An evening with Straightjacket

IN THE SPRING of 1692, a dangerous hysteria descended upon the quiet town of Salem, Massachusetts, snaking through the community like an insidious virus. Over the coming months, a group of young girls claiming to be possessed by the devil condemned a score of men and women to the gallows in one of history’s most infamous witch hunts.

One of the hysteria’s most notable victims was 80-year-old farmer Giles Corey, accused of being a warlock after publicly questioning the girls’ motives. In September 1692, after spending months in prison and refusing to stand trial, Corey was stripped naked, a board was placed on his chest, and heavy stones were piled on him as life slowly drained from his body. It’s said that his ghost still roams Salem.

Howard Street Cemetery, where Corey is buried, is one of many sites across the United States believed to host the paranormal. Whether or not you believe in ghosts, their haunting lore is often rooted in very real histories.

Mount Dora, Central Florida

This small, quiet town that has museums, art galleries, restaurants and antique mall scattered on the “Mount” that gently slopes to Lake Dora, isn’t a place that you’d put in the most haunted category but along with hidden bomb  shelters (https://photos.orlandoweekly.com/inside-the-forgotten-mount-dora-catacombs-the-nations-largest-subterranean-bomb-shelter/?slide=1&y12s3gb)   there are a few things that go bump in the night.

The Lakeside Inn

https://www.lakeside-inn.com/

There have been at least two children and one gangster ghosts spotted here at this hotel which started with 10 rooms in 1883 and is now the longest continuing operated hotel in the state:  One is said to be a 9 year old named Amy (not all sources gives the name), who is thought to be a year girl that disappeared from the inn in 1892.  The other child is a 12 year old girl (at least that’s the estimate) in a blue dress.  There is one adult a man in a fedora hat that has been described as a gangster.

Now before you shake your head remember Capone had some homes in the state (but on  the coast) and actually breathed his last in Miami.  Rumored to have been in the area, Capone is said to have dined at the Whitmore House 30801 Ridgeview Ave. Mt Plymouth (town is between Mt. Dora and Sanford on Hwy 46.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Plymouth,_Florida.  But the link is vague at best with some claiming his bookkeeper lived here and that’s why the visit.  However the former resort town did have a major hotel and golf course at one time:  Capone was believed to frequent the nearby Mount Plymouth Hotel when “things heated up in Chicago,”  (for more info on hotel and other historical info on the town:  http://elhs.synthasite.com/mt-plymouth.php).

But while we’ve not claim to Capone in Mt. Dora its self:  ” Another grand property in Mount Dora called the “Water House” is rumored to have been a getaway house for gangster Meyer Lansky, but that’s another connection that’s hard to pin down,…The house overlooks Old Highway 441 and Lake Dora on Fairview Avenue.  https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/os-xpm-2000-08-06-0008060014-story.html

Tregiffian Passage Tomb (approx 2500 BC)
Adjacent to the Merry Maidens (https://www.cornwalls.co.uk/history/sites/merry_maidens.htm ) This is part of a whole complex of sites in this area–there is only an entrance now  as the tomb proper was destroyed by road work years ago.  Legend says that the stones were once maidens at a local wedding turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath/Sunday—if you look across the road you’ll see (in a farmer’s field–no admission w/out the owner’s permission) you can see the Pipers who played for them—they have been turned into the two largest standing stones in Cornwall (13 1/2 and 15 feet) for supplying the music for that encouraged the sin of dancing.—-they were rough on minor offenses in those day.

In the Isle of Man, there are several legends of fairy pigs, some friendly and some not, which haunt certain roads and bridges.  One near Glenfabs rather charmingly wears a red hat, and is apparently harmless.  Another known as the Ark Sonney is lucky to meet.  But the large white boar which haunts Grenaby bridge shows clearer traces of its divine linage, for it is a dangerous creature which sometimes seizes unhappy mortals and carries them up the river and through a cave near Barrule to the underworld.

Sancrerd Well, Cornwall
Known locally as Crone Well.  Opposite Sancreed Church next to a telephone kiosh is a path that leads to it.  This only a short walk of approximately 400 metres.  The well is underground but can be reached via a short flight of steps.  Around the wall can be see clouties hung on trees.  Close to the well is the remains of a small chapel.
Recently tests have show that these wells with a history of healing and being holy have a higher than average radiation level.  This well is said to have the highest levels found in Cornwall—at 200% higher than background level.   The source I read says that it is due to high concentration of Radon gas in this area…but they insist that the Radon has a short half-life so staying up to 30 min.  should be ok!
It might be noted that though a modern cross has been erected here the site is also claimed by local pagans and it is reported that there have been cl ashes between them and the Christian communities in the recent past.    They also describe the area as having a “great air of mystery.

On a Gravestone for Paul Lennis Swank
Canyonville, Oregon
Here under the dung of cows and sheep
Lies an old high climber fast asleep
His trees all topped and his lines all hung.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, to “provoke another to unlawful love by means of magick or witchery” violated the law.  It was punishable by imprisonment torture and sometimes even death.
Wicca Love Spells By Gerina Dunwich
South America:  Munuane
The Munane is a toothless, gray-haired guardian demon with eyes in his knees.  He always travels on a simple raft.  He carries a bow and only one arrow, for he never misses his target.  He is very large and somewhat slow-witted but equipped with charismatic powers and can physically lure his victim to him.  The Munuane is considered by the Sikuani to be the “Master of Fish,” and will appear wherever there are many fish in the water.
Dispelling & Disarming Techiques
When fishing in Sikuani waters, it is said a person must take only what he truly needs.  The Munuane lives to protect local residents and, as their guardian, considers all human beings edible and destructive.  If, by acting greedily, the hunter (or fisherman?) should encounter the Munuanee, its knees are its weakness.
