Central Florida Roadtrip – Sanford, Florida

Sanford is in Seminole County  set on the south shore of Lake Monroe, which is formed by the flowing waters of the St. John’s RIver—One of the few major rivers in the world that flows north.  It is county seat of Seminole county and has a pleasant downtown set in buildings that speak of its history in this area.

Historic Downtown Sanford Visitors Guide

But before there was Sanford the area was the site of Ft. Melon established in the 1830’s, named after Captain Charles Mellon who had been killed by the Seminole’–that the Fort was set her to protect the white settlers from.

By 1845 Florida had become a state and settlers began to come in with the movement of the Seminole further south.  But it wasn’t until Shelton Sanford, a former Minister for the US government to Belgium, purchased land here in  the post Civil War South.  He named the community after himself and when he had difficulty over employing the locals (he after all was a Yankee), he arranged for a group of Swedes to come to Florida to help set up the orange groves he planned to help finance his town’s success.  Freezes in the later years changed Sanford’s direction and by the early 1900’s it was a major producer of produce—but it’s name Celery City advised that Citrus was no longer it’s major crop,

Sanford FL is a great place to visit with lots of things to do!

In 1913 Seminole Country was cut out of Orange through the efforts of Forrest Lake—a several time mayor and a state representative for a few years as well.  Sanford became the county seat and has remained so ever since.

Shopping in Sanford

Sanford today has many restaurants, an art gallery, a museum with the town history outlined for all to see.  The historical post office is now the visitor’s center and  there’s also a book store with a nice vintage music section to name a few things that might interest you.

The Bars or at least a few of Key West

Hammerhead’s was described in the day as a locals bar with  “a softer image, more of a restaurant feel with jazz, so people can sit and enjoy some food and talk>  Key West Citizen.

I love the name of it’s larger–Lazy Lizard.  they even had one dedicated to Ernest Hemingway. and there was an old U-boat on their premises at 211 Duval   They had a local’s night every Wed. with free food and drink specials.

But alas Hammerhead’s is no more–the building is now the Home of Irish Kevin’s Bar and Restaurant.

Key West is an expensive town to live and work in and as we see lots of places new businesses often fail—I’m not sure how long they were open but they are gone now.

2020 Key West Travel – Duval Street – Carolines – Irish Kevins

When  Hooters came to Key West not all of the town were ready for it.  They already had a Planet Hollywood and a Hard Rock Cafe on Duval Street and many of the local business men were not eager for another corporate presence to rob Duval of it’s home town uniqueness —well that part was my feelings as well.  3 years before this invasion Key West Bight had block their attempt to open a restaurant at the airport.

A city commissioner at the time   : Carmen Turner said “Key West has, or used to have, a quirky, funky, small-town, kind of atmosphere.  I don’t think we’ve done a good job of managing that and maintaining it.”

But like Hammerhead’s—This too has passed and while there are still Hooter sites in mainland Florida—the one in Key West no longer exists.   It has been replaced by  Fogarty’s,

Key West Florida – Fogarty’s On Duval St

The Schooner Wharf bar was on Key West Bight

it set along the wharf and in 1992 the marina here held the largest fleet of vintage wooden boats in the southeastern United states.  It was established her in 1886 well before they had named the area the Key West Historic Seaport.

The Worthingtons, Paul (Cape Codand wife Evaena (Sweden), the couple who founded the bar came here on the Defiance (an 83′ schooner—it is it’s image that appeared on the Tee shirts and other merchandise sold the bar.    Infact the first bar they opened here was aboard the Diamant, a 120 ft. schooner in 1986.  By 1988 they had moved to to dry land.

The bar was not high tech or great architecture—there was a cement slab and a gravel parking lot.  while a diving board substituted for a bar top.  while the alcohol was in filing cabinets and beer in coolers.  This gradually devloped into a building wth the owner’s living upstairs and eventually a restaurant was added in 1996.

They added a stage which I remember listening to singers.  And the port held the Western Union which was one of the schooners we did cruises on.  It was heavenly

And now I know you’re waiting for the decree of the end—but n the Schooner Wharf is still there still selling food and booze and still making locals and tourists (as well as people like my husband and me that were there so often they called us temporary locals at the Green Parrot.

I had my first shot here this last week—they gave me  a new appointment.  I was in and out in about an hour or less—and was very impressed with the organization, as well as the helpfulness and the kindness of those that were running or assisting with a smooth process from start to finish.  I had a friend who took an elderly lady there and they took closer to 2 hrs but she insisted that her charge was a bit slower getting things completed etc. I would plan on longer as when I was there the lines were not very long—but still the organization should keep you moving along at a good rate.
As for the shot itself It left me with a bit of a bruised feeling in the arm for a couple of day and a feeling of being a bit tired but other than that I have had no other symptoms of any kind.

Let’s look at some TV that offers you history of all kinds:

The Smithsonian offers everything from trivia to real history

here’s some examples:

Private Lives of Monarchs:   Queen Victoria—this presents the queen as a much more interesting person who was much racier than later records showed—which they postulate were altered by later officials of the crown to ensure a spotless reputation—they mention her Scottish horse master and her Indian gentlemen as example of what might be more than everyone said it was.

Their Secrets Shows are also good—recently they did a feature on a ship wreck which is believed to be Blackbeard’s Ship

And the look into how he wrecked—if he wrecked or intentionally sank the ship and allot of interesting facts about the pirate’s history as well as info on his crew and more.

Also America in Color 1920 and 30’s (two shows) that take you thru the roaring days of probation and the crime that went along with it and the the Great Depression are excellent and take you thru the time with news reels and the like that have been converted to color.

Spuds for Splinters:  Potatoes can help to pull out splinters that are embedded too deep in your skin to extricate with tweezers.  Peel and wash a thumb-sized piece of a white or red potato and grate it (don’t use a sweet potato, it is too moist and sugary to attract liquid),.  Place the potato gratings into a piece of gauze bandage, wrap the gauze so the potato bits won’t fall out, and tape it to the area over the splinter.  Leave it for a few hours or overnight if possible, so the potato has time to dry.  As the potato dries, it draws bodily fluids to it,  That moisture carries the splinter to the surface so that it is easier to remove.

ST AUGUSTINE FLORIDA – THE OLDEST CITY in AMERICA (vlog)

Before the arrival of the first white settlers in the Goldenrod area, the last of the Indians had already been chased away by the Seminole Indian wars.  During the Reconstruction Period after the Civil War, Florida came under federal military rule.  By 1866 land in Florida was available under a more favorable federal enactment, the Homestead Act of 1862.

Goldenrod, Florida.

Goldenrod is noted for being the largest community in Central Florida that never became a city and was even splint in two when a new count was developed.   it is situated east of Winter Park to Dean Road (or possibly beyond and south of Red Bug Rd almost to SR 50.

The first settlers arrived in 1870, they raised cattle while harvesting the local lumber and planted citrus.  1875 is when the first and transaction was recorded and settlers came into the area on oxcarts along a path that followed (approximately) Tuskawilla Rd to the south side of Lake Jessup ad on to George Brantley’s.

By the 1890s there was a rail road across the area named the Orlando and Winter Park Railway.  It continued north to Oviedo.

The community was named for the masses of late summer and early fall flowers that covered the area.

By 1913 Seminole county was born and cut from Orange count and as I mentioned before it cut the community in two—but talks in the 1950s and 60s for incorporation to avoid annexation nothing ever came of it.

Today it still sits in central  Florida  a census-designated place (CDP) in Orange and Seminole counties in the U.S. state of Florida. The population was 12,039 at the 2010 census.

It has a chamber of commerce, its own historical society with a museum, a post office, garden club and civic center.

The most recent document discussing the name of Grassy Key is the U. S. Coast & Geodetic Survey letter for project HT 156 (1935-1936). The letter shows the name “Grassy Key” at Page 2 of Sheet No. 15. The letter states that “Local information states that the Key was named after an old settler and not because it was partially covered with grass.” A note to the letter states that Grassy Key had that name in an 1855 wrecker’s court record for the burning of the ship Concordia. However, I have a poor copy of the Concordia wreck letter and I believe it reads “Crawl Key.”

The town just “sprang” up at the river’s mouth, which at that time was the “intersection of Withlocoochee and Gulf.

It was named Port Inglis,  for a Captain John Inglis,  a Civil War hero whose family reportedly came from Glasglow, Scotland who skippered a ship from Spain to the river here.

It was later that a chemical plant was built 8 mile u the river from here which was originally named Blind Horse (don’t ask).  As the roadways developed and shipping declined and with it the Port of Inglis.  However Blind Horse, now Inglis continued to grow and is still a community to this day.

Heartbreak Hotel:  Kenansville, Florida

Not much happened in the area until Flagler built his Florida East Coast Railroad construction of a 90 mile route between New Smyrna and Okeechobee in 1911.   It passed % 1 1/2  and  $6,000     to build a brick school house with an auditorium to replace the small wood-frame school at Whittler.  The community adopted the new name to honor the home town of Flagler’s third wife,  Mary Lily Kenan of Kenanville, NC.

Flagler’s first wife died and his second wife Ida Alice Shurds, was committed for insanity  His affair with Mary and his legal manipulations  and some say bribes to the Florida legislature resulted in both a major scandal and a divorce eventually and a new marriage to Mary just days after the court ruling.  She remained married to him until his death in 1913.

This is the oldest Catholic Church in the city, of St. Augustine and the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine. The architecture of the Cathedral is inspired by the city’s Spanish roots.  The     cathedral walls are adorned with exquisite murals that depict scenes from the history of the Catholic Church in the development of the New World. There are also stained glass windows showing scenes from the life of Saint Augustine of Hippo, for whom the city was named.  Guided tours are offered throughout the day, and visitors are welcome to light candles for loved ones at any time. Mass is celebrated at 7:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday.

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

Valentines day really didn’t beat May day in ancient time:  What has vanished, from the celebration of May Day,  are the fertility rites that accompanied the raising of the Beltane May pole that once continued unabashed and unashamed throughout the entire month of May.  Marriage vows were considered to be in abeyance and enthusiastic promiscuity was the duty of every pious worshiper.

More on the Ciggie Tour

As I said last time we went thru the horror of 9/11 and on the other side try to adjust to a new world reality and we told Camel that yes we were still going….and started getting things ready for the trip and going to a different country—the first time I’d done that before…unless you count Canada when I lived in Michigan.

One change I found from 9/11 was the fact that the demand for pass ports seem to greatly decline—-we had been told to get a first pass port we needed to put everything in a few months early to be sure we got them prior to the trip.  So we did and had in our house all ready to go in less than 2 weeks….WoW…

We checked out what to do and I began to make reservations for myself—for while Mike would agree to the 6 days and 5 nights—he had a business and just couldn’t stay longer—and besides he was only going so I could make the trip so……

Royal Romances of The British Monarchy

The word chivalry is derived from the French cheval, a horse.  The word knight, which originally meant boy or servant, was particularly applied to a young man after he was admitted to the privileges of bearing arms.  This privilege was conferred on youths of family and fortune only, for the mass of the people were not furnished with arms.  The knight, then was a mounted warrior, a man of rank, or in the service and maintenance of some man of rank, generally possessing some independent means of support, but often relying mainly on gratitude of those whom he served for the supply of his wants, and often, no doubt, resorting to the means which power confers on its possessor.

Tampa Bay Hotel

Hungry for History – Henry Plant:19th Century Visionary, the Plant System and Savannah

Exotic Beauty that still Lives on in Tampa

Most people who think of coming to Florida think of the parks—in Tampa there’s Bush Gardens with its huge collection of animals, rides and adventures—–But Tampa has been around for years that the tourists often miss learning about.  So today I’ll tell you a bit about a place that might change your mind about the City on the Bay.

Tampa was just getting started during this time and Henry B. Plant put in some rail roads into the area and inspired by or wanting to out shine Flagler who developed the eat coast with a fantastic hotel in St Augustine and then on to Palm Beach where he developed the city and another fairy tale hotel as well as a home for himself and then on to build a railway, which is now the Over Seas Highway (with many bridges) from Island to Island in the Florida Keys and another of those fantastic hotel in Key West.

Plant was never to meet the amazing vision and accomplishments of Flagler—But he did build trains to Tampa which at the time was a small non-developed area setting rather isolated near the bay.  He built the train tracks in and connected the developing Ybor City and it’s cigar factories to the rest of Florida.    He went on to build this hotel which opened in January 1891 which was to become one of America’s premier winter resort.  Legend says that Plant sent a telegram to invite Flagler to his new hotel in Tampa.  Flager’s reply also by telegram:  “Where’s Tampa”.

The final hotel was huge being a quarter-mile in length and reportedly having 500 guest rooms.  There was a domed dining room, a solarium even a galleried entry rotunda.  It was the height of sophistication with telephone service in each room.  .  There were tennis courts, a golf course and even quail shooting on the grounds.

If you look at the picture above you will see the building that John A. Wood built that look of Turkish or Moorish origins—unlike anything else you see in the country—even in our current age.   In 1898 during the Spanish American Teddy Roosevelt stayed here prior to his company departing to Cuba and his Rough Riders were often seen carrying out maneuvers and the like on the grounds of the hotel

Today the hotel is part of the University of Tampa—but happily the original building stands all it classic lines—a reminder of its beautiful and original beginnings—today much of it holds college designated inside space..  But the building still holds a museum that shows you what the hotel once was.

Which includes

Former Writing and Reading rooms (a room used by men only for news paper reading) restored with original furnishings,  with a video that introduces you to the hotel’s history.

Spanish American War Room

Tells the story of the hotel’s part in the war (at that time Tampa was the city nearest Cuba with bot rail and port.).

Parlor Suite

This room at various times was occupied by Sarah Bernhardt,, Babe Ruth and Thomas Edison to name a few—they were said to enjoy luxurious yet quiet elegance.

The remander of the rooms show a variety of the places like the hotel’s gardens and tries to reproduce the life in that time.  There are various special exhibition during the year and an annual Victorian Christmas Stroll to assist with this.

Have been trying to get signed up for the vaccine—two of my friends have had both shots and several more are signed up to get injections net week—but I never hear back from anyone and I was on one site for an hour and 15 min before they finally gave away all the appointments for the next weeks but none could be spared to me—-It’s just not my week I guess…..Hope you’re getting all set for ending this mess for you at least….GOOD LUCK

But is your favorite drippy romance—I like Notting Hill where Hugh Grant falls in love with a very neurotic movie star played by Julia Roberts a movie start who comes and goes from his life—it’s kinda reversal on the roles—With Grant being love struck—a usually more feminine sentiment and Roberts playing the commitment shy more male inconsistencies.  But it still remains the one I watch when I get down and out.

History of Mayport and Jacksonville, FL

Jacksonville:  With so much known about how and why Jacksonville was named, the tantalizing fact is that so far no record has been found of the exact date in June 1822 when the city officially came into being.  Probably the events were spread over number of days.   Every city mus have a birthday, however, so Jacksonville has selected June 15, the date when the settlers petitioned Congress for recognition as a point of entry.  Jacksonville is the county seat of Duval Co.

About 1590 the Spanish mission San Juan del Puerto (St. John of the harbor). was established and ultimately gave its name in shortened form, to the river.

For a time in the mid-1700’s, both San Mateo and San Juan were shown on the same Florida maps as two names for one river.

It was during the British period in Florida (20 years) 1763-1783, that San Juan finally became St. John’s and since has remained the same, except for dropping of the apostrophe.

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour

Winter Park was first settled by David Mizell of Alachua Co. in 1836.  There is said to have been a town here called Lakeview, founded in 1858 and rechristened Osceola in 1870.  In 1882 Loring A. Chase and Oliver E. Chapman laid out a new 600 acre town site very much along the lines of New England towns, where they had come from and gave the town its present name because of its veritable park atmosphere in the Winter.  It is one of Orlando’s older, more affluent suburbs.

Last time I told you that  we were interrupted by one last thing—and that was a monumental terror—a disgrace to the race.

September 11 Attacks

Yes the US Capital was attached and much was destroyed.  I was on the phone when the second tower was hit by a plane and our conversation moved move the business category we had been discussing to the obvious attack (before it was hit by some crazy pilot—the Empire State Building was year prior to this—we were both shook and he told to stay on the line with him so we could list to the incoming reports together —  I worked out of my home—some of us started that practice much earlier than others—but back then while that was happened normal work was suspended and as the attacks continued my office shut down and sent everyone home anyway.

After that all airline travel was shut down—several friends had to rent cars and drive back t Florida as the choice of flight was no longer an option.  The world was not ever gonna be quite normal again and  we all were traumatized and shell shocked.

Shortly after this the company setting up the trip for us called and surveyed all of us asking if we still wished to go.  I told them yes and they advised they’d let us know if the trip was going to continue as planned in June of 2002.

to name one of several.  Pisces which has a large dine out side patio area including a large outside bar set up and with nice views of the lake.

Or you can drive about:

The Orthodox Influence of the Monk In Czarist Russia

Like many of you out there I’m aware of the story of the last Czar of Russian and how greatly he was influenced by the Monk Rasputin-–and how this helped to seal the end of  the monarchy in Russia.

But what I didn’t realize just how important these monks were to the Russian Crown over the years.  The Russian Orthodox Church was the national religion.  And the several of these  monks, particularly those with charisma and  miracle abilities, were very powerful–even Ivan IV (The Terrible) was open to their advise and directions.  And this was not changed even in later and more modern thinking Czars as as we are aware this was obviously a great deal to do with the fall of the last Czar and his family.

Things are looking up and though the process isn’t as fast as we would like—but we need patience and to continue wearing those masks, social distancing and don’t forgot to wash your hands—-stay in for a bit longer—this stuff is real and it CAN kill you—-and nobody needs that —-and it’s not a fun thing to go thru even if you do survive—so treat yourself to life and health—-you’ll be glad you did.

This is a primary reason why my blog is what it is why now—giving you fun and alternatives and  virtual places to go, where you shouldn’t find any viral infections if you stay home and distance your self and all that good stuff. while you’re partaking of them.

I hope that you all are hanging in there and keeping sane (or as sane as your character tolerates—-remember this will make us stronger—and think how happy we will be when we’re allowed out again…..that will be glorious now won’t it?!!

Back to the Cigarette Travel Memories

So in this episode:  Well as we started working on the trip my hubby decided he didn’t want to go and suggested that I invite my sister.  He’d still supply the bucks and we could split the $400 cash payment (I said $450 before but reviewing the paper work I’ve located (I know I never throw any paperwork away) it was $400).  My sister has also long been interested in England–in fact she went there from the college she was getting her Masters at as an exchange and studied at University of London for a term.

So we started working on that idea—-BUT it rapidly fell apart when we found that it was my husband’s membership and he would have to go—and he could take one adult (21 years of age or older) he wished to—but that it was mandatory that he be one of the 2 person going or I couldn’t go and sorrily my sis was totally out…

So we revamped and my husband known how much I wanted to go bit the bullet and agreed to accompany me and so we signed up and got the deposits paid and then went on to get our passports—-amazingly the drug stores at that time we’re the easiest and fastest place to get them done for a minor payment.  And so we thought we had everything under control—-but alas the worst event of all was to come up about 6 months before our trip with a serious threat.

The Chalice Well

Glastonbury

We visited Glastonbury on the trip that I drove in the UK and stayed in a bed and breakfast above a restaurant (where we got our breakfasts in the morning) from which you could see the parking area for Glastonbury Abbey—where I parked after the abbey closed—-when parking was free—had to set the car up along a roadway during the day.

We had some lovely time wandering about the town on our own and plenty of time to see the town (we also drove on to Stonehenge from here as well as visiting Salisbury coming back here for the night).    One of my favorite part of that visit of the town, with its ancient Abbey ruins (can you guess who was responsible for that) with it’s disputed claim to the burial site Of Arthur and his queen—I’m one of the doubter on that.  The Tor is fantastic as well—some claim it is the original island of Avalon (the area was once for the most part underwater.)   Oh but back to my favorite part—the Chalice Gardens and Well.

The well here is legendary for never failing (going dry) even in the middle of droughts.  It might be noted that the Blood Well (the Chalice Well)  and the White Well—also on site are actually springs and they have sources from considerably different area—the Chalice well has a considerable iron content and does appear red from this mineral  The White Well has chalk from its origins making the water look milky at time.

It’s a considerable—for Yanks at least–walk from town to the entrance on the left of Chilkwell Street,.  So I recommend you chexk the shuttle to the entrance  You Enter on a cobblestone path and thru an archway of plants—It is a place dedicated to peaceful contemplation and quiet thought and visitors are requested to respect this when they move about the garden area.

The Yew trees on the site are often seen on church grounds actually go back to pre-Christian Druids—in fact the remains of a Yew tree found on the property near the present well in 1961 was estimated to be 1,800 years old  and at least two surviving Yew Trees are found North east of the town on what is thought to have been a possible ceremonial entrance to the Tor—there are two surviving yews of ancient origins.  There are also 3 ancient thorn tress in the garden which legend has it are related to Joseph of Armathea’s visit to the area.

The water is pure and unpolluted and is tested regularly.  You can purchase containers to collect the water at the entry of the gardens.

Once you leave here you  can walk further from the entrance—-turn left on Wellhouse Lane and then right and take the Footpath to the Tor (or you can take the shuttle to the Tor rather than back downtown.  Also along the lane is the White Spring

‘The end of the beginning.’ The dark winter is here and Americans see no end

Just you and me

So is life treating you any better than last time we “talked”—I’d ask if it could get worse, but I have learned not to ask that as it it too much tempting fate–and fate so enjoys trampling on our dreams, kicking our hearts and making mayhem of the plans we have so proudly assembled and worked on facilitating, discussed, dreamed of and now more recently mourned–with only a faint hope that we will sometime return to what passes for a normal life and some enjoyment of it again.

Between my part time remote job and this blog  I am able to keep active and as sane as one can expect considering everything.  I am hopeful that this blog helps my reader stay safe and escape from the four walls that bind—I started this with the intent of getting you all out away from TV, computer whatever and I have managed to go from that to attempting to keep you inside and on the computer—last I heard Covid hasn’t been found to be transmittable on the internet.  Do you think that if we return to what we once considered normal that we will be able to return to THE WAY WE WERE????.  That things that made us happy then and the plans that we made and the changes we hoped for will any longer work for us?

I know that I so hope to return to public—but will have to make adjustments from what I have now.  I will so love to breather without fogging my gasses.  But I understand that my feelings of seclusion have come to support my feelings of being safe and secure for my future.  It may take awhile for me to get use to going out more than once a week.  I know my cats will be relieved to have the house back again for extended periods, but they will miss their extra treats.

What’s your thought on all this?

Come on—let me know please
