Maggie (Liz Taylor) is married to a man who has always been a jock–Paul Newman—who talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk–in this play and now movie by Truman Capote–the man who is credited by many as greatly contributing to introducing the Gay community to Key West—we look at a family that has more than their share of issues—the patriarch is dying—though the doctor differs on that depending on whom he’s talking to.  He is a wealthy man who is over powering and often hateful,  but his wealth has kept his one son and his preggie wife (like their 3rd or 4th on the way?) stay close by in hopes of pushing the father’s favorite Newman and his childless wife Liz out of the line of inheritance…..and the reason the wife is childless (and greatly sexually frustrated and hopelessly in love with her errant husband—and as it is noted on some ads–Maggie is the cat)  is that that to quote Newman she’s in love with someone that doesn’t love her—and without saying outright the reason for this is that Newman’s love is for another gender, especially an old friend that he had developed a relationship with –who has died by his own hand.  He copes with this by drinking to excess.  Put those people together, add Big Momma, who is brash and who also favors Newman’s character, and then for sheer aggravation the badly behaved and noisy children of the one sibling and you have a chaos that makes for a raw drama that hopefully doesn’t remind you too much of your own family’s get together.

Douglas Adams

We are stuck with technology when what we really want is just stuff that works.

Douglas Adams

3/11/52

Does anyone but me remember this man who wrote  “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy *  in 1979—it was actually a BBC radio series in 1978—but I didn’t hear about it till the book**.

He created the story of a mild-mannered Arthur Dent who travels through space with a friend Ford Prefect after the Earth is destroyed by a crew that is building an intergalactic highway.  It is noted for wit and great character names *** and gives us the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything else:  42. ^

There were more books including:  The Restaurant at the End of the Universe^^ and So Long and Thanks for all the Fish*, a hit TV show and stage shows  Adams described his success as being unexpected like “having an orgasm without the foreplay.”

He was working out at a gym on 5/11/2001 when he had a heart attack and passed on at age 49 (near his home in Santa Barbara.  He was creamated.

Anchor Inn

Park Street

Southwark

London

The current building, The SNchor, dates back to the 18th c and comes complete with minstrel’s gallery, old oak beams and cubby holes where escapees from the Clink could hide or where smugglers might stash their contraband, desperate to avoid the duties due at Custom House

The Anchor is the sole survivor of the riverside inns taht existed here in Shakespeare’s time and may have been visited by the playwright himself whose Globe Theatre was just three or four minutes walk away.  Indeed, the Anchor was often full of actors, although by the 18th c it was a hangout for river-pirates and smugglers.  When a huge oak beam was removed during the early 19th c the workmen fond a collection of intricately designed hiding places for contraband.

Oak Ridge Cemetery

North Lee Avenue and Livingston Street
Arcadia, Florida
DeSoto County

This site is located in the Southwest region of the state.

To reach the Oak Ridge Cemetery, travel north on Lee Avenue from SR 70 in Arcadia. The entrance to the cemetery is at the intersection of Lee Avenue and Livingston Street.

In the process of training Royal Air Force cadets to fly at the Riddle schools in Arcadia and Clewiston, twenty-three men were killed. Of that number, two died at Carlstrom Field in Arcadia and the remainder while at the Riddle Field site near Clewiston. These young men, with their instructor John Paul Riddle,    are now buried in a specially designated area of the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia. Located in the southwest area of the cemetery, these graves are set off by a 30’ x 100’ raised curb and the presence of the British Union Jack on a pole nearby.

The Arcadia Rotary Club conducts annual commemorative services on Memorial Day to honor these brave men and their instructor

Doc Hollywood [VHS]

I watched it free on Ovation yesterday

At first glance, this 1991 comedy looks like another formulaic fluff-piece with a standard fish-out-of-water scenario–in this case a hotshot young doctor (Michael J. Fox) whose cross-country drive to become a Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon is interrupted when he crashes in the rural hamlet of Grady, South Carolina. But as Fox’s character is urged by the folksy locals to stay–an offer made tempting by his romance with a law student (Julie Warner)–this unassuming little movie just gets better and better thanks to a sharp script and a splendid supporting cast. Well, okay … maybe Woody Harrelson and Bridget Fonda aren’t used to the fullest of their abilities, but for the most part this is a charming and surprisingly intelligent comedy that’s good enough to compare favorably to My Cousin Vinny, a film with which it shares much in common. Fox has all the right moves to make his character both bullish and ultimately agreeable, and Julie Warner’s performance may leave you wondering why this fine actress didn’t immediately rise to stardom. –Jeff Shannon

Sugarloaf Key FL Bat Tower04.jpg

Bat Tower

In an effort to control mosquitoes in the Keys, this strange structure was built to house “skeeter eating” bats.  The project was abandoned when not enough bats were attracted to the 35′ tall oddity.  A historical marker is all that remains of the bat house.”

Charlie Carlson

Strange Florida

the unexplained and unusual.

This statement that the historical marker is all that remains was incorrect when the book was written in 1997—-bu it turned out to be the truth as the tower which had stood  since 1929 was destroyed by a hurricane in 2017—they were just 20 years too early—but the marker is along the main road the the Bat tower was further back and off the tourist beaten path–but then few have ever described me as a tourist  I in fact have a piece of wood that was blown off the tower years ago—a friend of mine that was a carpenter picked it up and made me a coat rack of it.

That they put bats in the tower but they soon deserted it.

That they tried to attract local bats to the tower but they never came

And my favorite

They bats were placed or came or both to the tower

and the mosquitoes ate them.

Rere les passes dels templers: La veritable història de l'ordre del Temple en terres catalanes (Catalan Edition) by [Ramon Sarobe]
 Templers

http://www.medievalwarfare.info/templars.htm

The history of the Order in the East is extremely hazy in this period and in fact one of their earliest recorded actions appears to have been a humiliating defeat.   During a campaign of Fulk in Gilead , Runciman relates, ‘a band of Moslems managed to cross the Jordan close to its junction with the Dead Sea and to raid Judea, where thy lured to its destruction by the tactics of feigned retreat a company of Templer knights sent against them.

https://books.google.com/books?id=hzx_2Xaa5MkC&pg=PA53&lpg=PA53&dq=campaign+of+Fulk+in+Gilead&source=bl&ots=WLk-9w0fqi&sig=ACfU3U0utoVyuPITLFf8wGGOiCIiGmZRDg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiz9JbsvpPpAhVHJt8KHW0cAskQ6AEwAHoECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=campaign%20of%20Fulk%20in%20Gilead&f=false

It was indeed some time before the Templers and other knights present in the Holy Land developed taticts to counteract those of the Moslems and the Seljuk Turks who each employed means of warfare different from those to which European knights had been accustomed.

https://www.history.com/news/knights-templar-facts-crusades-wealth

The Templers made good use of these early experiences and later became the military strategists of the kings and crusaders who fought for the Holy Land.
