The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

CONVERSATION HEART RICE KRISPIE TREATS

Valentines day really didn’t beat May day in ancient time:  What has vanished, from the celebration of May Day,  are the fertility rites that accompanied the raising of the Beltane May pole that once continued unabashed and unashamed throughout the entire month of May.  Marriage vows were considered to be in abeyance and enthusiastic promiscuity was the duty of every pious worshiper.

More on the Ciggie Tour

As I said last time we went thru the horror of 9/11 and on the other side try to adjust to a new world reality and we told Camel that yes we were still going….and started getting things ready for the trip and going to a different country—the first time I’d done that before…unless you count Canada when I lived in Michigan.

One change I found from 9/11 was the fact that the demand for pass ports seem to greatly decline—-we had been told to get a first pass port we needed to put everything in a few months early to be sure we got them prior to the trip.  So we did and had in our house all ready to go in less than 2 weeks….WoW…

We checked out what to do and I began to make reservations for myself—for while Mike would agree to the 6 days and 5 nights—he had a business and just couldn’t stay longer—and besides he was only going so I could make the trip so……

Royal Romances of The British Monarchy

The word chivalry is derived from the French cheval, a horse.  The word knight, which originally meant boy or servant, was particularly applied to a young man after he was admitted to the privileges of bearing arms.  This privilege was conferred on youths of family and fortune only, for the mass of the people were not furnished with arms.  The knight, then was a mounted warrior, a man of rank, or in the service and maintenance of some man of rank, generally possessing some independent means of support, but often relying mainly on gratitude of those whom he served for the supply of his wants, and often, no doubt, resorting to the means which power confers on its possessor.

on PBS—give you a St. Valentines Day that isn’t all hearts and     flower—more like bullets and bodies….it tells Capone’s life and how he is an Icon in a day when few Americans could name another famous person from that day–a nice group of people including his niece  who remembers him—a monster celebrity —a fore runner of some of the popular crime lords that are known to us in more modern times.  The hero worship of the anti-hero.

Angel Heart

While the name sounds like a perfect fit for Valentines day I warn you that this movie is one that inserts the knife in you back and twists it—it is a about a private eye who is hired by the character played by Robert DeNiro—and trust me this is the part that he played that stuck in my mind more than others—-it is a a dark and gloomy movie that is fantastic in my mind even though it has left a dark memory in the corner of my mind.  It is only for the strong of heart with lots of lights in their house.  Angel Heart

Hungry for History – Henry Plant:19th Century Visionary, the Plant System and Savannah

Exotic Beauty that still Lives on in Tampa

Most people who think of coming to Florida think of the parks—in Tampa there’s Bush Gardens with its huge collection of animals, rides and adventures—–But Tampa has been around for years that the tourists often miss learning about.  So today I’ll tell you a bit about a place that might change your mind about the City on the Bay.

Tampa was just getting started during this time and Henry B. Plant put in some rail roads into the area and inspired by or wanting to out shine Flagler who developed the eat coast with a fantastic hotel in St Augustine and then on to Palm Beach where he developed the city and another fairy tale hotel as well as a home for himself and then on to build a railway, which is now the Over Seas Highway (with many bridges) from Island to Island in the Florida Keys and another of those fantastic hotel in Key West.

Plant was never to meet the amazing vision and accomplishments of Flagler—But he did build trains to Tampa which at the time was a small non-developed area setting rather isolated near the bay.  He built the train tracks in and connected the developing Ybor City and it’s cigar factories to the rest of Florida.    He went on to build this hotel which opened in January 1891 which was to become one of America’s premier winter resort.  Legend says that Plant sent a telegram to invite Flagler to his new hotel in Tampa.  Flager’s reply also by telegram:  “Where’s Tampa”.

The final hotel was huge being a quarter-mile in length and reportedly having 500 guest rooms.  There was a domed dining room, a solarium even a galleried entry rotunda.  It was the height of sophistication with telephone service in each room.  .  There were tennis courts, a golf course and even quail shooting on the grounds.

If you look at the picture above you will see the building that John A. Wood built that look of Turkish or Moorish origins—unlike anything else you see in the country—even in our current age.   In 1898 during the Spanish American Teddy Roosevelt stayed here prior to his company departing to Cuba and his Rough Riders were often seen carrying out maneuvers and the like on the grounds of the hotel

Today the hotel is part of the University of Tampa—but happily the original building stands all it classic lines—a reminder of its beautiful and original beginnings—today much of it holds college designated inside space..  But the building still holds a museum that shows you what the hotel once was.

Which includes

Former Writing and Reading rooms (a room used by men only for news paper reading) restored with original furnishings,  with a video that introduces you to the hotel’s history.

Spanish American War Room

Tells the story of the hotel’s part in the war (at that time Tampa was the city nearest Cuba with bot rail and port.).

Parlor Suite

This room at various times was occupied by Sarah Bernhardt,, Babe Ruth and Thomas Edison to name a few—they were said to enjoy luxurious yet quiet elegance.

The remander of the rooms show a variety of the places like the hotel’s gardens and tries to reproduce the life in that time.  There are various special exhibition during the year and an annual Victorian Christmas Stroll to assist with this.

Romantic Things To Do in Key West

The oldest record of a valentine being sent, according to History.com, was a poem written by a French medieval duke named Charles to his wife in 1415. Charles penned this sweet note to his lover while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London at just 21 years old. One of the lines in the poem? “I am already sick of love, My very gentle Valentine.

Hugh Grant talks to Joe Leydon about “Notting Hill”

So is every body ready for Valentine’s Day—-it’s Sunday in case you forgot.  So what are you doing—–I don’t have a significant other so I don’t get or give much for the holiday.,   BUT I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR ADVENTURES—-someone has to be doing something some time???? OR NOT!!!!!

Have been trying to get signed up for the vaccine—two of my friends have had both shots and several more are signed up to get injections net week—but I never hear back from anyone and I was on one site for an hour and 15 min before they finally gave away all the appointments for the next weeks but none could be spared to me—-It’s just not my week I guess…..Hope you’re getting all set for ending this mess for you at least….GOOD LUCK

But is your favorite drippy romance—I like Notting Hill where Hugh Grant falls in love with a very neurotic movie star played by Julia Roberts a movie start who comes and goes from his life—it’s kinda reversal on the roles—With Grant being love struck—a usually more feminine sentiment and Roberts playing the commitment shy more male inconsistencies.  But it still remains the one I watch when I get down and out.
