Science fiction is trying to find alternative ways of looking at realities. Iain Banks

Haven’t had a dog of the day lately—but this one was just so friendly and fluffy that I had to put in him my Blog—I met him hanging with his lovely owner at Hidden Treasure Bar and Grill http://hiddentreasurerestaurants.com/ on Saturday.  He is such a sweetie.

Also today we’re still on Fantasy and today I look at what fantasy is and all its nuances with fiction and like that and those who read me all the time know that there is no end to where I might wander…my mind is full blown gypsy I’m afraid.

Of course I’m gonna start with my getting through DROUGHTLANDER which means a few items on my favorite show.

We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality.                                                                                                                    Iris Murdoch

PS all the pictures are from Stockbridge a village in Edinburgh which is the large city in Scotland.

Of course we’re doing duty to make DROUGHTLANDER less dreary:

First:  Read all the updates:  Here’s one to get you started:

Second:  Count the thing, people and places—which means rewatching all of it over a time or two–that you liked Season 2–Here’s some ideas.

And Finally (or three which ever you prefer):  Plan a work out—read all you can about Sam’s—-and of course I have a starting article:

Or you can just drink heavily like Claire:

I had read tons of science fiction. I was fascinated by other worlds, other environments. For me, it was fantasy, but it was not fantasy in the sense of pure escapism. James Cameron

So all this month we’ve been dealing with fantasy….but exactly what is fantasy?

This bit from Wikipedi suits my ideas of it well:  In popular culture, the fantasy genre is predominantly of the medievalist form. In its broadest sense, however, fantasy comprises works by many writers, artists, filmmakers, and musicians from ancient myths and legends to many recent and popular works.

And while we’re at it lets look at fiction:

a. The category of literature, drama, film, or other creative work whose content is imagined and is not necessarily based on fact.
b. Works in this category: the fiction of Virginia Woolf.
c. A work within this category: the shorter fictions of Faulkner
So what’s the difference?
The main difference between fantasy and other types of fiction, such as science fiction, is that fantasy usually involves a mystical base, i.e. magical, mythical or supernatural, imagined worlds, while science fiction makes use of an analytical, scientific discourse and focuses on technology.

So fantasy involves a mythical base (occurring in or characteristic of myths or folk tales: )
So this takes in things like Fairy tales and TV shows like Once Upon A Time
while Law & Order would be fiction.
But what about such shows as
The Blacklist, is the master criminal realistic enough to be fiction  or does the presences of this ultimate criminal come under mythical or Mafia folk tales?
Or it’s magical…So in Excaliber the tales of Arthur and the Round Tale is Fantasy….but on the other hand King Arthur with Clive Owens (2004) is fictional–but wait it involves that mythical being (they still haven’t established whether his Once and Future ship ever even existed) even though it’s presented in a very logical and historical way—so obviously there are points where it’s hard to tell.

We’ve heard the expression that someone lives in a  “fantasy world”
fantasy worldsomething existing solely in the imagination (but often mistaken for reality)
Many of us have done it…for a short periods if we’re lucky or forever if we’re luckier/If you live it and accept it forever then when does it go from fantasy to your actual reality?—sometimes we’ve become so taken with an idea, a person, a lover that we live with the perception and that idea, person, lover whatever may become a fictional —-no a fantasy character—someone or thing of legendary statue, a magical end to all our ills and a prince of fairy status that will rescue us from the dreary life, job, home, family what ever that we do not have the where-with-all to deal with and so we except a fantasy to replace what we can’t deal or don’t want to deal with.
We join a cult, we take a job that makes no sense—we fall in love with a man or woman who may at best just play with our emotions—or maybe is living in their own fantasy–or at worst uses us for their own gains whether they be for financial or just physical gain or even to meet some fantastical goal or place of their own.

FANTASY is something that may be in the eye of the beholder.  Some think that love is just that.  Others find religion to be in that realm,  While some love people like Trump or Bill Clinton others feel they are at best fictional or at worst fantastical evil monsters or randy satyrs.
In the olden days Kings and Queens were attributed with mythical and magic powers—Edward the Confessor was actually canonized.  I am sure that this was actually encouraged by the particular monarch or at least his advisors and PR people—for you are less likely to confront a legend or a saint than you are someone who could just have easily been born to the peasant next door and lived a dreary life like the rest of us.  And please note that I am not in anyway saying Edward didn’t deserve to be a Saint, just that it seems to be in line with Kingly Personages being mythical and magic.
In our day and age politicians aren’t expected to have such magical powers or maybe we’ve just lost some of the rosy glow that previous and less cynical personage that came before us had, maybe they—or rather those that lived so much better than they—had an easier time to convince superstitious peasants who lived very small lives in very limited areas than those that lived in luxury must have been invested with magic to be part of such luxury and glamour.
I get so tired of people saying, ‘Oh, you only make fantasy films and this and that’, and I’m like, ‘Well no, fantasy is reality’, that’s what Lewis Carroll showed in his work. Tim Burton
