C.J. Sansom (Christopher John “C.J.” Sansom is a British writer of crime novels. He was born in 1952 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was educated at the University of Birmingham, where he took a BA and then a PhD in history. After working in a variety of jobs, he decided to retrain as a solicitor. He practised in Sussex as a lawyer for the disadvantaged, before quitting to work full-time as a writer. This is the first in a series of murder mysteries set in the time of Henry VIII and featuring Matthew Shardlake, an attorney with a hunch back but a brilliant mind in the days when many believed the disability was an indication of evil. This book deals with Henry’s dissolution of the Monasteries and a death of one of his agents at one. It is a time of change, with the reform on one side and the old ways on the other. An excellent read.
