The Florida Keys are a series of islands extending from the southeastern tip of Florida.

Haven’t done any cuties lately—and if this one isn’t cute—-then I don’t know the meaning of the word.  I met him and his staff on main street in Mt. Dora–Hope his friends found their way down to Pisces for an outdoor lunch.

Endless sunshine, well-lubricated happy hours, and a free-spirited vibe have lured some of the world’s best writers to Key West, Florida. Literary heavyweights like Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, and Robert Frost have all called the Keys home, and their influence is still visible on the islands today—-|

The Royal Palm Railway Experience is  central Florida’s premier tourist railroad, the Orlando & Northwestern Railway! Based in Tavares, FL,, “America’s Seaplane City”, in the region known as the “Golden Triangle”, the Royal Palm Railway Experience is only a short 30-mile drive northwest from Orlando!  And with that I begin another answered question for one of my readers (or future ones).

Golden Triangle Route

Discover Eustis, Mount Dora and Tavares on The Golden Triangle Route. Hop-on and hop-off at any destination and ride all day.  The trains are beautifully restored 1940 vintage passenger cars that take you across central Florida as well back in time.

check out their site here for just a few of the many adventures and excursions.

I’ve put an email thru to the company to get exact information on the locations that you enter and/or exit the trains to allow you easier hook up for this fun adventure.

Best Time To Go

Peak tourist season in the Florida Keys begins in late December, right after the holidays, and the area remains busy through May. The number of visitors drops during the summer months, but for Florida residents and other travelers who don’t mind a bit of humidity, the summer months offer an opportunity to take advantage of thinned-out crowds and better deals on hotels. June 1 to November 30 is officially hurricane season in the Keys, though August, September, and November are the most vulnerable months.

Hurricane Irma Damage Reports from Florida Keys to Key West

A quick list from some of our favorite bars and restaurants in the Florida Keys. Check their Facebook pages for more information. We included pictures or video if they were harder to locate.

  • Caribbean Club, Key Largo – No damage. Open for business.
  • Blond Giraffe Key Lime Pie Factory, Key Largo – Minor damage to gardens. Closed until Oct. 15.
  • Sharkey’s Pub & Galley Restaurant, Key Largo – Minor water damage downstairs. Open for business.
  • Snappers, Key Largo – Significant damage. Closed.
  • Alabama Jacks, Card Sound Rd. – Found 3 different people commenting on FB that Alabama Jacks has some damage to one porch, had flooding. Cleaning up and should be open soon

Based on this (2017)—and everything opening soon doesn’t appear to be any severe damage about Largo.

Mitten Cats (I’ve not heard them called this before and many people question the connection with Hemingway—but none-the-less they do now dwell at Hemingway’s former home on Key West)

Mitten cats have six toes, and their origin can be traced back to the Keys. The legendary Ernest Hemingway was rumored to have received a mitten cat on his voyage through the Keys. Hemingway’s house and museum are home to a collection of mitten cats.

ISLAMORADA
This is a great key—while Largo has its multiple dive shops and organizations and boats this island is more noted for its sports fishing fleet.   Bass Pro  https://stores.basspro.com/us/fl/islamorada/81576-overseas-highway.html
has a huge sporting goods store at MM 82.5—it’s a great place to visit even if you aren’t into sports with such items as a replica of Ernest Hemingway’s boat the Pilar which he plied these islands back in the 30’s and in which he came up here after the island was devastated by the Great Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 to assist with the rescue and recovery.   It is here they started their chain of restaurants when they bought and maintained the Islamorada Sea Food Company that was already there on the bay  https://www.islamoradafishco.com/contact/#florida
The view and location are fantastic and well worth a stop for the view and at east a drink after you wear your self out checking out the store.   While not really wild and crazy it is a bit above and beyond your usual Bass Pro Shop so….
Florida, or La Florida, was discovered by Ponce de Leon in 1513. His crew nicknamed the island of Key West Florida Los Martires, or the martyrs, because of the thick and twisted mangroves along the shores of these Florida Keys southernmost islands. European charts and maps listed Key West, Florida as Cayo Hueso, or Bone Key, because of sun bleached bones found on the island.

While many people think of Key West when they think of Sunset I find a place in Islamorada fondly.  Lor-e-Lei Restaurant at MM82  http://www.loreleicabanabar.com/
is a great place to have a meal a “few” drinks and enjoy a real KEY’s sunset–while Key Largo flirts with Miami, less than 50 miles away Islamorada gives you the first taste of what this little part of the USA which doesn’t quite belong and everybody knows it but tries to pretend they don’t.  Anyway Lor-e-Lei’s I a great place to get a taste of that feeling and the intoxication of it.    When I describe Cornwall (see June 2016 of my blog for my month’s sojourn there) to Floridians I tell them that it’s to England what the Keys are to Florida–they understand immediately–more so if they’ve spent any time on the islands.

A sign that the Keys still shelter and provide a place that encourages artists, are places like the Old Road Galleryhttp://www.oldroadgallery.com/

(88888 Old Highway, Islamorada, FL 33070)  Besides its resident artists Dwayne and Cindy King it also features work by other Keys artists and in addition to a workshop there is a hardwood garden with paths featuring sculptures and other marvelous things.

The fact that the Keys do things their way is established with places like The History and Discovery Center

https://www.keysdiscovery.com/

which sets on the property of the Islander Resort https://www.islanderfloridakeys.com/

, and which is open Wednesdays through Sundays, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

Bike the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail: A bike trail extends from Key Largo to Key West, but it’s not finished and some sections put cyclists next to highway traffic in a narrow shoulder.

In Islamorada, however, this trail takes the Old Highway and this section makes a delightful, scenic and safe 20-mile roundtrip. For 10 miles, the old state road (State Highway 4A) parallels U.S. 1 on the ocean side. It’s a scenic stretch, but has only occasional water views as it mostly passes through a woodsy residential area. It’s fun to spend time seeing life in the Keys up close, including places where people live and work. (A nice stop along the way is the Old Road Gallery, 88888 Old Highway, Tavernier, where you also can see one of the concrete “hurricane houses” built by the Red Cross after the 1935 hurricane.)
