IT’S SUMMER TIME SO LET’S MAKE THE LIVING AS EASY AS POSSIBLE.

I read somewhere the other day that you can learn the temperature outdoors by listening to a cricket chirp!  You count the number of chirps in 14 seconds, then add 37.  The sum results in the current temperature in Fahrenheit, give or take a few degrees.    I DON’T NEED  THIS–I’M IN FLORIDA–IT’S SUMMER SO IT’S HOT.

But how about some hints for having a better summer?

Save some money when the weather is hot outside by closing blinds and window coverings to keep the sun from heating up your home and the A/C working overtime and avoid using the oven to cook as it makes house hotter.

From the AAP to prevent sunburn in children are to avoid sun exposure, and dress infants in lightweight clothes that cover arms/leg and a hat to shade face.  If they must be in the sun then try (at least 15) a small amount of sun screen to the areas still exposed, http://ehealth.cooperhealth.org/2009/05/helpful-hints-surviving-summer-kids/

On long road trips make a pit stop every three hours or so to get out of the car and stretch your legs. If stops are less frequent you can perform these travel exercises (http://www.smartertravel.com/photo-galleries/editorial/in-flight-exercises-that-arent-totally-embarrassing-.htmlid=471&photo=48051&source=26627_) to increase your circulation.
Got aphids? … get some tape! Wrap a wide strip of tape around your hand, sticky side out, and pat the leaves of plants infested with aphids. Concentrate on the undersides of leaves, because that’s where the little buggers like to hide.  http://www.hgtv.com/gardening/14-simple-gardening-tips-and-tricks/index.html

I KNOW IT DOESN’T BOTHER YOU–BUT LOTS OF PEOPLE ARE STRESSED ABOUT IT

HAVEN’T CHECKED MY #VINTAGE JEWELRY AND #PRECIOUSMOMENTS on my store yet—just click above you might find something you can’t live without.

In the Healthy Edge (April 2014) STRESS is described as “reacting to a challenge that disturbs physical or mental balance”  Such a simple description for something that bothers us so much.  Does there beat a heart that hasn’t been increased by a dead line, a family crisis or something so simple as helping with a child with a school project, we are a stress driven and beaten society.

Stress makes us sick:

1.  Heart Disease

2.  Asthma

3.  Obesity

4.  Diabetes

5.  Headaches

6.  Depression & Anxiety

7.  Gastro-intestional Problem

8.  Alzheimer’s

9.  Accelerated aging

10.  Pre-mature death

  • Are just some of the health conditions that can be made worse or even caused by your STRESS

http://www.webmd.com/balance/stress-management/features/10-fixable-stress-related-health-problems

Signs of stress include:

  • Apathy, lack of energy
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Difficulty “keeping track” of things
  • Feeling on edge
  • A change in eating habits
  • Sleeping more than usual or difficulty getting to sleep
  • Being more emotional
  • Using alcohol or drugs to relieve or forget stress
  • http://my.clevelandclinic.org/healthy_living/stress_management/hic_warning_signs_of_emotional_stress_when_to_see_your_doctor.aspx

So what can you do about it….move to a desert island—naw you’d stress about being alone….

What can you do?
After work you might try: As soon as you arrive home, shed whatever reminds you of work: stash your bag out of sight and kick off your heels. (change into something comfortable). Next, do something that offers a change of pace… If you’re a desk drone, head outside for a run or a swim; if you’re on your feet all day, ease into a warm bath. Soon you’ll feel yourself mentally drifting away from what stresses you out.”

First don’t forget to click on my store above—it has now been all reorganized and easier to navigate.  Will be adding new items from now on.

SUPER MOON:  Sat 7/12 was the first of 3 super moons this year:  “The super moon is technically known as a “perigee moon,” and occurs when the moon is full as it reaches perigee, the point of its orbit closest to the earth, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said in a statement. It looks largest when it’s closest to the horizon – an optical illusion.”  http://earthsky.org/space/the-many-ways-the-sun-can-kill-us-all?utm_source=EarthSky+News&utm_campaign=e8389450ba-EarthSky_News&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c643945d79-e8389450ba-394015825  The other super or supermoon spottings will be Aug. 10 and Sept. 9, according to NASA.

“Like most such celestial occurrences, superstitions are associated with the Super-moon as well. Many believe the phenomenon to be a harbinger of ill luck which causes natural calamities and affects human behavior. The NASA, however, has debunked all such theories stating that there is no scientific evidence to show a co-relation between phases of the moon and the incidence of crime, sickness, human behavior etc.”  http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/Supermoon-to-light-up-the-sky-tonight/articleshow/20720465.cms

IT’S THE END OF THE MEN’S WORLD WEEK—REPENT OR HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND–IT’S YOUR CHOICE

OK I currently have no #men’s stuff at my store (click on word store above) yet—but I have some great 1980’s and 90’s #Nascar stuff that’s going on soon—so keep checking it and the Blog out.  BY the way I have cleaned it up a bit already so if you looked yesterday try again today.

NOW THE BLOG:

Since it’s Book Drop Friday time thought I’d give you some books for men today:

1.  Invisible Man   by Ralph Ellison:  The growling giant of great American novels, maximalist and mythic, devoured by, and reborn in, all the craving, rage, and lunacy one nation — and a nameless young narrator — can hold

2.  Dino     by Nick Tosches:  Biography of Dean Martin, dripping with Tosches’s love and contempt for the Italian barber’s son

3.  Advise and Consent  by Allen Drury:  Written by a 1950’s newspaper hack whose beat was Capitol Hill, Has got closet cases and State Department commies, confirmation bloodbaths, blackmail, and suicide, and is as gripping today as when it first appeared fifty years ago.

4.  What It Takes    by Richard Ben Cramer:  Published this gorgeous and absorbing undertaking about running for the American presidency in 1992… this is the book against which all such books will be measured for the next fifty years.

5.  Women    by Charles Bukowski:  Henry Chinaski, the gritty, drunken poet protagonist of Bukowski’s best novel, is an irresistible bastard, .. rough, more than a little mean, eternally horny, broken, beaten, isolated, needy, and somehow smarter than he used to be.  http://www.esquire.com/features/essential-knowledge/top-books-for-men-0310#slide-9

100 years ago today (June 11, 1914) George Herman “Babe” Ruth” made his major league debut as a pitcher (he stayed in for seven innings for the Red Sox /beat Cleveland Indians 4-3)

As you know I’m a collectible person and so let’s look at some manly collectibles:  Steins (I will have steins on my store, but nothing this fancy)

METTLACH STEINS
Popular since the 1950 with US collectors they are manufactured at the Villeroy & Boch factory in Mettlach, Germany.  You can identify them as  most include the word “Mettlach” and either “Vileroy & Boch” or “VB” on the bottom.   They are numbered and vary in value depending on the numbers made, markings etc.
Examples:
#2038/Rodenstein, Germany motif with relief, figural inlaid lid went for $1,663 lately (and it had a repaired chip)
#3156/Chicago landmarks etched inlaid (repaired chip) $2,760
#3091 Drinking knights etched by Schlitt  $636
#1817 Bicycle etched by Schultz (new  lid) $1,470
#2765 Knight on white horse  $1,740

Rita Rudner’:   Men like to barbecue. Men will cook if danger is involved.
“Let me finish my beer.” (Stark) “Of course. The end of the world can wait.(Kasabian)”― Richard KadreyKill the Dead
“Don’t wake me for the end of the world unless it has very good special effects.”

According to AMC (http://www.filmsite.org/guyfilms.html) the top best guy films are:

5. THE TERMINATOR 1984
Arnold Schwarzenegger “He operates completely outside all the built-in social constraints.”
Best Line: “I’ll be back

1. DIRTY HARRY 1972

According to POPCRUNCH (http://www.popcrunch.com/20-worst-chick-flicks-of-all-time/) the worst Chick Flicks (a name for movies that most men hate or at least they insist they do):

5. SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE

1. TITANIC
You’re left wanting Leonardo DiCaprio to just hurry up and die already.

Men Like the Color Blue
Blue is a favorite color of both men and women of all ages. However, men have a much stronger preference for blue than women. It may be the calming effect of the color blue that makes it a popular color…It’s possible that men tend toward blue because they’ve noticed that women find men in blue attractive…” http://desktoppub.about.com/od/choosingcolors/f/mencolors.htm

And finally what do Men Like when it comes to Women

5. Laid-Back
Just relaxed

4. Spontaneity
Who can do things spur-of-the-moment

3. Unmaterialistic

So MAN-UP

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD WEEK–BUT DON’T ASK THEM TO TALK ABOUT IT

In an article in the June Natural Awakenings Dwight Franklin stated:

“I was taught at a young age what being a man was suppose to look like…Men simply did not feel that they could experience the full range of emotions in their life experience.”

“Most men have a hard time communicating anything that remotely resembles an emotion. Why? Because emotions are scary to men, who think much more than they feel, and much of the time, many men don’t even know what or how they are feeling.” http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/emotional-fitness/201008/men-women-emotions-and-communication

And ladies this isn’t our delusion: “University of Montreal study found: Women are better than men at distinguishing between emotions, especially fear…demonstrated that women are better than men at processing auditory, visual and audiovisual emotions.”

But other studies show: “that, contrary to popular belief, when a relationship is in trouble it is men who suffer the most. Romantic ups and downs apparently have a greater effect on the mental health of young men than women.” hgtp://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1285184/Relationship-break-ups-hit-men-harder-women-researchers-claim.html#ixzz36ssuGJrw

“there is substantial evidence to show that men have more difficulty in expressing their emotions and exert greater controls over the expression of emotions.
men spend more time ruminating over negative emotions.
men share their emotions with far fewer.
men express emotions with less intensity.
men use less emotional language and fewer ’emotion’ words.
behavior seems less affected by expressions of emotion.
men are more likely to under-report negative feelings.
men are more willing to express emotions likely to be viewed as demonstrating power or control. For example, pride, anger and jealousy.
http://menshealth.about.com/od/psychologicalissues/a/emotions.htm

An example of what long term suppression can do is suppressing fear can damage the immune and endocrine system resulting in development of several serious illnesses.

SO WHAT KIND OF EMOTIONS CAN WE COLLECT (OR SELL)–GOOGLE DOESN’T SUPPRESS:

Henry Fonda Angry Men 1957 Movie Photo $10

THIS WEEK IT’S A MAN’S WORLD AND TODAY WE START WITH THE KING

So we’re going back a ways for this one–and a lot of you guys will be in a different generation but I thought an older man might be the thing to start my Man’s World Week: “…Elvis Aaron Presley was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child.” http://www.elvis.com/about-the-king/biography_.aspx On July 18, 1953, Presley first went to the Memphis Recording Service at the Sun Record Company, now commonly known as Sun Studio.[2] He paid $3.98 to record first of two double-sided demo acetates, “My Happiness” and “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_recorded_by_Elvis_Presley_on_the_Sun_label

Recently I saw a book 100 Things Elvis Fans Should Know and Do Before They Die ww.elvisnews.com/news.aspx/100-things-elvis-fans-should-know-do-before-they-d/14415#.U7qmpvk7uQo

So I decided to see what I could find on the legend

Dewey Phillips a 28-year-old disc jockey in Memphis was the first person to play an Elvis record (“That’s All Right”) all the way through on air. He played on July 8, 1954 (60 years ago tomorrow).

When Elvis played in City Auditorium, San Angelo, Texas in January 1955 they had his name as “Alvis Presley” for a performance in a 1,855 seat auditorium. http://www.randomhouse.com/rhpg/promos/elvisdaybyday/1955.html

September 1955, Presley had his first Number One country record, a version of Junior Parker’s “Mystery Train” b/w “I Forgot to Remember to Forget.”
Read more: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/artists/elvis-presley/biography#ixzz36nED9SOY

Did you know that in 1975 Elvis bought a Convair 880 Jet, from Delta Airlines, for sum of $250,000. After refurbishing, the total exceeded $600,000. He immediately rechristened it the Lisa Marie…”The plane is now at Graceland. http://www.elvis.com.au/presley/lisa_marie_convair_880_jet.shtml

Had the Billboard Hot 100 existed when Presley began his career… experts estimate Elvis would have put 31 (currently has 108) more songs into the charts, including Hound Dog, Heartbreak Hotel and Don’t Be Cruel.

SO IS GOOGLE A FAN (CHECK THOSE CLOSET YOU JUST MIGHT HAVE A MAJOR MEMORY)

1989 Elvis Presley “The Memphis Flash” Plate $50

16″ Elvis Presley Ceramic Statue $150

1984 Elvis Presley toy guitar $300

“There have been many accolades uttered about Elvis’ talent and performances through the years, all of which I agree with wholeheartedly. I shall miss him dearly as a friend. He was a warm, considerate and generous man.”

-Frank Sinatra, 1977

AS SO OFTEN HAPPENS EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN EVEN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY

OK MAKE IT THROUGH TODAY AND YOU’RE A GO FOR THE WEEKEND.

Nothing says celebrations for the 4th like fireworks. While they are used for many occasions now, more than ever before, they have long been a tradition for the July day of independence. But if you think they are a relatively new phenom you’re very wrong.

Fire works started with a little bang in the 7th century AD when it is believed that the firecracker (another staple for the 4th) was invented in China. In fact so the legend goes a cook spilled saltpeter (a.k.a. potassium nitrate) in a fire and boom no more stove. Actually “Gunpowder was supposed to be a potion for unlimited life…Ancient Chinese alchemists were trying to find a potion for immortality and they ended up making gunpowder. When the Chinese found out that it exploded they used it for fire works.” http://fourriverscharter.org/projects/Inventions/pages/china_gunpowder.htm

By the 13th century it had finally made it to Europe. “One theory of how gunpowder came to Europe is that it made its way along the Silk Road through the Middle East; another is that it was brought to Europe during the Mongol invasion in the first half of the 13th century,or during the subsequent diplomatic and military contacts.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_gunpowder

“The first recorded fireworks in England were at the wedding of King Henry VII in 1486.” http://www.thefireworksfirm.co.uk/25-interesting-facts-about-fireworks.php

“In 1777, Philadelphians remembered the 4th of July. Bells were rung, guns fired, candles lighted, and firecrackers set off. However, while the War of Independence dragged on, July 4 celebrations were modest at best.” http://www.factmonster.com/spot/independenceday1.html

Boston also saw a fireworks display in 1777. In the following years, the tradition spread through the Boston area to New York and other cities, with various papers reporting colorful displays lighting the sky at the time.” http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2013/07/03/why-we-watch-fireworks-on-the-fourth-of-july
