Life is Better in Flip Flops

Today I’m taking you with me for one of my trips to Key West—Corona Virus style

I have included all manner (see next below) topics  on other subjects for those who don’t like Key West or crazy rambling or what ever—if we click on the next one for instance you will join someone on a journey across the country under shut down..  there’s lots more on multiple subjects so you can break up my ramblings and return later or just skip me altogether—have fun what ever you decide to do.

‘We are living in a different world’: Scenes from a drive across America

You’ll have to forgive my pictures—I added a lot of items —cut out of magazines, catalogs, etc to decorate the pages—as above you have two photos an two real—can you guess which is which?

First pictures are of

Casa Antiqua

314 Simonton Street

Key West, FL 33040

Hemingway and his wife arrived in Key West in 1928:  At that time this was “The Trev-Mor Hotel”   Well at least the upper store was—but the ground floor was a Ford Dealership—seems that Hemingway had arrived here by boat with the intent of driving north to the mainland (Florida) but the car was not immediately available and they put them up in the Trev-Mor until it was and Hemingway took a liking to the island and stayed on and got a house and because a fixture here for several years.

Oh and for those of you who know the history of the area might say—hey wait it bit there wasn’t a highway across the Keys–people who came here came by boat or train (on Flagler’s  Train line that ran from far north in the US to the tip of Florida and then on bridges, causeways and small islands till it ended in Key West)–however there were roads that ran about crossing Key West and north and ferries that could take your vehicle from one island to another—-and when you got to Key Largo there was a highway and bridges that got you to the mainland.

At one time this garden was open to the public—it’s new owner has stopped this access, which is too bad for by the pictures you can see the lovely garden as well as a pool that made it a quiet oasis in the middle of the crazy city, 3 pictures and 3 cut outs below.

3 more pictures of the garden and pool area—I believe it was apartments back then but I never really checked that out

This building is also the location for

Pelican Poop Shop

This eclectic collection of artwork includes originals from all over the Caribbean. If you’re in the market for a life-size, stone Mayan deer dancer or a Haitian oil-drum sculpture, this is the place to come.

Phones:
It’s been a long time since I visited this shop—it use to be you could pay to visit the garden area here—or if you made a purchase (don’t remember if there was a minimum purchase or not) you could visit without a charge.
this was one of those lesser known at least to the average tourist—but I never considered myself one of those….at the Parrot (as in Green) they use to call us temporary locals.  and they always took good care of us.
It was a fun, pretty and laid back place to visit…..another thing lost from the Key West I knew and love —here’s 3 more pictures and we’ll move on somewhere else on the island

How to Talk to Your Friends About Socializing Safely Post-Lockdown

but let’s go up into the Keys for awhile—-the bridge on the right might look vaguely familiar –it should be if you’ve ever seen True Lies with Arnold and  Jamie  the chase scene where they blow up the bridge….yeah that one.    When we visited Pigeon Key we did take the shuttle advertised at the bottom of the picture.

The key is an interesting place to visit—-it was originally used by Flagler’s railroad builders as a home base—most of the houses here were built for the workers to sleep, eat an store equipment while they built the seven mile bridge—the bridge you cross to get to the island is part of the original bridge—-here is an exit on to the enter the island and then the bridge continues on—though you can only go a short distance further on it.  In addition to going out there to see the island I have walked out to the end of the bridge with a few others to watch  the sun set into the Gulf—a beautiful sight to see.

Later the island:  Starting in 1968, served for 20 years as an environmental field station for international researchers studying tropical marine and island ecologies with the University of Miami. In 1993, the Pigeon Key Foundation assumed stewardship and began restoration efforts to turn it into a museum.

But there are legends here  and adventure—l just love to explore the old house or set on the dock and watch life go by on the active bridge above and the lively waters below— of this area that is part of Florida BUT NOT REALLY…..  a land joined to the mainland originally by Flagler who made his mark on Florida from St. Augustine to Palm Beach, to Miami and finally to the Keys and especially Key West.

But don’t take my word for it:

and course the arrangements around the Virus:

The Pigeon Key Foundation is looking forward to our 2020 Marine Summer Camp season that will run Monday-Friday from July 6th to August 7th. While fun and education are important to our campers’ experience, safety is always the man focus of our staff. We have been working diligently to ensure our programming, dorms, and island is up to the CDC and American Camp Associations standards regarding COVID-19.

To make sure we continue to provide the safest camp experience for children, there will be no historical tours taking place during our Summer Camp Season starting Wednesday, July 1st. Visiting boaters will no longer be able to dock-up at our facility during this time. Our normal tour schedule will resume again on Saturday, August 8th. We thank you for your consideration and understanding and look forward to your next visit to Pigeon Key!
