REMEMBERING A LITTLE GIANT

Yesterday was a house bound day but I did get caught up. Weather went from hot (yesterday) to chilly with the new front that brought rain and storms 3/4 of the day(yesterday). Lots of noise here as they are replacing sidewalk areas that are damaged etc on my street today.

Last week a film giant died. I remember him mostly from all those old movies I use to watch late night and more recently on AMC.

“Mickey Rooney was born Joe Yule Jr. in…1920 in Brooklyn, New York. He first took the stage as a toddler in his parents’ vaudeville act…at 17 months old…his first film appearance was in 1926. The following year, he played the lead character in…short film…. (next) A Family Affair, the film that introduced the country to Andy Hardy, the popular all-American teenager…character appeared in nearly 20 films and helped make Rooney the top star…in 1939, 1940 and 1941. Rooney also…in Boys Town…. In 1938, he was awarded a juvenile Academy Award.

“…Rooney also appeared in a string of musicals, including Babes in Arms (1939)… Strike up the Band (1940), Babes on Broadway (1941), and Girl Crazy (1943). …he also appeared… in…National Velvet (1944). Rooney …helped to entertain the troops and worked on the American Armed Forces Network….returned to Hollywood…in Love Laughs at Andy Hardy (1946), …Robert Taylor film…Killer McCoy (1947) and …Words and Music (1948).. also… Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)…in the dramatic role…in Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962). 1979 film The Black Stallion…turned to the stage in 1979 in Sugar Babies …nominated for a Tony Award….he also portrayed the Wizard in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz…

“Rooney appeared in four television series’: The Mickey Rooney Show (1954-1955)…1964 …Mickey, One of the Boys in 1982…and the Adventures of the Black Stallion from 1990-1993. In 1981, Rooney won an Emmy Award for his portrayal of…Bill…More recently …in …Night at the Museum (2006) … and The Muppets (2011)….” http://mickeyrooney.com/index2.html#news

BE THE STAR OF YOUR OWN LIFE

AN OVER THREE THOUSAND YEAR OLD CELEBRATION BEGINS

Yesterday was dentist–just cleaning–and then a lunch with a close friend and then shopping at Winn Dixie (be still my heart). No work except Blog. But back to it today.

TODAY IS TAX DAY–GET THOSE FORMS IN, but though there have been taxes forever that’s not what we’re talking about (obviously as I put a celebration and if you have to pay it certainly isn’t).

Today is the first day of Passover:
“Passover, or Pesach…( listen), …is an important biblically derived Jewish festival. The Jewish people celebrate Passover as a commemoration of their liberation over 3,300 years ago by God from slavery in ancient Egypt…” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passover “G‑d saw the people’s distress and sent Moses to Pharaoh with a message: “Send forth My people, so that they may serve Me.” But despite numerous warnings, Pharaoh refused to heed G‑d’s command. G‑d then sent upon Egypt ten devastating plagues, afflicting them and destroying everything from their livestock to their crops.

At the stroke of midnight… G‑d visited the last of the ten plagues on the Egyptians, killing all their firstborn. While doing so, G‑d spared the Children of Israel, “passing over” their homes—hence the name of the holiday.” http://www.chabad.org/holidays/passover/pesach_cdo/aid/871715/jewish/What-Is-Passover.htm

If you’re really interested in the Jewish celebration I suggest this site which has everything Passover http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2014/04/passover-the-jewish-holiday-for-gentiles/360608/

The Christian Church’s Easter Celebration is kinda related to all this: “What does it mean to say that Easter is related to Passover in an “historical (way)…”? In the year of His Death, Christ celebrated the Last Supper on the first day of Passover (Holy Thursday). His Crucifixion occurred on the second day (Good Friday) at the hour when the lambs were slaughtered in the Temple…” Thus, historically, Christ’s Death (and therefore His Resurrection) are related in time to the celebration of Passover.”

TODAY IT’S PINK MOONS, LOTS OF LAUGH AND FAIR WAGES WHAT A MONDAY

WE’RE BACK to Monday. I met a girlfriend at a new Venue on Friday and we just talked and enjoyed the lake view. Saturday was Maitland Art Festival and a Cajun Lunch. Sunday not so fun, mopping floors, changing sheets and working on book (writing one).

TODAY I’m not doing collectibles–just a little break.

First tonight is a full pink moon and eclipse. So does the moon turn pink? No it evidentally gets it name from “…native tribes of eastern North America called the first full moon of spring the Pink Moon…http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/technology/2012/04/pink-moon-rising/ The name actually comes from “…the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring,” (Farmers Almanac). How they went from flowers to moon I am not sure.

As to the Eclipse: “…the “star” near the…full moon is…Mars, which comes closest to Earth for the year on April 14…(the) eclipse takes place, and indeed, as seen from around the world, all night long. North America is in a good place to see this eclipse…”http://earthsky.org/tonight So you might want to step outside for a look tonight.

It’s Moment of Laughter Day So please giggle, chuckle and laugh as much as possible.

Finally I saw an ad from Alaffia proclaiming their brand of body care products as being Fair Trade and that much of the products aren’t.

I decided to look into this. “The word “Alaffia” is a West African greeting..Alaffia means a state of… well being. Alaffia makes…skin care,..soaps, and hair care out of shea butter and other…essential oils. Their mission is to “advance gender equality and alleviate poverty…Tchala founded the company in honor of his mother and other women… His goal is to empower women…receive fair trade..family income is often as low as $200 USD per year…”http://harvestmarket.wordpress.com/2011/10/28/alaffia-changing-the-world-one-company-at-a-time/

However Fair Trade itself has had some issues: “The evidence available suggests that little of the extra money paid by consumers actually reaches the farmers. The Fairtrade Foundation does not monitor how much more money retailers charge…for goods. Furthermore, retailers almost never sell identical Fairtrade and non-Fairtrade lines side by side… so it is rarely possible to determine how much extra is charged…”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_trade_debate

As to this particular company? I was not able to find a review or article that did not involve someone selling their products so the verdict is still out as far as my blog is concerned.

Never, never stop thinking.

SHAKESPEARE A ROUGH MAGIC OR A GROUP EFFORT

Hello Friday. Meeting last night with one of my business Meet Up Groups http://www.meetup.com/. It was very informative and the networking great. Working on plans for weekend Blues or Art? There’s the rub.

Friday, on this blog at least, means an update on what I’m reading. The book–just finished–INTERRED WITH THEIR BONES by Jennifer Lee Carrell (http://www.jenniferleecarrell.com/About%20Jennifer%20Lee%20Carrell.html ).

On the eve of the Globe’s production of Hamlet, Shakespeare scholar and theater director Kate Stanley’s eccentric mentor, Harvard Professor Roz Howard, gives her a mysterious box, claiming to have made a groundbreaking discovery. But before she can reveal it to Kate, the Globe burns to the ground and Roz is found dead, murdered precisely in the manner of Hamlet’s father. Inside the box Kate finds the first piece in a Shakespearean puzzle, setting her on a deadly, high-stakes treasure hunt.

This is the first book of Carrell’s series with Kate Stanley and was a best seller. The characters globe trot looking for the real Shakespeare, a lost play and letters from a mad women. A great, brilliant read. I hope she hurries up with the third book she’s working on.

“Shakespeare was born and brought up in Stratford-upon-Avon. Between 1585 and 1592…he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company Men… He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613 at age 49…he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare’s private life survive…there has been considerable speculation about…his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.
Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613…Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, and Macbeth…” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Shakespeare

So like the mummies yesterday I don’t think many of us have any original Folios (except a few of the characters in Carrell’s books) but there must be something Shakespeare out there–I have a few books but nothing for sale.

Shakespeare Renaissance Themed Souvenir Collectors Shot Glass Blue …$8 (interesting)

IN THIS CASE SKIN DEEP TAKES ON A WHOLE NEW MEANING
Thurs already?! Worked all day, then off for a Met Up at a sports bar to have dinner—burger & salad–before you say good girl–they were out of onion rings and only had sweet potato fries (gag). Was a fun evening and I meet some nice people. I may start up my own group.

In all the assorted emails I got one this morning that I really found interesting. It was a summary of news reports. But the one that caught my eye: “Wigs, jewelry and a horrifying toothache are among the things a CT scan of a mummy can reveal” Seems like they’ve started doing CT scans on mummies with some bizarre results. PRI.org Global Scan editors@pri.org via cmail1.com Now that sounds interesting so went on to the Telegraph site.

…Ancient Egyptian lady…the intimate details of Tamut, a singer in a temple in Luxor, will be displayed for the first time..groundbreaking exhibition at the British Museum….the latest technology to scan Tamut’s mummified body…and discovered…new information, including that she suffered from furred arteries and may have died of a heart attack or a stroke.” while her painted grave wrappings show her as young with long hair “archeologists found she was probably around 40 years old, with a cropped urchin-like hair cut and was suffering the effects of a poor diet.”

“Rsearchers also made a…gruesome discovery…a scan of an(another)…mummy revealed a spatula had been left lodged in its skull after being used to scoop out its brains. The body of the man…is believed to have been mummified around 600 BC. Tamut and the man are among eight mummies that were examined with…CT scanners that produce high resolution data that can be turned into 3D images…originally designed to make cars.

WHAT WE DO FOR LOVE OR THE ABILITY TO MAKE IT

It was a great thing to see the sunny day after yesterday’s all day rains. Made being in the house easier, didn’t really want to go out in it.

After doing (blush again) Bond yesterday and am watching Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford in Devil’s Own ( http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi4130184217/ ) decided we’d explore the world of love or at least the lengths we go to make it (dare I say sex?).

“Over the centuries frustrated humans have been willing to try almost anything to restore FLAGGING amorous FEELINGS.” The Healthy Edge 2/14 p.19 In Peru they used frog juice (think pureed creatures–ugh) to boost strength and increase desire. Even Icons weren’t spared–Powdered gecko was once considered an aphrodisiac. Foods that resembled certain organs like cucumbers, figs, bananas as well as those of other organs: oysters and mussels have been used in other cultures as aphrodisiacs. The ancient Hindu text on sex The Kama Sutra ( http://www.sacred-texts.com/sex/kama/ ) suggests ram testicle, peacock bone and monkey dung (all of which really turn me on).

others include
Foods and herbs which have been claimed to be aphrodisiacs:
Ambergris
Tiger penis
Deer penis and antlers (in Taiwan and China)
Epimedium grandiflorum (Horny Goat Weed)
Ginkgo biloba
Ginseng
Salamander Brandy
Spanish fly (cantharidin)
Watermelon Citrulline is a weak nitric oxide stimulator.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphrodisiac
to name just a few.

“Can certain foods, drugs and scents really increase sexual desire? Millions of people swear they can, but the scientific evidence is still in question.” http://science.howstuffworks.com/aphrodisiac.htm

I don’t have any loveable collectibles but…maybe that old cupid Google does

3 Vintage Photos “Sexy Pose” Photography (pose is a fully dressed girl(s) leaning against a naked tree with arms folded behind head) $8

1960’s pulp fiction paperback, When She Was Bad $64 (Other titles from $35)

NEARLY NUDE TO SEXILY DRESSED WOMEN ON POSTERS ($74 PAPER TO $24 for tin–several) most feature car themes.

Do you notice these are almost all male orientated items?

How about a Brad Pitt shower curtain $68

CHRIS HEMSWORTH (THOR) AUTHENTIC SIGNED 8X10 AUTOGRAPH PHOTO $99

or Signed picture Gerard Butler $401

SO I HOPE YOU’RE UP FOR YOUR DAY

AND ALL THE HELP YOU’LL NEED IS LOVE.

THIS 7 IS ONLY LUCKY FOR IT’S HOLDER AND THE LADIES HE FAVORS

GOOD morning. Did I tell you it’s color outside the lines month? ( https://www.facebook.com/toledosusy‎ )

Yesterday was a work day, no wandering free. Bummer. Maybe I should retire—wait I already have….Watching James Bond this morning–back in the day when he was sexy and handsome–hate the new ugly one.

Hey what about doing (blush) 007 today? I got into the Bond thing when a girlfriend in college (100 years ago) loaned me a book. (only one Bond, then–Sean). I hadn’t seen the movies but I consumed the books as soon as I could get my hands on them and was a total convert to OO. By the way there’s a all about Bond official site http://www.007.com/characters/the-bonds/

“The James Bond series focuses on a fictional character created in 1953 by writer Ian Fleming, who featured him in twelve novels and two short-story collections. Since Fleming’s death in 1964 seven other authors have written authorized Bond novels or novelizations… ” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Bond

Bond book bio: http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0000007/bio

In the course of 23 movies…James Bond has been incarnated by six different actors. While the roles of other world-saving supermen—from Batman to the Hulk to Superman himself—have been filled by a variety of mortals, those heroes are ciphers. It barely matters who plays Batman: The thrill is in the gadgets, the atmosphere, the supervillains…. James Bond is not a “realistic” character;…. But he is a compelling and distinct one. With the right leading man, Bond is just human enough to be believable—and yet sufficiently aloof and suave to appear mostly untroubled by the world’s real worries…just the right amount of escapism. The best fantasies…those that appear not entirely unattainable. http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/the_completist/2012/11/best_james_bond_movies_books_actors_and_girls_the_entire_007_oeuvre_reviewed.html
which Bond do you like best?

I have nothing Bond that I can think of.

Google to the rescue who’s the most valuable Bond?

Exclusive 5″ Walther Ppk Signed George Lazenby (portrayed James Bond in the 1969 On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) $325

(less money but it’s for a picture vs gun) Timothy Dalton James Bond Autographed Signed 8×10 Photo Authentic …$300

James Bond Die Another Day Pierce Brosnan Hand Signed poster …$619

Signed Roger Moore “for Your Eyes Only” James Bond Movie Poster …$816

Daniel Craig Sky Fall Autographed Display $1,400

and NUMBER 1 IS OF COURSE: DR. NO SEAN CONNERY 1962 Poster $13,750.

and if you want them all: 75 Signed 007 Autographs all JAMES BOND, some villians and Bond girls: $3,975.

SO you can go save the world and be sexy too.

NO BODY DOES IT BETTER THAN SEAN, BUT I’D RATHER DO IT WITH PIERCE.

A KISS OF UNUSUAL PRESENCE

Good Monday to you. Was busy all weekend. Friday the usual girls’ thing. Sat a birthday party—you go Chris and Sunday got my hair done and had a nice lunch on a great street–by the way Mattie (my picture of the day) worked at the restaurant and agreed to let me feature her—isn’t she beautiful! Great flower.

In my daily inventory of the new jewelry I bought at the last sale I came across a small chain with a candy kiss shape–it’s not actually a signed Hershey but we all know the shape, which got me thinking why do they call that particular candy-shape a “kiss”. So off we go again.

I went to the source: “HERSHEY’S KISSES were first introduced in 1907. It’s not known exactly how they received their name, but a popular theory is that the candy was named for the sound or motion of the chocolate being deposited during manufacturing.”
https://www.hersheys.com/kisses/experience/our-story.aspx#/1907-An-American-Classic

“Kisses…inspired many…imitations. Originally, the Hershey logo was printed on a piece of tissue paper …underneath the silver foil. This aided knock-off producers because there was nothing visible…that differentiated the Hershey’s Kisses….To combat this, Hershey changed the wrapping…in 1921…inserted a “plume” or banner into the foil wrapping so Kisses…could be distinguished…later, the Kisses’ …were trademarked officially.” http://www.danschocolates.com/Chocolate-Learn/History/history-of-the-hershey-kiss.html

“…Milton S. Hershey, a Pennsylvania candy maker who’d failed twice in the confection businesses before hitting a winning formula… built a company town, Hershey, Pa., where he enjoyed the sweet smell of success.” http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2007-02-14/entertainment/sfl-valentines-hershey-kisses_1_hershey-s-kisses-chocolate-all-american-icon

“Kisses is one of the most popular brands of candies…spawning sales that topped $400 million. More than 60 million Hershey’s Kisses…are produced each day…” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hershey’s_Kisses

So I have the charm on a small chain–both gold tone $10
Let’s see Google’s offerings.

A plain Valentine’s Day-Candy Container-red Plastic- …$4

How about tin? From those that held candy ($5 – $25) to tin signs ($8-$20)

1995 Candy Dispenser $16.

There’s 1979 Hershey Kisses Plates. ” A Kiss For You ” … 4/$17 or 1 for $6

Hallmark Easter Lapel Pin Purple 1998 . $20

1998 TOPPER KISSES STAMP FOOTBALL PLAYER #10 for $20–confused as to purpose but it’s cute.

Happy New Year Figurine 2000 Kurt S Adler..$40

The most seem to be from 70’s through 90’s with tins and signs very abundant.

You’re not going to get rich on Kisses as the most expensive thing I found was a Teddy Bear
in the $50-$60 range.

I did a little better in the jewelry department: Large Solid Sterling Silver Charm or Pendant $82

LET’S MAKE THIS WEEK SOMETHING SPECIAL
NOT JUST ANOTHER OF THE 52.

WHAT OTHER BLOG HAS VIKING GHOSTS, GODS, WEREBEINGS AND–AND OF COURSE VAMPIRES

In case you haven’t noticed it’s Friday. I had another house day–work work work. And my room mate has a love affair going with my classic Z-28 rag top so they both were gone–don’t tell his girlfriend–so it was really quiet

Friday means it’s book feature day:
The Book: In the Company of Vampires
Which deals with Shape-sifters, Vikings, and a town filled with deranged opera fans…it’s a good thing Fran’s no ordinary mortal… ( http://katiemacalister.com/fun-stuff/dark-ones-connections/ ) This is book 8 (there’s about 12 or so) in this crazy series where anything and any creature can appear on any given page. If you like vampires with a difference and a lot of silliness then this is the series for you.

Humans have had a love hate thing going with the vampire for years:
The notion of vampirism has existed for millennia; cultures such as the Mesopotamians, Hebrews, Ancient Greeks, and Romans had tales of demons and spirits which are considered precursors to modern vampires.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire
. “Although there are cultural variations in the various legends, there is always one defining trait of a vampire: a vampire sucks blood. It consumes another to sustain it’s own life.” http://jungian.info/library.cfm?idsLibrary=9

My introduction to vampires was “The 1897 novel “Dracula” written by the Irish author Bram Stoker (who) has made Transylvania world famous.” http://www.kismetdao.com/book/dracula-by-bram-stoker.html To me this was the man who made Dracula a household word. It has gone on to be a major industry. “The continuing popularity of the vampire theme has been ascribed to a combination of two factors: the representation of sexuality and the perennial dread of mortality.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire

I WANT YOU ALL TO TELL ME 1. WHO’S YOUR FAVORITE VAMPIRE 2. WHICH YOU DISLIKE THE MOST.
I like Georgori (technically a Carpathian) in Feehan’s novels and dislike True Blood’s trailer trash vampires.

I actually have a vampire an original Grandpa Munster Doll ($10).

And Google?
Ghostbusters 1980’s TV Vampire action figure $8.

McCall’s #7739 Vampire, Pirate, Genie and Harem Girl ADULT (all in one package) $19

Little Big Book Jungle Jim and Vampire Woman 1937 $20.

Elvira Vampire Show Newspaper Supplement 1988 $20

Vampire Skeleton Illustration iPad Cases $64

Bayshore 1960s Vampire Nails $65

Vintage 90s The Masquerade Vampire Horror Movie Thriller Fashion $91–book

Buffy The Vampire Autographed Poster $149.

Replica 19th Century Vampire Killing / Slaying / Hunting Kit —this has beads, stake, hammer—rosary–you name it for
$1,195. (there’s a smaller one for only $750)

Bela Lugosi Dracula – Universal Movie Photo 1931- Vintage – Original $1,950. The Master-Vampire.

SOMETHING CHUBBY BESIDES ME

Actually out and about for a change. Did the Met up Group thing (they have them all over the country http://www.meetup.com/) last night. Nice evening. Back to work today. Weather is beautiful but we’re pushing 90’s…so much for spring.

I was reading about things to do in Palm Beach recently and came across a “Fun Fact” “The chubby lizards scurrying between the bougainvillea and along the sidewalks may look like they own the place but they’re actually a non-native species introduced deliberately to Palm Beach in 1940. Edible Orlando Spring 2014. It goes on to name them as the Bahamian curly-tailed lizards.

So I decided I’d find out the reason for the deliberate introduction. “Palm Beach and Martin Counties.reported the species as an introduced exotic…. The initial introduction was reported to have occurred as a result of 20 pairs released…Pendleton and Clarke Avenues…Palm Beach…” http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1113&context=icwdm_usdanwrc
We have the where.

“This species was…released…in an attempt to rid sugarcane of insect pests, and it has since expanded both north and south (Weigl et al. 1969). This native of the Bahama Islands is also popular in the pet trade, which has resulted in additional releases and escapes. It is now common in parks, in agricultural lands, along canal edges, along seawalls, and in other habitats in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties (Bartlett and Bartlett 1999). .” http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/nonnatives/reptiles/northern-curleytail-lizard/ And now the why.

“The precise effects of this species on the native lizards and other fauna of Florida remain…unexplored…The negative effects of invasive reptiles may not be readily…apparent. As a prime case in point, the devastating effects of the invasive brown tree snake on Guam was not recognized for decades…” http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1325&context=icwdm_usdanwrc

SO now we know and as in my own case chubby probably isn’t a good thing!

BUT lets be positive and look at collectibles. I have a lizard bracelet but it’s not for sale.
