AND THE HONORABLE MENTION:

THE VINTAGE VIEW

Picture

Step back in time at this multi-dealer mini mall.  There is something here for everyone. You will be amazed at the huge selection of collectibles, jewelry, antiques, and vintage linens.

INSTEAD OF A BANQUET—have a picnic—-If you live where the weather isn’t hospitable for an outside gig  set up a table cloth on the floor by the tree or if you have one the fire place.  Use holiday paper plates and colored plastic ware.  The contents of feast is up to you—turkey sandwiches and potato salad can do it for Thanksgiving (ham for Christmas) or do the whole meal (a nice reversal is the whole traditional meal and maybe fine wine on paper plates and plastic wine glasses) just eat it on the floor….with holiday channel music on the TV.    If you live in warmer climes then go outside—set up a table—fine dinning  or picnic fare (or a combination there of)….and do some décor and lights on the trees or shrubs there by.    That’s a start don’t expect me to do everything.

GET IT ALL TOGETHER:  Live in an over 55 apartment complex….and are far from friends and family—talk to the staff who manage the place to see if you can have Holiday Events where others in the same position have a chance to get together and save the holidays.  This can be something simple like a Thanksgiving Met UP to a share a feast for Christmas….there are all kinds of possibilities and the less the staff has to do (and the concept that it isn’t going to cost them) and a chance to use the event for advertising the place’s ambiance and good will might well put your ideas into action.

DO SOMETHING ELSE:
In Sanford Florida on Thanksgiving  http://www.stjohnsrivershipco.com/ there’s a cruise on the River—a nice day with a boat full of people on a paddlewheel riverboat with lunch including all the trimmings…a beautiful view on the St. John’s, music and good will.
There’s a Polar Express Train in NChttp://www.romanticasheville.com/great_smoky_mountain_train_polar_express.htm  that runs through the holidays—am not sure if they do Christmas —worth it for you to check out.

GIVE SOMETHING MORE
Many churches all over the world provide gifts, meals or even home visits on Thanksgivings and Christmas to feed the destitute and comfort the elderly.  Check with your pastor or other leaders if you’d like to help.  Sometimes it seems to me that the real spirit of the holidays has no better representation than to give of ourselves….this takes your time (and often your family can assist–what better example and interaction with your kids than a selfless act).  http://www.needhelppayingbills.com/html/central_florida_free_holiday_a.html
YOU CAN GIVE YOURSELF  many elderly persons in nursing homes especially spend the holidays and most other days of their lives alone.  Check in your area for possibilities from delivering gifts and goodies to making visits on the big days.
and don’t forget your own relatives that are shut away in a home, assistant living or an apartment:   P.S.  don’t forget the kids:  http://knoxville.citymomsblog.com/how-to-visit-the-nursing-home-with-kids/

THE FOOD
Some how our holidays have become a marathon eating event—we cook until we are exhausted and we have left overs till we throw them away.
The alternatives:
If you have a smaller family (or if it’s just the two of you or if you’re just a few siblings) a restaurant might be a nice way to enjoy the day:
Options:  To meet at the restaurant, eat and go your way.
Meet at one of your homes maybe for a appetizer or drink, or to open gifts if it’s Christmas and then go to the restaurant and then you could either:
All go your separate ways
or return to the original location
or go to another family members home.
In this list of options you could add drinks and dessert at the other location or maybe to watch a movie that you all enjoy on the holiday….or look at family photos of the holiday past and take more for review at the holiday future.  The options are endless depending on what you and your family wants to do.
Something a bit pricier if you live in Central Florida for instance Disney has multiple offerings in the parks themselves as well as in the areas with restaurants which don’t require admissions.  This would be a fun thing for visitors that were down here to see Disney anyway and if it fits your budget could be a special treat (perhaps a present) to the child who loves the magic herehttp://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2013/11/thanksgiving-christmas-day-ideas-for-dining-at-walt-disney-world-resort/
OR ORDER THE DINNER INGREDIENTS.  I have a group of friends, that don’t have family locally, to have dinner with me.  When my husband was alive this grew to a huge undertaking, but now I keep it smaller–everybody  who comes volunteers something or is asked if they don’t have a preference.  Since it’s at my house I provide the ham and some sides which I shamelessly admit I get from Honey Baked Ham http://www.honeybaked.com/
which everybody loves and which makes my life so……..so…..much easier.  Another place that’s great for your dinner efforts is Publix which I have used before for my holiday needs:  http://ww2.publix.com/food/entertaining/events/Holiday-Spirit/Home.do  but I am sure that if you put a request in Google for local providers of already made or at least ready to bake, cook or whatever you’ll find bunches of stuff locally.

DSC_0263
AND THEN THERE’S THE DECORATIONS:
If you have children it’s mandatory but I find they’re happy to help and unless the decorations are family heirlooms the breakage is made up in the enjoyment and bonding time with your children.  So the décor isn’t House and Gardens…the fact that the kids can tell grandma that they did it themselves will not only explain the upside down items but turn the sight from a “oops” to a “that is so cute” in seconds.  And you find that that “job” TURNED OUT TO BE moments to remember.  Be sure to have a camera or phone available for pictures and video of the process to entertain and embarrass the kids for years on end.
Just you or you and the signif other?—see if you can get them to help.  Start at the beginning of Nov. (like now ) for Thanksgiving (which is usually much less décor intensive) and about the Sunday after Thanksgiving for Christmas.  Set a box where you have to pass it several times a day and make a point of picking up a set number of ornaments and placing them about the house, you’ll be surprised how fast it begins to look a lot like Christmas.  If you don’t get them all up—-Ah well there’s no fine for not using them all.
Just moved or on your own for the first time…what ever ornaments can be obtained from a lot of sources.  If you have kids there’s no end to what they can make:  http://www.bhg.com/christmas/ornaments/easy-ornaments-kids-can-make/    If you have the time and inclination you can do it yourself and if you’re  retired, between jobs etc.  this will help put you in the spirit while giving you memories and skills.  http://www.countryliving.com/diy-crafts/how-to/g1070/easy-to-make-christmas-ornament-crafts/
No kids, no inclination and/or very little money—try resale shops:  http://www.goodwill.org/donate-and-shop/shop-at-goodwill/   I have found some great things for pennies to add to my holiday cheer. Or you can try Dollar and discount stores which often have cheap but fun items to transform your house into Holiday Central.  https://deals.dollartree.com/custserv/custserv.jsp?pageName=StoreLocations

OK I THOUGHT WE’D DO THIS WEEK BY GETTING YOU FORTIFIED FOR THE HOLIDAYS.    Today do naturals.
 DSC_0227
you can always drink….but that’s not really considered natural—though it is a favorite of mine—but maybe first try smelling something:
LAVENDER FOR INSTANCE.     IT comes in oils. lotions, sprays, infusions, and has been shown in tests to helps you relax.   Japanese studies (2005) even showed that it  causes  positive changes in heart  rates and brain functions and there are even theories that it can ease the intensity of pain, and calm those with various anxiety issues.    A Chinese study for instance showed it increased sleep quality.  While others have shown that it treats depression, respiratory issues, fever, headaches, skin problems and muscle pain.
So now that you’re coming up on stress try a candle scented with it (lightly you do not have to drown yourself in the scent), or spritz some oil on your pillow.  Really wanta get into it:  soak in a tub with lavender bath salts.  When all else fails or you don’t have the time or whatever, try a cup of lavender teahttp://www.pukkaherbs.com/
DSC_0229
EAT TO ENERGIZE–WHILE THIS ITEM WITH CHICKEN AND BLACK BEANS ISN’T horrible, if you want energy for what you have to do,  try to include veggies in your eating plan:
stimulating form of natural energy.
They also support  digestive health
which can’t be bad given all the stomach stunning stuff you eat during the holidays.
Drink  red wine for its resveratrol to balance your blood sugar, enhance your physical and mental abilities and enjoy many more holidays or less fun but probably better for you are resveratrol supplements.
Eat to combat stress:
Adaptogen herbs (suma and eleuthero)
Eat Garlic to combat possible infections that show up in the winter,
And try Bee Pollen to enhance and increase your energy and endurance.
DSC_0232
LOOK GOOD FOR THE parties and event:
Keep your hair healthy:
Heat is drying and can damage your hair:  Try to let your hair dry naturally at least a couple of times a week.  If you must use it (and heated styling tools) put them at the lowest heat and use leave in conditioners to protect your hair.
Use Natural products to protect your hair further.
EAT Salmon and omega enriched eggs for stronger hair.
Increase your iron intake if your hair is thin or thinning:
Sources of iron:
Red meat
Dark meat poultry
Clams
Cocoa
Molasses
Pumpkin &  sesame seeds
Lentils
Cooked spinach
and make sure you’re getting enough zinc:
Pumpkin seeds
Peanuts
Cashews
Dark chocolate
Oysters
DSC_0238
 DSC_0257
DSC_0244
Look  good:
Eat  Asparagus (lightly cooked)  for its zinc and Vitamin C as well as other skin-beautify nutrients  that reduce puffiness and swelling.
And Salmon, Spinach and Cauliflower to keep skin smooth and firm as well as reducing risks of skin cancer.
Don’t forget almonds  and /or Avocados which keep the skin smooth and prevent  UV ray damage.
Add Ruby Red Grapefruit, tomatoes and guava to prevent skin colorations.
Detoxify  with Arugula and  protect with Blackberries.

Clinical studies in humans with high doses (2–12 grams) of curcumin have shown few side-effects,[4] with some subjects reporting mild nausea or diarrhea.[5] More recently, curcumin was found to alter iron metabolism by chelating iron and suppressing the protein hepcidin, potentially causing iron deficiency in susceptible patients.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curcumin

Curcumin, a substance in turmeric, may help to reduce inflammation. Several studies suggest that it might ease symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, like pain and inflammation. At this time, there isn’t enough evidence to recommend curcumin for preventing or treating cancer, but research is ongoing.  Curcumin, a substance found in the spice turmeric, has long been used in Asian medicine to treat a variety of maladies. Now some research suggests that curcumin may help prevent or treat cancer.          http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/cancer/expert-answers/curcumin/faq-20057858

To be honest this is not an herbal I know a lot about which is why I decided to add to my  knowledge and yours by exploring it for my Blog today.  I do know that Kyolic offers it in its line of products www.kyolic.com (as usual I am mentioning this for information only I am not recommending just letting you know they do have it in their product line).

Curcumin has been shown to exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer activities and thus has a potential against various malignant diseases, diabetes, allergies, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and other chronic illnesses. These effects are mediated through the regulation of various transcription factors, growth factors, inflammatory cytokines, protein kinases, and other enzymes    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17569205

In addition to being a possible inhibitor to the formation of tumors and its blocking of inflammation (Bharat B. Aggarwal, PhD, University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Texas) it is also thought to be helpful in preventing cataracts and has traditionally been used as an anti-wrinkle preparation.

Partial support is provided for the antidepressant effects of curcumin in people with major depressive disorder, evidenced by benefits occurring 4 to 8 weeks after treatment.

Limitations

Investigations with larger sample sizes, over extended treatment periods, and with varying curcumin dosages are required.

One of the most promising new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease may already be in your kitchen. Adding spice – in the form of curcumin supplements – to the daily diets of people with risk factors for heart disease may lower inflammation, a new study suggests.

The researchers didn’t examine the effect of curcumin on any diseases, and it was a fairly brief study, so it’s not clear what the long-term implications may be they caution in their report….achieved when curcumin was added to a standard drug therapy regimen, and patients should be careful not to replace their prescribed drugs with curcumin without prior consultation with their physician.  Reutershttp://www.reuters.com/article/2015/01/28/us-health-inflammation-curcumin-idUSKBN0L12LX20150128#dvxGKwXYXrx17vsM.99

Tumeric is also used in a supplemental form to help prevent or combat migraines by treating associated inflammation.

Anecdotal and scientific evidence suggests curcumin promotes health because it lowers inflammation, but it is not absorbed well by the body. Most curcumin in food or supplements stays in the gastrointestinal tract, and any portion that’s absorbed is metabolized quickly.

Curcumin powder was mixed with castor oil and polyethylene glycol in a process called nano-emulsion (think vinaigrette salad dressing), creating fluid teeming with microvesicles that contain curcumin. This process allows the compound to dissolve and be more easily absorbed by the gut to enter the bloodstream and tissues.    https://news.osu.edu/news/2014/11/06/new-research-adds-spice-to-curcumin%E2%80%99s-health-promoting-benefits/

Tumeric (mixed with other herbals)  is also used topically to ease the pain of shingles.  It is also taken orally to help treat the condition which is an inflammation.    It is warned to not use Curcumin (or Tumeric) internally if you have gastritis, stomach ulcers, gall stones or bile duct obstruction.

Curcumin stimulates the gallbladder to produce bile, which some people think may help improve digestion. The German Commission E, which determines which herbs can be safely prescribed in Germany, has approved turmeric for digestive problems. And one double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that turmeric reduced symptoms of bloating and gas in people suffering from indigestion    https://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/herb/turmeric

Tumeric is also used as yellow coloring in curries, with rice and grains, in garam masala, and in lentil dishes.

It is chiefly cultivated in south east Asia and was used in Thailand to dye the robes of Buddhist monks.  It is widely used both as a coloring and flavoring agent in a variety of foods.

It is used in Chinese medicine to treat shoulder pain, menstrual cramping and colic.

The US dietary guidelines for adequate daily chromium intake were lowered in 2001 from 50–200 µg for an adult to 30–35 µg (adult male) and to 20–25 µg (adult female).[4] These amounts were set to be the same as the average amounts consumed by healthy individuals. Consequently, it is thought that few Americans are chromium deficient   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromium_deficiency
So here we are again to C-2 UR HEALTH WITH CHROMIUM TODAY
DSC_0053
Chromium helps us use the carbohydrate and fat from our diets. This mineral also can affect the amount of fat and protein in our bodies. For this reason, many athletes are interested in chromium. Talk to your doctor before taking a supplement    http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/food/nutrition/nutrition/dietary_guide/hgic4071.html
A recent study (published Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology) found that in people with type 2 Diabetes Chromium significantly improved both short and long term levels of blood sugar.
DSC_0054
Cr(III) deficiency has been associated with

  • cardiovascular disease,
  • decreased lean body mass,
  • decreased sperm count,
  • elevated percent body fat,
  • fasting hyperglycemia,
  • glucosuria,
  • impaired fertility,
  • impaired glucose tolerance, and
  • maturity-onset diabetes.

Chromium Deficiencies can contribute (along with other minerals) to:

Fatigue

High blood pressure

Headaches

Elevated cholesterol or triglyceride

Blood sugar disturbance

The possibility of DNA damage was suggested by studies of chromium picolinate in cell cultures. There is no evidence of such an effect in any living organism..

The only adverse effects of chromium picolinate I’ve read about occurred in isolated cases. In one, a woman who took 1,200 to 2,400 mcg daily over four to five months developed kidney failure and impaired liver function. In another, kidney failure occurred five months after taking 600 mcg of chromium picolinate daily for six weeks. And, a healthy 24 year old man reportedly developed reversible, acute renal failure after two weeks on a supplement that contained chromium picolinate as the main ingredient.

Experts don’t know how much chromium people need. So there is no recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for chromium. Instead, experts came up with a minimum amount of chromium that people should get.

Adequate Intakes (AI) of Chromium

Women, aged 19-50 25 mcg/day
Women, aged 50 and older 20 mcg/day
Men, aged 19-50 35 mcg/day
Men, aged 50 and over 30 mcg/day

Many people get more chromium than that. However, no one knows exactly how much more is safe. Some researchers suggest that 1,000 micrograms a day should be considered the upper limit. Excessive doses of chromium may actually worsen insulin sensitivity.

The doses used in clinical studies vary. For example, for diabetes, people have taken 200-1,000 micrograms daily, split two to three times a day.

Bilberry (European Blueberry) leaves are rich in manganese and chromium as well as tannin.  The leaves have been used to lower blood sugar in diabetics which would be consistent with their chromium content, but due to lack of scientific studies and the danger to diabetics in using untried methods like this for treatment is highly discouraged–always consult your doctor before trying any new treatment.

The body needs chromium for normal growth and health. For patients who are unable to get enough chromium in their regular diet or who have a need for more chromium, chromium supplements may be necessary. They are generally taken by mouth but some patients may have to receive them by injection. Chromium helps your body use sugar properly. It is also needed for the breakdown of proteins and fats.

Injectable chromium is given by or under the supervision of a health care professional. Other forms are available without a prescription.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) finally incorporated a discussion of chromium into their 2006 Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes guidelines (ADA. 2006). The ADA discourages chromium supplementation stating, “Benefit from chromium supplementation in people with diabetes or obesity has not been conclusively demonstrated and, therefore, cannot be recommended” (ADA, 2006).    http://www.diabetesaction.org/site/PageServer?pagename=complementary_october_06

The term is thought to have originated in the 1850s as “lime-juicer”,[3] and was later shortened to “limey”.[4] It was originally used as a derogatory word for sailors in the Royal Navy, because of the Royal Navy’s practice since the beginning of the 19th century of adding lemon juice or lime juice to the sailors’ daily ration of watered-down rum (known as grog), in order to prevent scurvy. Initially, it was actually lemon juice that was used as the additive to grog on the British Royal Navy ships, and at the time, the terms “lemon” and “lime” were used interchangeably to refer to citrus fruits.[5] The ascorbic acid content of lemons helped make these sailors some of the healthiest at the time due to Vitamin C’s ability to prevent scurvy.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limey

Hungarian biochemist Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgi first isolated vitamin C in 1928. He isolated the vitamin from the adrenals of animals as part of ongoing research on the chemistry of cell respiration. Later, he noted paprika was a good source of the vitamin he had discovered.      http://vitamins.lovetoknow.com/Interesting_Facts_About_Vitamin_C

OUR C-HEALTH WEEK TODAY IS THE VITAMIN BY THE SAME LETTER….

Intravenous Vitamin C may have the ability to retard cancer growth.  The Canadian Medical Association Journal in their Commentary High-dose vitamin C therapy: Renewed hope or false promise? states that there is recent evidence from laboratory experiments to support the possibility that high-dose intravenous treatment might be effective and that “there is both ample interest and evidence to support research of high-dose vitamin C administered intravenously as a treatment for cancer.”    http://blog.timesunion.com/holistichealth/some-interesting-facts-about-vitamin-c/4413/http://blog.timesunion.com/holistichealth/some-interesting-facts-about-vitamin-c/4413/
Note this is currently being utilized by using it to improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy and reduce its side effects.
Vitamin C is certainly being touted for a lot of things lately:  in a study of overweight and obese people in Colorado it was found that 500 mg of time released of the vitamin produced the same results as exercising in regards to lowering the risk of heart disease.
DSC_0015
Contrary to popular belief, stocking up on vitamin C won’t help. Linus Pauling, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist, popularized the idea of taking high doses of vitamin C to ward off colds. But when put to the test, this cold remedy doesn’t actually work. If you take at least 0.2 grams of vitamin C every day, you’re not likely to have any fewer colds, but you may have colds that are a day or two shorter. When symptoms start to appear, drizzling packets of Emergen-C into glass after glass of water won’t help either. The vitamin is no more effective than a placebo at reducing how long we suffer from cold symptoms.   http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/five-surprising-facts-about-the-common-cold-23293218/#ZOL1a4ibY5hdMgTE.99
Even though vitamin C doesn’t actually cure the common cold studies have confirmed that during illnesses our body needs vitamin C in much higher amounts…so even if it doesn’t cure your cold you may need much more  of the vitamin every 24-hrs during the illness.
Recent test show the benefits of Vitamin C to include:
Improved immune function
Less risk of progressive heart disease and diabetes
Reduced allergy symptoms.

One cup of chopped kale has 134 percent of your recommended daily intake of vitamin C, while a medium orange fruit has 113 percent of the daily C requirement. That’s particularly noteworthy because a cup of kale weighs just 67 grams, while a medium orange weighs 131 grams. In other words? Gram for gram, kale has more than twice the vitamin C as an orange.   http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/30/kale-facts-nutrition-info_n_3671210.html

Vitamin C supplements come in pills or chewable form as well as a powdered vitamin (typically 1 mg of C in 1/4 tsps.).  The powder can be mixed in water or juice and if you have an issue with it being too acid you can add baking soda (just a tiny bit) to the mix—but normally if you can eat vinegar on a salad you should be OK with the powder.

While discussing the impending nuptials do you remember what status Claire wasn’t anymore but Jamie was—it was in this scene when he admitted to his lack of in-service.
He laid me carefully back in the grass, the feathery blossoms of the cow parsley seeming to float in the air around his head. He bent forward and kissed me, softly, and kept on kissing me as he unbuttoned my dress, one button at a time, teasing, pausing to reach a hand inside and play with the swelling tips of my breasts. CAFFEINE HAS gone the gauntlet from bad guy and hero so often I am getting whip lash from watching.   A recent study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise https://www.acsm.org/public-information/acsm-journals/medicine-science-in-sports-exercise  In the study there were findings that caffeine could improve a skilled golfer’s game.  Though the study was very limited (only 12 golfers in a two game tournament) the findings included those taking caffeine having less fatigue and more energy as well as improved performance which was demonstrated in scores.

Memory has thought to be affected by the use of caffeine but testing has not been consistent and varies with the time of day the caffeine was  ingested as well as the type of short term memory being tested.   “People with low caffeine intake have a decreased performance later in the day, compared to moderate and a high-level caffeine intake. Results are interesting but do not conclusively determine that caffeine impairs or improves short-term memory compared to a control group.”  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effect_of_caffeine_on_memory

About 90% Americans consume caffeine daily (coffee,
tea, soft drinks or chocolate) and many have acknowledged unpleasant symptoms when  their source of caffeine is withdrawn.
The terms “caffeine addiction” and “caffeine dependence” are commonly used, but to date, there is not scientific proof that caffeine meets the criteria to induce a complete addiction. Several case studies, however, have shown that caffeine was able to induce a clinical dependence similar to that induced by other psychoactive drugs in some people. There is also a lack of scientific evidence to show that severe side effects are associated with stopping caffeine use.  http://coffeetea.about.com/od/caffeinehealth/fl/Caffeine-Addiction.htm?utm_term=Caffeine%20Addiction&utm_content=p1-main-1-title&utm_medium=sem-rel&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=adid-d347e308-c613-47fe-915b-84a63e9977d3-0-ab_gsb_ocode-4578&ad=semD&an=google_s&am=broad&q=Caffeine%20Addiction&dqi=&o=4578&l=sem&qsrc=6&askid=d347e308-c613-47fe-915b-84a63e9977d3-0-ab_gsb

Caffeine has  an effect on some people’s blood pressure, but not all,  according to the Mayo Clinic as some people seem to develop a tolerance to the caffeine  and show no long term increase.  But  “It seems that caffeine has a stronger blood pressure increasing effect in men who are older than 70 or who are overweight.”  http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-pressure/expert-answers/blood-pressure/faq-20058   So as always when in doubt asked your doctor if you should avoid caffeinated beverages or try limiting your intake (no more then 2-12 oz. cups a day and avoid caffeine before exercise or other types of activities that normally raise it. )

The more coffee you drink  the less likely you are to sleep:
“The most marked effects of caffeine on sleep, even at levels equivalent to those of a single cup of coffee, have been well documented. They consist principally of prolonged sleep latency, shorter total sleep time, increases in light sleep and shortening of deep sleep time, as well as more frequent awakenings. Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep* is less affected. These effects depend not only on the amount of caffeine ingested at bedtime, but also on the amount of caffeine ingested over the whole day.” http://coffeeandhealth.org/topic-overview/caffeine-and-sleep/
