the humorous possibilities of Lugosi’s Dracula

occurred in the 1948 Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstien.

The plot of the movie revolved around Dracula’s

attempt to steal comedian Lou Costellos’ brain and place it in the head of the

Frankenstien’s Monster

Lugosi returned to his Dracula role for the spoof, which iin retrospect received high marks as one of Abbott and Costello’s best movies.  It was said to be far superior to Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll adn Mr. Hyde (1953), in which an unamed acor mad a cameo appearance as Dracula”

On the year we drove we spent some time in Devon and with the help of a lady who owned a hotel we stayed at were (with her driing) able to see some lesser known areas of the area—Drake figured promidently in the area’s history.
“The Godfathr of the nautical mafia, of course, Sir Francis Drake.
who was probably the most able sea commandr in history.  He became a legendary figure to Devonians and was eected Mayor of Plymouth, and is credited with bringing fresh water to the city for the first time via a systm of pipes and canals leading from Dartmoor.    Drake forged the basis of his reputation in 1579 when he became the first Englishman to sail round the world.   As with so many of these Elizabethan comman ders his motives do not sem to have been exploration and discovery, but pursuit of gold, preferably Spanish gold, but anyon else’s would do at a pinch.”

Mount Dora Florida—A place by any other name ?

Mount Dora is named for the lake it borders, everyone I have spoken to is sure of that, but after that things get a little vague.  Well we do know that the Mount came from the quick ascent of the land from the lake sure to heights of amazing amount of feet—at least for predominately flat  and often covered with water because its so low, land in Florida.   We know that the lake was name in about 1846 – 1848 when surveyors we mapping the state out.

Florida had been settled by Spain and even after the English arrived with a long line of coastal colonies Spain held Florida-–when England captured Havanna Cuba she used that to broker a trade for Florida and as part of a treaty in 1763.  When the  British left after loosing the war they returned Florida to Spain in 1783.  In 1819 the US acquired Florida from Spain and Florida became a state in 1845.  Then came the survey of the pennisula.

It is accepted that the surveyors named the lake—but there it gets foggy.  For year I and most everyone else had been told that the Dora for which the land was named was Dora Ann Drawdy who along with her huband James came here in 1846 from Irwin Co. Georga and established a farm.  Then in 1848 those surveyrs came to the area and due to her kindness to them (in the manner of some food and water) they named the lake Dora after her.  Eventually she and her family move to Seneca 10 miles north of the original farm, after her  husband joined the Confederate Army and was killed.  She never returned to the area.

But more recently this has been investigated and the history has been revised, seems that Dora had 2 husband, her first James she married and became a widow with three chidren all in Georgia.  She later married William Draway, a cousin, after his death and they moved to Florida in 1850 or somewhere there after.  William joined the Confederate Army (infantry) and died in 1862.  While the lake was named by the surveyors at least 2 years before she and her faimly arrived here.

So since it’s too late to ask the surveyors I guess we’ll never know who or what it was named after—But Ms Drawdy has a street-more like an alley named after her.

Downtown Mount Dora features more than 20 restaurants within a three-block area, along with plentiful shopping.

The Knight Templar - medieval tapestry
One of the most talked about but really little known (at least there’s is the Templers—so many interpertations—there’s even a TV show that tells of their secrets—or whether what the king of France claimed they did—and which he used to break them up and take their aquired wealth-which to me at least makes the claims rather susepect at least to me–But weath does seem to be one thing the old church was able to do the best was accumulate money…..but that’s a whole other story….as for the Templers:
The Knight Templars  came into eistence towards the end of the second decade of the twelfth century in response to the exigencies of pilgrims in the recently consituted Latin Kingdom of Jeresulem.  Their foundation was eventually to lead to the forging of a new ideology which, in the words of John Prawer, “fused two current ideals of medieva society, knighthood and monasticism, into a code for a community of warrior monks.”   But their original function–the protection of pilgrims on the dangerous road from the port of Jaffa up to Jerusalem--was both less ambitious and much more urgent.

The picturesque village of Exford, set perfectly to explore Exmoor National Park #traveldestinations #thebestofexmoor

Many visitors to the UK see London, York, Liverpool and the like and miss the wonder of their towns and villages some with little changes for hundreds of years—i love to take backroad tours—and then there was the couple  of weeks I drove about Cornwall, Devon and Wales to name a few which allowed us to see so much—and then my girfriend did similar driving duties after we took a ferry across to Wexford in Ireand—it was a wonderful if at some times crazy adventure.

Exford

A center for stag hunting since Norman Times.

This English village is 10 mies south of Porlock in a sheltered valley of the River Exe., with pasture enclosurers above open moorland in what at one time was a Royal Forest, which are now used as sheep walks.

The Center of the village green is used as a football pitch.  The village is made up of small Georgian and Victorian Cottages around the green forms a pleasing area.

408 William Street, Key West, was brought to Key West from Green Turtle Cay in 1847–by Captain RIchard Roberts

One of my favorite things to do in Key West is walk through the neighborhoods and viewing the lovely old homes—-or you can take one of the tours that takes you about —-which ever this is just one example of the houses they have to offer for your viewing

“When a US law specified that salvaged cargo from shipwrecks in American water be brought to the narst domestic port, the wrecking industry in Key West as given a boost.  Many wreckers from the Bahamas relocated to the island.  They brought their own architectural style with them.  The traditional Bahamian house was well suited to a tropical climate and such devices as window louvers and roof hatches for ventilation became part of the Key West architectural vocabulary.  The houses were built on limestone pier foundations so the cool air could circulate underneath the floor boards.  Down spouts and gutters were used to collect rain water in cisterns.  WIde porches and secnd-story balconies were built to provide additional liing space during especailly hot weather.

The two graves of Daniel Boone

You all know about the great Frontier hero Daniel Boon–born in a log cabin in Reading, Pa (11/2/1734) who by 1751 was making a living in North Carolina  as a hunter and trapper and you know the rest of his history.  But for today we’re more interested in the later part of his history—seemes that he lost his land twice  (once in Kentucy and then again in Missouri both when the areas becae states and in his old age and a widower he spent his final years at his son’s Missouri home-–he passed away at age 85 and was buried in Marthasville, Miss. at the foot of his wife’s grave as the spot next to her grave was aready occupied.  So that’s that right?

Daniel Boone's grave in Frankfort. Uh-huh.

Seems that in 1845 a group from Kentucky put up a monument to Daniel in the capita city’s cemeery and had Daniel and his wife Rebecca reinterred in Frankfort, Kentucky.

I also found this one pictured for Marthasville

But according to the accounts (though the exact details vary from what you’re reading) the grave diggers messed up and got Rebecca’s body but not Daniels—maybe because he was buried at her feet and not beside her?—

In 1983 a forensic anthropologist studied a plaster cast of the sku and stated it was “a large black man.”  But the people in Frankfort questioned his findings, credentials etc.

The Chase (1966)
Fun fact about it: Jane Fonda and Robert Redford enjoyed working with each other. They had a lot in common and Redford’s humor helped Fonda relax on set.

Barefoot in the Park (1967)
Fun fact about it: Robert Redford starred in both the Broadway play and this film version. His leading lady on Broadway was Elizabeth Ashley.

The Electric Horseman (1979)
Fun fact about it: One of seven pictures director Sydney Pollack and actor Robert Redford both collaborated on.

I know I promised that I’d be back on Thurs to tell you more about Cenral Florifa that you just might not know, but I had to go to the doctor and while all my tests are already back and normal it still put me a day behind schedule BUT here it is.
Orange Co has what some say is population overloads—namely Orlando and Lake Buena Vista  (the later is actualy a town owned by Disney)  This area south of time that holds Disney with Universal closer to town and lots more as well.  Since Disney arrived in 1971 this area has just never been the same and is a area of emplyment for many, though the locals don’t do the parks as much as you might think,
Originally seetled in the 1940s by Army volunteers who came here to fight the Seminole Wars and decided to stay.
Seminole Wars, (1817–18, 1835–42, 1855–58), three conflicts between the United States and the Seminole Indians of Florida in the period before the American Civil War, that ultimately resulted in the opening of the Seminole’s desirable land for white exploitation and settlement.
by 1870 if you could imagion the town was more like Tombstone than the coastal towns of Florida—there were gunfights in the street—cattle rustlers and posses chasing the big guys.  Beginning in the 1890’s  plantation owners from the post Civil War South started coming to Florida enticed by the climate , water reserves and relatively inexpensive land.  They bough huge tracts of land and went into citrus production and with their activities they pulled Orlando out of lawlessness to a livable and civilized town.

When Disney first opened the average visitor disposed trash was 1-1 1/2 pounds each—in 1989 the number of trash produced daily was 90 tons—I don’t even want to know what it is today.

Oh and I love this on Disney’s opening day in 1971—one monorail pilot was grounded because her black panties were visible thru her green jump suit.

It is said that Disney bought most of the land for Disney World for an average of $180/acre.  As news finally started leaking acres went for reportedly as high as $80,000 per acre.  It is said that Disney’s first choice was St. Louis—but I find that hard to phantom given the down time he would have had with Mo. winters.

And there’s the Town of Celebration in the area—which had its first robbery in 8/19/98 —so what you say—well considering that was 2 years after it was found speaks a lot for the town.

OK we’ve finished the theme parks.   I you traveled on I-4 thru orlando you’d pass those parks and lots of other tourist areas….well we’ve done that and Sunday (running a day late will catch up for Tues next week) we will continue on I-4 to US 27 and get into the back bone of Florida—see you then.

Florida Cowboys

Ok now to the cowboys and yes my dears Florida Had and Has cowboys.  The history of the cowboys start in the late 1800s (probaly around the 1870’s when Kissimmee  birthed the first cattlemen.  They called them farms but the cattle were known to roam where they wished to go.  But these were no open plains and bore all manner of vegetations that could get in the way of the traditional lariats—so was birthed the use of the bullwhip to herd their often unwilling charges where they wished.

Cattle were big business in the  1870’s and 80s just like out west.  But to be perfectly honest this area wasn’t the first to herd cattle here—the Spanish grazed their herds to supply St. Augustine’s demands on an area close to what is now Micanopy and when they left the Indians and the British both had large herds in the area., followed closely by the Americans when Florida finally became US territory.  Florida supplied the Confederacy with beef until the area was contained leaving thousands of cattle roaming the lands very close to being wild animals.

The Florida Cracker Cowboy wasn’t much diferent (other than the whip thing) than the Western version.  There were round ups, rustlers, cattle drives and all manner of craziness that have become legendary for that particular occupation.  Florida’s drovers dessed more sinply and thogh they had rodeos and all they never really became part of the legends of our times.

The one exception being Bone Mizell,

believed by many to be the model for Remington’s Painting (see below)

did become part of Florida’s lore.  He  according to legend could outride anybody and was also known as a clown and a major boozer.  And then there was lighting his pipe with dollar bills and branding cattle with his teetch.  He was a head cowhand for Zlibe King.

Zibe not to be outdonee was siad to be

6’6″ and 225 lbs and was noted for his eating competition victories and stud poker abilities and one time when Manatee Co couldn’t pay its schoolteachers, Zibe personally provided enough gold to pay their salaries for six month—or so I’m told.

But I might note that sites I read stated that Spanish doubloons were more common here than American money in the 19th cenury as the Cubans and many of the local residents distrusted the paper money the goverment put out.  It is rumored that ranchers often kept as much as $10,000 in gold in gourd safeboxes in their homes

Celtic folklore of caves often tells that they contain beings from bygone times.  For instance the Irish cave faries

ar said to be descended from the second race that settled Ireland

the Tuatha da Danaan

After their defeat by the Milesians

the Tuatha da Danaan went underground into the caves, especially by the coast.  Thsi reflects the legend of heroes who did not die, but disappeared into the earth to lead a subterranean existence with their ancestors.

Jamaica Inn (1983): A Delightful Bag of Gothic Goodies
It seems that Ms du Maurier  got her inspiration while riding horses on the moor with a friend thru the “dark, diabolical beauty” of Bodmin Moor.

they becam lost in the mist and rain and it was near midnight when they stumbled on Jamaican Inn

It has been there since 1750 and was a coaching inn—a place for the weary traveler could spend the night after using the turnpike crossing the wild and treacherous moor.

and some of the guest used the inn to hide contraband that had been smugged aboard—in fact the estimate was that half the brandy and a quarter of all tea being smuggled into the UK was landed along the Cornish and Devon coasts.  And the inn’s remoteness—though there is a major highway a bit of a distance away the Inn itself when I was there in the early 2000’s was still set apart and lonely—I know I was driving on that vacation and the traffic by the inn was non-existant a relief for the wrong side of the road I drove—anyway that made it an excellent stopping place on the way to Devon and onward.–rumor has it that the name comes from the Inn’s trade in rum.

and of course there are reports of ghosts there and it has been included on ghost tours and there was at least one muder there as well, and reports of the clatter of horses hooves on cobbbled stones—-in the day of rubber and gas vehicles.    Been there —–you should try it some time

Avebury Stone Circle
Wiltshire 1 mile N of A4 midway between Marborough  and Calne
Avebury is according to Sir John Betjeman the place where the story of English architecture begins.  The 17th diarist and antiquarian John Aubrey wrote that Avebury was a cathedral in comparison with the ‘parish church’ of Stonehenge:  certainly the earthworks and arrays of standng stones at Avebury are more extensive, though they have never attracted the same amount of public interest.  Perhaps this is because the circle at Avebury lacks the evidence, so impressive at Stonehenge. of man’s first big advance in building technique—the laying of a horizontal slab on top of two verticals.  This comparative sophistcation apart, the biggest difference between the two sites today is that the 28-acre circle at Avebur has the greater part of the village actualliy inside it, and a busy road running right through the middle.  While Stonehenge, bleak on Salisbury Plain, has lost some its majesty with its popularity as a tourist attraction.  Avebury with a small but permanent population, remains impressive, unaffected and timeless.

Jet Lag:  people have internal clocks that run on 24 hour intervals known as circadian rhythms.  When a person travels to another time zone or works late shifts, this biologial mechanism take a little while to catch up.

Apparently jet lag can be minimized by doing a lot of quirky little things, but lucily it’s usually only a temporary affair and minimally annoying  If you would rather not be affected by it then your best bet is probably the homeopathic remedy called “No-Jet-Lag” which can be found in most airports, pharmacies, travel stores, and health food stores.

Did you know that on Whitehead and Carolien, there are Presidental Gates?

The pilasters and their iron gate have been around since 1906

But it was on a later date that Harry Truman came here and the gates became the ceremonial entrance for the presiden to and from his Little White House and then these gatrs werrr open only for the president and visiting dignitaries.  In fact when in residents  Truman passed thru the gate daily for his daily 5-mile sprinted walks”.  in 1987 the Truman Whitehouse and the gates were open to the public and have been here ever since..

A SPOT OF SACRED GROUND
retains it sanctity over many centuries.  When the bombs of the secon World War had reduced St. Mary-le-Bow to ruins, it was discovered that its crypt was in essence a Roman Building at a depth of 18 feet a Roman road passed what must once have been the entrance to a temple about the ground.  In similar fashion it was discovered that the undercroft of All Hallows, by the Tower of London, was built of Roman brick.  It also once lay above the surface, and was used as a barber’s shop; a groove in the pavement indicates a supply of running water.  Beneath the crypt of Southwark Cathedral have been excavated statues of Neptune and of a hunter god; an altar has also been found.  There are other forms of continuity:  ecavations beneath the Treasury in WHitehall uncovered the waterlogged remains of two successive timber halls dating to the 9th century.

Where we are going today there are no oceans, and no mountains, no conquistadors and no Mickey
There are some forests, but mostly it’s rolling hills and maybe a scarce orange tree or two, and don’t forget the freshwater lakes and hammocks.  While the population centers are filled with people, most of the areas beyond these city limits are left to native species, from alligator and armadillos to bobcats, deer and a variety of other critters.  The ridge comes from the relatively high and dry blackbone of Polk Co.  But don’t worry about thr altitude giving you a nosebleed.  This is flatland Florida.
Science tells us that 10 million years ago (give or take a year or two), this area was part of the sea, a point attested to by the the whale skeltons and sea creature remains that have been found here.
Once  the water moved south the human creatures came, incluing the first native Americans at about 10,000 BC.  Tribe continue to come and die out or move on and by the 5th c the Timucuan and then the Caolsas had settled here and remained until the coming of the European and after that they suffered from the disease brought by the Spanards  and finally the English brought not only diseases but also their allies members of the Creek tribes  out of Georgia, that would eventually come to the lands and take them from those tribes that had lived on them for years—and the Creeks who would change their name to Seminole,  would remain on the lands they took from those native people who held it for so long as their own.  And the Seminoles would be forced from those same lands by the settlers who came later still.
The Seminoles would not go gently and fought 3 seperate wars with the US and reduced to a few hundred souls that had not been killed in the fighting or  lured to “peace” talks where they were captured and banished to out of  state reservations.  But those few hundred fled into the Huge Everglade swamp at the southern end of the state and they grew in numbers again and eventually they made a deal with the state of Florida and  ended up on comfortable reservations in the southern part of the state and they now  have casinos and make great money all over the state.
Come back on Tues and I’ll tell you more about the Florida you may not know so much about after all as we travel down into the cattle region of the sunshine state.

The Private Lives of the Tudors: Uncovering the Secrets of Britain’s Greatest Dynasty Hardcover – December 13, 2016

England’s Tudor monarchs—Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I—are perhaps the most celebrated and fascinating of all royal families in history. Their love affairs, their political triumphs, and their overturning of the religious order are the subject of countless works of popular scholarship. But for all we know about Henry’s quest for male heirs, or Elizabeth’s purported virginity, the private lives of the Tudors remain largely beyond our grasp.

Drowning
throughouit the ages, drowning was more often deployed to torture witches than to rid a nation of an unloved monarch.  However as a suicide method, drowning wields a romantic spell, all the way from heartbroken Artemisia’s final plunge to Virginia Woolf’s stroll with rock filled pockets into the River Ouse.  This attraction can be partly traced to a belief that drowning as a painless way to die, once the struggle for life ceased, the victim was thought to xit the world surrounded by serene visions and heavenly choirs.
No doubt this belief has roots in physical reality:  When a person drowns to death her brain becomes deprived of oxygen.  And brains deprived of oxyben typially hallucinate, whether there’s rlition involved or not.

It ws renovated in 1925 and three wings were added at a cost of $80,000.  A second building was added afte the staggering growth that accompanied the area being chose for the space program.  It is connected to the original courthouse using a covered walkway.

(check out Tuesday’s account of Bryon’s Dog’s grave here at Newstad Abbey)
Today, a winding stone stairway leads the visitors to a sinister and stark little room, knon as the Prior’s Oratory, located next door to Byron’s Befoom.  Its scarred walls and wooden rafters exude an atmosphere that is nothing short of malicious, and the portrait of a riar that hangs upon the wall projects a menacing, almost threatning, aura.  It is known to be haunted of the Abbey’s Black Friar whose appearance was a harbinger that tragdy was about to befall the family Byron swore that the Black Friar had apppeared to him on the night before his wedding.  He later described his marriage as the unhappiest event of his career, but this may have been nothing more than poetic bitchery.  The Prior’s Oratory undoubtedly is one of the most chilling parts of the house, and several guides have been taken suddenly ill upon entering its ominous interior.

TINTAGEL CASTLE: HISTORY AND LEGEND

Built half on the mainland and half on a jagged headland projecting into the Cornish sea, Tintagel Castle is one of the most spectacular historic sites in Britain. Its association with King Arthur makes it also one of the most famous.

But the history of this enigmatic place stretches back centuries before the first tales of the legendary king shrouded it in the mists of romance. Find out more about Tintagel’s history and legends below.

The US post office requested the name change because it thought “Brown Mill” would be confused with “Brownsville”.

A resident came up with the current name because it was apparently a custom to leave a dime in a box for people who carried the mail from Giddings.

The town was moved from the old mill site to be near Hwy 21, only to move again to be near the railroad when it was built.   (there’s also an Old Dime Box where some stayed by the highway).

A scene depicting ritualistic Aztec cannibalism being practiced in the Codex Magliabechiano, folio 73r.
The remains of the Aztec sacrifical victims fail to survive archaeologially to any great extent, not despite the mass scale of the killing, but because of it.
A few little spalls of bone and a handful of worked pieces are all that remains of hundreds of thousands of sacrificial victims, who were cannibalized, rendered into animal feed and displayed as trophy skulls to be shattered by the wind and rain.  The more organized and energetic a process is, the more organized and energetic its patterns of disposal and reuse.

In May 1940, the fate of World War II hangs on Winston Churchill, who must decide whether to negotiate with Adolf Hitler, or fight on knowing that it could mean the end of the British Empire.

This is a great movie of overcoming in an impossible senerio and showed me why my dad—a veteran of WWII and the envasion and liberation of Europe (he was with Patton’s 3rd)—had so much respect for the British People and Churchill.

If you haven’t seen it—try it—or if you have see it again, it might just give you the lift in mood we could all use— like then–almost the entire world is fighting a common enemy—Hang in there we can do this.

So while we’re already in England—lets check out a palace of much report—Hampton Court was built for Cardinal Wolsey—a butcher’s son who went from nothing to the church and managed to eventually be the most powerful  church official in the country answering only to the King of England—unfortunately for him that king was Henry—of 8th fame and when you  failed to produce for Henry you lost a lot and while Wolsey did not die by the king’s hand—he lost all he had and his possessions and was on his way to answer for his shortcomings before the King’s court when he became ill and resided in a city were another famous victim of the Tudors rested.

He finally did realiize his error—or maybe it was just regret when he realized his fate because of the path he chose when he uttered:

“If I had served my God as diligently as I have done the King, He would not have given me over in my grey hairs.”

Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, who died at Leicester Abbey on 29 November 1530. interestingly enough Richard III (killed by Henry VIII’s father) died near Leicester in a battle that gave the Tudors the crown, was and his body was lost due to the destructions of the monestaries by Henry VIII:  check this site for some interesting items on Wolsey’s loss.  One death gave the Tudor’s the dynasty and the other one of their most (in my mind) impressive castle.]

Searches have been done off and on since 1922 to find the man’s remains but to date all they’ve come up with is a King whose reputation has improve since the discovery.

Stress:  is a chronic condition that many of us know too well.  This constant overdose of fight and flight leads to nothing but sleepless nights and ill health.  Rest and relaxation are the best cures for stress and stress related problems, but ironically stress can actually prevent restorative sleep.  ANd with loads of stress it’s hard for our bodies to decompress within the hours of sleep alone.  So try to set aside some time during your waking hours to just sort of veg out.  The key will be to try and quiet your mind and body until they both feel rejuvenated enought to handle another round of whatever it is that you feel is important enought to put them through.

With Val Kilmer as Jim—this movie is my favorite by Kilmer—-as I told you a million times before I saw them live in Chicago:

Here’s the ticket—the pin was from the next year—also in November

Moretorium

I took part in the night march and took part in the singing—and a daytime march on Sat as well.  We drove over night from Michigan—2 guys and 3 ladies  and we stayed at a friend of one of those people we went with—-it was a time like no other wild and crazy and we had a cause—something I fear so many have lost — in the day of just being and never leaving the computer age.

As for the movie It was and is one of my favorites—-Morrison was totally self destructive, but in an age of craziness that we were living in I guess this was more the norm than we really realised at the time.

Boatswain’s Monument at Newstead Abbey

Britain boasts many other canine tombs, contradicting the complaint versified by Lord Byron to this dog Boatswain (d.1808)  At the poet’s home in Newstead Abbey, Nottinghamshire, an inscription on the octagonal monument to the pet laments that “this poor dog, in life the firmest frien
unhonour’d falls unnoticed all this worth—

The White Hart, Southwark

An inn at the sign of the “White Hart” was established in the medieval period on Borough High Street in Southwark. It is mentioned by William Shakespeare in Henry VI, Part 2 as the headquarters of the rebels in Jack Cade‘s 1450 Kentish rebellion. Louis L’Amour mentions the Southwark White Hart in “Sackett’s Land”, an historical fiction taking place circa 1600. It became one of the many famous coaching inns in the days of Charles Dickens, and it was here that Sam Weller met Mr. Pickwick in the famous scene from The Pickwick Papers, chapter 10.[24] The Inn was pulled down in the 19th century. It was next door to The George Inn and near the site of The Tabard.

Also in Southwark, but approximately 0.5 km to the west, the White Hart at 22 Great Suffolk Street was built in 1882. It survived redevelopment of the surrounding area and is now the only Victorian public house on that street.

LiVING IN FLORIDA IS NEVER NORMAL

The Torreya Tree

On thr banks of the Apalachiocola River therr are tres which grow in no other part of the world.  These rare botanical specis called thr Florifa Torreya, exist naturally in a range of only about w0 square miles of North Florida  This curious  tree, sometimes called the “gopherwood,” or “stinking cedar.” is scientifically known as Torreya Taxiolia.  It is a member of the the conifer group and resembles a yew tree.  The Torreya reahes a height of fifty feet, and has a trunk diameter of about 12″.  It can be recognized by its shiny, dark green needles, whih are about an inch and a half long.  While the tree would be expected to produce a seed cone, like other conifers, its fruit looks like a green plum.  The fruit is fleshy and yields a milky sap that. when dry is sticky like glue.  Though it is an attractive tree, it does give off a rather disagreeable odor, thus the name “stinking cedar.”

The Crown Hotel
High Street
Alton, Hampshire, UK
In 1967 workmen carrying out renovations at the 15th c. Crown Hotel knocked down a false wall near the original dining room hearth and came across the skeleton of a dog hidden in a recess.  The find appeared to give credence to one of the inn’s more persistent legends which held that at some stage in its long history, a man had beaten his dog to death against the dining room chimney breast in a fit of drunken rage.  Thereafter ghostly scratching could often be heard in the vicinity of the fireplace, sometimes accompanied by the sound of whimpering from behind the wall.  Dogs brought to the inn would often react to soomething they could either see or sense in the area of the chimney breast.  But the findings of the skelton has not rendered the haunting redundant, for visitors still inquire about the cause of the strange scuffling and franting scraping that they swear to have heard near the fireplace.

PLOT Bridge Section, Lot 1-2-3-4
MEMORIAL ID 11702785 ·

Location:  in the parking lot on the north side of 9th St, between Mass. andd New York Aves and then across the street.

St. Cloud, Fl.

https://www.visitflorida.com/en-us/cities/st-cloud.html

In 1884 the land where the city now sets was cypress swamp which were after much discussion were drained in the early 1880s. by Hamilton Disston.  Eventually the Sugar Belt Railroad was constructed from Kissimmee, on land that was just seven feet above sea level.  Disston did a secon dredged from Cross Prairie to East Lake Tohopekaliga and the water went down 8 feet.

Sam L. Lupfer, Sr (Penns) started a sugar plantation eventually bought by Drisston.  It used French and Italian workers from Louisana as well as other laborers

Captain Rufus F. Rose built and operated Disston’s sugar mill.  Legend says that he ask a goup of guests for a suggestion for the plantation and that Prof Bridges (Principle Kissimmee High School) made the suggestion but after that it is a debate over where he took the name St. Cloud from.

At Age 36 Disston was America’s largest land owner until the Panic of 1893—when he in a series of reversals etc, lost everything and $2,000,000 in mortage bonds sold by th Disston Company in 1894 wer defaulted in 1895.  In 1896 he sat in his bathtub and put a bullet through his head.   The sugar mill prospered for awhile but finally failed in 1901.

The general store became Geriatrics Manor, a nursing home this two story frame commissary and some brick foundations and granite slabs are all that remains of the mill and plantation.

Welcome to The Ensign Ewart Pub, on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

The highest pub in Edinburgh, and the closest to Edinburgh Castle, The Ensign Ewart has a rich history dating back to 1680, when the pub was first established on it’s current site. It has changed a bit since then, but it still retains much of its original charm, and always has a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

We have 4 Scottish Cask Ales, a dynamic and ever changing whisky list, a large selection of Scottish gins, live music, a fresh and locally sourced food menu, and of course, the best in Scottish hospitality!

Looking from Black Friars Lane to Ludgate Broadway, EC4

Continuing north to the top of Blackfriars Lane is the junction with Ludgate Broadway and Carter Lane, where a blue plaque on the wall to the right marks generally the Site of the Priory of the Blackfriars founded in 1278′, but unspecifically the site of its main gatehouse which stood here.  Carer Lane was once the main east to west thoroughfare when the original cathedral Church of St. Paul’s was enclosed in its own wall.  The name of the lane derives from two Carter Brothers shown as taxpayers in Caastle Baynard Ward in 1319.  A few yards along to the right is Carter Court, a narrow passage leading to a tiny enclave of modern offices built in the Georgian style.  The passage itself is lined in a thick layer of lime wash.  However, this is wattle and daub and the wooden planks hammered in with crude iron nails are sole survivors from the 16th c.  Indeed this is reputed to be the only built structure between the Monument and the Temple to have survived the Great Fire of 1666.

another of my wanderings pictures

  • The St. Augustine National Cemetery is located on the grounds of St. Francis Barracks, which is an active military installation and the state headquarters of the Florida National Guard.

The 1.4-acre cemetery has had 2,788 interments since 1828, when the first burials took place. These were soldiers stationed at St. Francis Barracks who were veterans of the Florida Indian Wars.

In 1842, three coquina pyramids were erected in the cemetery to mark the end of the second Seminole War. These are known as the Dade Monument (after Major Francis L. Dade), and beneath them are buried more than 1,400 soldiers who died during those wars.

  • After the American Civil War, the cemetery was expanded and improved, and in 1881 it became a National Cemetery. In 1970, it was included in the National Historic Landmark historic district that encompasses the oldest part of the city.

33 Pictures Of Animals Taking Over Human Spaces During COVID-19

An image of a Wendigo.

Windingo

The WIndigo can infect human, and therein lies the unique power suggested in the double meaning of its name.  The root word is Algonkian for both “evil spirit” and “cannibal,” so Windigo describes both a demon and a way of acting like one.  Any person possessed by this cannibal spirt has literally become a Winidgo and is probably incurable.  Some people choose this transformation, others happen upon it.  The latter ases are caused by being bitten, by dreaming of the WIndigo, or by being involuntarily transformed by a malevolent sorcerer.

The emaciated spirit preys upon minds in sleep. It finds the savage hunger within its host. It incubates in that red space. The craving curse. The greed virus. Transmitted down the generations. Every morning, the victim wakes up hungrier, more covetous. Those they hate, they want to devour out of spite. Those they love, they want to devour out of lust — to become a locket containing a gory cameo. “After all,” whispers the spirit, “Someone in your belly can never leave you.” The first mouthful of fellow flesh transforms the soul-sick wretch forever. More sickness than species, their accursed metabolism is a torture: however much they consume, they can never be sated. The black hole can only widen. It is a cycle of feast, famine, and fury. The cycle stretches the beast’s unnaturally long lifespan

Cannon firing at Fort Matanzas historical site in St. Augustine.
Fort Matanzas National Monument
below St Augustine along A1A in Florida
Small Spanish outpost which in Spanish Colonial time was surrounded entirely by water today it there are marshes and woodlands in the water’s place
It was set here as an early protection for St. Augustine and its much larger fort.  It served this purpose from its completion in 1742 – the time it came under US territory government in 1821.
If you have come here 200 years ago you would have to climbed a wood ladder instead of today’s stairs.  Oh and at night the ladder was raised up as part of the protective measures.  At the top the gun platform is solid filled in order to support the weight of the canons, which were the main strength of this for,  that were positioned here..
Below the Gundeck were the enlisted men’s quarters as well  as the officers, the outpost has only one at this site and often he was only a corporal or sergeant.
St. Augustine history
The Spanish flag flying above the fort is the Spanish Ensign…..which despite the king (Charles III) decreeing in 1785 for a new flag, this flag however continued to be used until the mid 1800s as a banner in the Spanish Army.

The legends and facts of Red-haired Mary
If you’ve ever been to the Burrens you will not soon forget—I first visited there with a tour (I was single traveler) and the second time when four of us traveled about Ireland—Driving ourselves all over the Emerald Isle—we’d done a week or two doing the same thing in England before that.  The area is barren and stark, with raw weather stressed rocks, old burial tombs that were just the rock frames of the former sacred site…..the beauty combined with the lonliness and the age is overwhelming for someone who is so devoted to the history and people of our past
When Cromwell’s Parlimentary Army invaded Ireland they eventually came to the Burrens (1651)
and with it Leamench Caatle
Norman built
and now occupied by a woman some describe as the “last o th great Irish Warrior Queens.
According to the legends Maire Rua—Red Mary—the myth and legend of the Burrens she was a fearless, handsome, red=haired, warrior woman chiefton”ridding on a white harger alongside her husband at the head of their lan into battle against Cromwellian’s invaders, marrying between 12 and 24 husbands and dispatchimg them all when she tired of them throught poisoning, physical violence or simply throwing them from the castle wall.”  Her death came while driving to her other castle Dromoland
https://www.dromoland.ie/  but unfortunately she’d done something worse than murder her husbands—as she rode to Dromoland she’d ticked off an old hag—who just happened to be a witch (oops).   and of course she put a curse on her and as she was riding back to her other abode her long red hair was caught in the low branches of a tree and met her fate hanging from a tree evedentually at the lane that entered her castle where she is said to haunt to this day.
