my store, just click, my store, just click, my store, just click  please try it please try it please   it’s behind that little “store” above   LOOK

No mater your age you are on a path called aging and there’s no going back.  You could try finding the #FOUNTAINOFYOUTH.   We have one in Florida ( http://www.fountainofyouthflorida.com/)  been there done that but still have wrinkles and stiff joints… So what are the alternatives?
1.  A Healthy Diet:  Full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds
2.  Consistent Exercise.  It’s one of the best things you can do to help prevent age-related memory loss. Moving boosts blood flow to your brain and helps nerve cells in the part of brain that controls your memory.  http://www.webmd.com/healthy-aging/features/7-brain-boosters-to-prevent-memory-loss
3.  Stress Less:   The most effective way to halt this destructive chain of events is to meditate, using what Dr. Benson calls “the relaxation response.” The technique involves repeating a mantra — a word, sound, phrase, or prayer — for as little as 10 minutes a day. A 2005 study conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston showed that meditation helped prevent age-related changes in the brain.     http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/health/body/head-to-toe/10-all-natural-ways-to-stay-young/
4.  Supplements:  Good daily multiple vitamin/mineral supplement.  Vitamin D3 and a bone formula.      Reason:  research has shown that supplementation with moderate doses of vitamins/minerals can increase levels and improve immune function in healthy adults.  Bone support: supports overall bone health and vitamin D has been linked with slower bone aging,.  (Mary Ann O’Dell, MSRD)
5.  Antioxidants:  Vitamins C, E, and Co-enzyme 10 to fight free radical damage (associated with cancer and heart disease as well as inflammation and skin aging)
6. Green Tea:  The full range of heath benefits may take decades to define, but research on its impact on human skin is reasonably well developed. .. can clear cell damage on the skin and repair wrinkles, blemishes or other impurities.  When applied to the skin, green tea can reduce sun damage by reducing inflammation and tackling free radicals.  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dermapproved/personal-health_b_4212190.html
7.  Water:  Since we require water to serve as the vehicle for all chemical reactions in the body as well as to flush out toxins, proper hydration becomes paramount (the daily requirement varies

FLORIDA: WHAT USE TO ROAM THE BAYOU!

The commercial of the day—don’t let my store waste away, some of the things there might make your day and show the way good day.

A couple weeks ago I did a piece on off the beaten track in Florida and got some good reviews so here we go again.

DeBARY HALL  is only a few miles off I-4 (exit 108 turn right and at Dirksen Dr right again along a road of marshy land and cabbage palms for 1/2 mile to  Mansion Blvd.—follow the signs to the Mansion which is now open to the public. )

Fredrick DeBary (Baron) was a very international man, his parents were from Belgium, but he was German and he made his fortune when at 25 he became a representative for Mumm’s (French) champagne in North America.  He lived in NYC  but on an 1870 visit to Florida he liked what he saw and in 1871 built a house at this location rather than stay at hotels .  DeBary went on to develop a river boat company that serviced the St. Johns River from Jackonville down to Lake Monroe.  (See SAGA OF BARON FREDERICK DE BARY AND DEBARY HALL, FLORIDA by Brooks for a full story on this interesting man)

The house (originally a large, fancy hunting lodge was remodeled over the years by family members–who kept the great hall into the mid-20th century– and is now more steamboat architecture ) featured indoor plumbing, a wooden swimming pool and a collection of rare birds.  Both Presidents Grant and Cleveland as well as writer Harriet Beecher Stowe, to name a few, were guest here.

It now belongs to the state and was once used as a home for the elderly, but it has been refurbished and restored to become a museum.    What you see is what it was when DeBary entertained the rich and famous.  I’ve been there more than once and it’s a great trip back to Florida’s past when millionaires not alligators roamed the bayous  http://debaryhall.com/

What did you bring back from vacation?  Ordinary chips from defunct casinos can bring in as much as $1,000 a piece (Antique Road Show).

26chip_5141625_ver1.0_640_480.jpeg (480×480)

This particular chip isn’t so valuable.  In 2008:  ” the chips were found … as a driveway was being taken out at the … Green Duck factory, which once supplied gaming tokens for cruise ships and casinos in Nevada and Atlantic City.   Tens of thousands of chips from a long-closed Playboy casino came bubbling up, dropping prices for collectors of the formerly rare chips … ” (OUCH) http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/local-news/hernandos-chips-have-truly-come-in

HERE OR ABROAD CARE IS IMPORTANT—IT CAN BE SCARY OUT THERE

First a word from our sponsor—-check out my store—all ya gotta do is reach out and click…just a little click–honest it won’t hurt…you might even like

Then: I wanted to mention something about my yesterday’s blog Gluten Free Diet:  “For people who have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity… it can make a significant difference in quality of life. For that relatively small group of people, agluten-free diet functions as a detox diet by relieving their system of an irritant.”  http://www.everydayhealth.com/digestive-health/who-really-should-be-on-a-gluten-free-diet.aspx   Otherwise it’s not a necessity.

Are you ready for that vacation that you’ve been planning all year?  Here’s some ideas you may have not thought about:

If you’re flying with an infant call the airline ahead of time and see if there are bassinets available and if you can get a bulkhead seat with room for it at your feet.  Ask to board early.

Flying with kids, night flights may be your bet bet as kids are more likely to sleep.

Traveling alone:  before the trip, read about your destination and map out tentative itinerary: without a plan you might have too much time on your hands and who wants a lonely vacation?

Traveling abroad buy a (more?) guidebook and a foreign language translator.  This is just one site with several devices:   http://www.ectaco.com/? refid=1425&gclid=CjwKEAjwjN2eBRDbyPWl0JLY5lYSJACPo0Uin4Lm2QpjoZn_R4Ya7sR7A80xOlCjQfG3LkwMtL4MhBoC86Tw_wcB

If you’re over 55 you may be eligible for senior discounts.  Ask when you make reservations or pay your fare to be sure. Don’t forget to ask about restrictions as discounts may be limited in hours or days of the week.

While you are traveling it’s important:  Hydrate —it can prevent jet lag (the more time zones you cross, the more likely you are to experience it).  Mayo Clinic studies suggest that water (not coke, or coffee or cocktails) is the best.  In USAweedend.com it is also suggested that you might consider melatonin, a natural sleep aid (which I use all the time and find it helps).

Traveling without the kids:  Include them in the discussion of the trip and make sure they understand why they can’t go.

source_1336_132618.jpg (1200×797)

Items that might be in those older homes:  14″ 1964 Beatles nodders up to $15,000 and the 8 ” ones about $400 (Antique Road Show booklet).  I actually have some Beatles stuff when I get my bigger store set up.

mKJ04ZFbR0FAFjBWQSpbIbQ.jpg (225×221)

Or an authentic “Route 66” sign for around $300. (traveled it when I was 19 or 20)

Traveling by car:  Take an extra map and a colored pencil and let the kids mark your progress.  Helps with the “are we there yet?” comments.

FICTION IS FUN BUT NOT WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR HEALTH—INVESTIGATE BEFORE YOU COMMIT TO FADS

I WILL BE ADDING NEW STUFF TO THE STORE AGAIN THIS WEEK SO DON’T FORGET TO LOOK SEE  just go to the store above and click

One thing I have noticed in my years as a nurse is that we have became a nation of health fadists many of which are at best silly and result in the companies pushing the fad achieving high sales; to down right dangerous (I think of the micro-biotic diets in the 70’s on which people actually starved)

A few years back I took an Herbal class  (http://emilyruff.com/) in which our instructor advised us that Soy was not the cure all that we were being told and that there were several categories of persons that might do better without it.    One she mentioned:  “… last year’s “lowered sperm count” story (based on a study of the diets of 99 men by the Harvard School of Public Health)” Has been proven so true.  On the other hand it has been found to be useful for preventing bowel  cancer (Vanderbilt University school of medicine  Nashville,Tennessee)  and menopause symptoms in women as a replacement for hormones that have lost favor lately due to cancer risks.

“Most of the human studies to date (like the latest bowel cancer study) have involved Asian populations with different lifestyles, diets, genetic make-up and ability to metabolise soy and phytoestrogens (which they traditionally eat in far greater quantities than the average Westerner).”  http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/features/soya-good-or-bad-for-you-1678930.html

Another:  Gluten is to this decade what carbohydrates were to the last one and fat was to the ’80s and ’90s:…the cause of all that ails you—and the elimination of which can heal you. ..as the Wall Street Journal reports…in a splendid and about-time piece, a whole lot of that is flat-out hooey, a result of trendiness, smart marketing, Internet gossip and too many people who know too little about nutrition saying too many silly things.  http://time.com/2912311/eat-more-gluten-the-diet-fad-must-die/

Those are just a few.  Stop following fads--research a new food or life style before you consider it and here’s a new idea:  Eating a healthy well balanced diet,  exercising regularly, and getting a good night sleep. It isn’t popular but it works.

Check your boxes for Ketcham & McDougal thimbles (1900’s)  up to $1,000

m3-KbcD9OCXFC1IFdCYVUxQ.jpg (225×169)

Here’s one I missed: “the tapeworm diet,...early 20th century… Swallow a bunch of beef tapeworm pills, happily consume excess calories….partially digested by your newfound friend, and then take medicine to rid your guest…FDA intervened, banning this …fad. http://uk.askmen.com/top_10/fitness/top-10-bizarre-health-fads_1.html

Fads are the kiss of death. When the fad goes away, you go with it.   Conway Twitty

This is a exciting read with #goodandbadvampires, lots of murder and sucking blood and a non-stop adventure from Scotland to New Orleans and in between

Now on to some really important information.

Did you know that a collective of pandas is a cupboard?   So why a cupboard I ask myself, but the answer doesn’t really tell me why:  According to 100 Fact About Pandas (O’Doherty et. al) In 1866 the Royal Society Symposium decided to choose a Collective Name for the beasts (others being used at the time included a dream and a slick)  after a 3 hour debate a secret ballot was held and Cupboard won.  I like the Zebra one better–a Zeal.

FACT:  Of people who play the radio in their cars, approximately 75% sing along (do you ever wonder how and why studies like these are done/ maybe they just take a secret ballot and come up with the most popular)

CELTIC  QUAICH is a two-handed Scottish drinking cup traditionally used for a quest’s welcome and farewell drinks.  It has more currently used at weddings and christenings to toast the health of the happy couple or new baby.

The Celts were dominant in Europe from 750 BC – 12 BC,  when the tribes declined after the Roman invasion, but the Celtic languages, art and traditions have mingled with Christianity and traditions and have survived.

BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL BUT CAN IT DO ALL THAT’S CLAIMED

FIRST ISSUE OF THE DAY—HAVE YOU CHECKED OUT MY STORE–WORD IS THAT THERE’S A a#MONSTER LURKING THERE AND A NEW CATEGORY:  #BEER—NOW THAT YOU MIGHT LIKE!

The other day I saw a book by a couple of doctors on the “Magical Egyptian herb”  Black Cumin.  The book claims that the herb helps allergies, asthma and immune disorders.  It also quotes the Prophet Mohammed as declaring:  “Black Cumin heals every disease except for death.”  It is further recommended for cold, headaches, toothaches and infection.

After looking through multiple (5 including Lust’s HERB BOOK) I finally found a reference to Cumin in HEALING HERBS & SPICES by Heinerman where it was recommended for use in a #poultice for abdominal pain and for a recipe of #Cumin-Flavored Game Hen.  No references to Egyptian or Black.

The internet wasn’t much help with only a few sites:   a couple  selling the spice which always gives me pause  as it is hard to determine  how much is promotion and how much facts.  A blog which proposed its use for more things than what the book authors suggested but not exactly an expert source.

Back to the books (I have quite a nice library) six more this time including the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF FRUITS, VEGETABLES, NUTS, AND SEEDS FOR HEALTHFUL LIVING (by Kadahs) which included garlic and sunflower seeds, etc and  the other GUIDE TO NATURAL HOME REMEDIES (by Bestic) which included thyme and hop to name a few.   No Cumin!

All in all I’d say that at this point I would use other herbs that have better support from the “experts.”

For example:  Dr. James Balch and CNC Phyllis A Balch recommend in their book PRESCRIPTION FOR NUTRITIONAL HEALING:  Natural beta carotene or carotenoid complex for protection and repair of lung tissue.  Coenzyme Q10 for improved circulation and breathing and Chlorophyll to keep tissues free of toxic substances. (consult a your physician–there are many out there with “natural” training now or who have herbalist consultants)

OK closet searching today:  You probably don’t have one this old  but

DID YOU KNOW THAT—IF YOU DID IT MIGHT SAVE YOU—MONEY THAT IS

First of all there’s that pesky ole store lurking at the top of the page…I’m changing out items daily so don’t forget to give it a peek.

We’re always looking for better at less (cost that is) so I thought  that I could find you some for today’s blog.

According to ConsumerReports ( good source, non-profit, indepent researchers):

The #Apple iPhone 5s ($200) is a good phone, but the #Samsung Galaxy S 4 ($200) has a superb display and a better battery life.

The #Panasonic Viera TC-L55WT60 (flat-screen $3,000) has a very good picture quality but the #LG55GA7900  ($1,400) has a better picture and sound quality.

#Tylenol ( generic acetaminophen) is great for our stomach but does little or nothing to reduce inflammation, while  #Aleve (generic naproxen) might be a better choice for that.

Want a coffeemaker, vacuum or small appliance best choice for price , selection and service of major retailers:  #Costco.

To save more than $1,000 on your cell phone bill:  Consider #T-Mobile  (family of four over 2 years)

Best buy on a vacuum #Kenmore Elite 31140 ($350) performs well and has plenty of airflow through the hose or tools (upright w/a bag) Try ConsumerReports:  How to Clean Practically Anything booklet for more.

DON’T use your #debit card at the gas pump—thieves “skim” your pin number and pull cash from your bank account–use your credit card (safer)..

Want more room in your new vehicle CR recommends #Chevrolet Traverse & GMC Acadia for good 3rd row room and the Mazda CX-9 for lot of room everywhere.

To get the most out of your #doctor’s visit (especially when you’re sick) take a friend or relative with you and take notes and make sure you understand the doctor’s instructions.

THEY DON’T COME WITH INSTRUCTIONS…MAYBE THEY SHOULD

OK first check the store—the store—the store.  just look up and place you finger on the right place and click…I’m adding some new (and removing some old) items this week…so check it out.   PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

Many of us have them:  Pets —“A pet (or companion animal) is an animal kept primarily for a person’s company or protection, as opposed to working animalssport animalslivestock, and laboratory animals, which are kept primarily for performance, agricultural value, or research. ”  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet

Most pet owners have dogs: about 70 million of them in 36.5% of U.S. homes. Cats, at 74 million, are in 30.4% of homes.  (note that while there are more people with dogs there are actually more cats–you can’t own just one )  http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2012-08-06/pet-ownership-down/56882786/1

Just over half of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese, and 58 percent of cats are carrying too many pounds, according to a survey from the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention.   http://www.cbsnews.com/news/more-than-half-of-u-s-pets-are-overweight-or-obese-survey-finds/

Keeping a dog/cat healthy starts with a good diet and according to April 2014  THE HEALTHY EDGE  some ways to make for a better diet is:

Buy organic, whenever you can

Avoid foods that contain:  Animal bi-products, antibiotics, hormones, artificial colors/dyes, artificial flavors and chemical preservatives

Find a combination of animal and plant foods

Get foods with whole grains

Look for ‘CONTAINS NO PRESERVATIVES’   “No preservatives added”  may have them in the ingredients that makes up the food.

Do some research—read manufacturers’ literature or websites to learn about ingredients, processing etc.

You may want to add supplements

Or try making your own food

DOGS:  Avoid chocolate, onions, grapes and raisins which are toxic—Salt and pepper are irritants and foods cooked in oils or other fats upset stomachs

CATS:  Beware canned food contains moisture, but dry food can lead to dehydration as cats don’t always drink enough water.  And that water should be filtered as cats will often avoid water with chemicals in it.    AVOID: all the stuff for dogs plus coffee, tea, green tomatoes, nuts, rhubarb, pork, salt, sugar and raw forms of fish, eggs and potatoes

Advise for those treasures in your closets or basements:  Do not have monograms or engravings removed from silver before trying to sell it.  It lowers the value.  Monograms of famous people and unusual inscriptions abut events or prizes add to the value.

Check those cabinets:  an old Griswold #1 skillet can sell for $4,000.

NORTH OF THE RIVER AND LOST IN TIME…NOT A GHOST TOWN BUT

Be sure to take in my store above just for a quick look…please I have some great stuff.

This weekend I had a meeting in Deltona (unless you live in Central Florida you probably never heard of it) and got there early, so I wandered around and I found (it didn’t know it was lost) Enterprise, a town  allot old and a bit new and a so very lost between the two.

Enterprise is an unincorporated community in Volusia County, in the U.S. state of Florida, and its former county seat. Situated on the northern shore of Lake Monroe, it is flanked by the cities of DeBary and Deltona. Enterprise was once the head of navigation on the St. Johns River and at various times, the county seat for three counties: Mosquito, Orange, and Volusia…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise,_Florida

Enterprise developed around a plantation built by Cornelius Taylor in the early 1800s.  The plantations (there were many) that developed in the area took advantage of the high price of sugar and the St. Johns river provided the highway to ship the product to the world.  By the 1840’s smaller farms grew corn, peas and sweet potato crops.

By the time Florida became a state Enterprise had been the county seat of Orange (it’s now in Volusia) for at least two years.

But steam boats brought tourists too and by the early 1850’s Enterprise boasted the Brock Hotel (named  and built for  the Captain who owned several of the steamers) and shared (with Sanford–by 1850’s  the county seat) the title of southernmost  city for the steam lines.  FLASHBACKS  By J. Robison and M. Andrews

But the arrival of the rail road made the boats and Enterprise obsolete and Florida’s boom ended a few years before the Great Depression.

Today the hotel grounds are occupied by the Methodist Children’s Home, the All Saint’s Episcopal Church one of the few original buildings to remain, a lovely reminder of the town’s great glories.

A HAUNTED HOUSE IN KEY WEST—WHERE DO I APPLY FOR THE JOB?

DROPPING A BOOK RIGHT AFTER YOU CHECK OUT MY STORE—JUST CLICK ON THE WORD—STORE—DUH—ABOVE AND I THANK YOU.

Today’s book is by Heather Graham  (http://www.eheathergraham.com/) , a Florida resident that writes a lot about Key West, entitled

THE CURSED  (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18528417-the-cursed)

it’s  a good summer read…a mystery loaded with assorted ghosts, murder and mayham and what better place than in Key Weird.  Try it (both the book and Key West) you will more than likely like them.

Let’s do an weird- island day:

Yes dear even the dead in Key West are a bit… ah…weird… Take the centrally located and highest point on the island cemetery:  Florida’s first millionaire, William Curry is at rest beneath a tall, elaborately decorated marble shaft. … On Fourth Avenue in the graveyard is the statue of Earl Saunders Johnson, the shoes are really his shoes encased in plaster. On down the rows of graves there is the one of a … Thomas Romer with the inscription “Good citizen for 65 of his 108 years.” There is a (toy) airplane on top of one crypt, which over the years has been painted different colors. The most talked about inscriptions in the cemetery is one that says, “Devoted Fan of Julio Iglesias” and the marble tablet for Pearl Roberts, which says, “I told you I was sick.” (she was a waitress and local hypochondriac)     http://weirdus.com/states/florida/cemetery_safari/key_west_graves/index.php

Robert the Doll that was once owned by Key West painter and author Robert Eugene Otto. The doll is said to be possessed by evil spirits, and has a terrifying reputation.   Neighbors claimed to have seen the doll moving from window to window when the family was out. Sometimes the doll would emit a terrifying giggle..”  It is now at the Mortello Museum near the Airport.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_the_Doll

and are there any Island items on Google?
