History of Mayport and Jacksonville, FL

Jacksonville:  With so much known about how and why Jacksonville was named, the tantalizing fact is that so far no record has been found of the exact date in June 1822 when the city officially came into being.  Probably the events were spread over number of days.   Every city mus have a birthday, however, so Jacksonville has selected June 15, the date when the settlers petitioned Congress for recognition as a point of entry.  Jacksonville is the county seat of Duval Co.

For a time in the mid-1700’s, both San Mateo and San Juan were shown on the same Florida maps as two names for one river.

It was during the British period in Florida (20 years) 1763-1783, that San Juan finally became St. John’s and since has remained the same, except for dropping of the apostrophe.
