When is a Post Office NOT a post office?

As you all know If you’ve been keeping me company—is that I love Tintagel.  If you haven’t read about my trip to the UK go back to June 2016 (if you go to mid May 2016 you’ll see my two weeks in places like London, York, Nottingham and Edinburgh and then my friend going home and me going to Tintagel on my own for a month so you might find some of it interesting.

But today I just want you to explore and learn about a Post Office that once was but is really so much more.

This building is on Tintagel’s main Street and tourist area and was acquired by  the National Trust in 1903.  But that was so little of it’s life since it was built in the 14th c—and became a Post office after Sir Rowland Hill’s introduction of Penny Postage and an improvement of services to places like Tintagel that sets upon the northern Cornish Coast.

So obviously it was something else so here’s the  the story—It was originally a small manor house–and is one of the very few of these that have survived the years.  It has a typical set up for these late medieval manor house with a central single story hall open to the roof and around this are smaller rooms and a kitchen with bedrooms built on a second level which are limited usually to just one room above each so there is no full 2nd story—these rooms are more like lofts.

The post office came along in the 19th century as a rented room in the house.  By the late 1800’s the town had started to become a tourist destination–which is when Tennyson wrote a poem about King Arthur which raised visitor’s interest.

By the late 1800’s the house was sold for redevelopment and the post office found a new home.   In 1995 it was bought at auction by some artists for $300 pounds and an agreement that they would preserve it—and by 1903 the National Trust bought the restored building for $200 pounds

Today it is a museum with the rooms furnished with local furniture and the like.  They’ve even reproduced the Victorian post office complete with a Victorian village post office outside (1857).  It also holds a collection of unique historical needle point.

Moving to Deltona, FL? Check out Enterprise, FL on Lake Monroe

Enterprise Florida

Enterprise in case you don’t recognize the name (and lots of people don’t) is a small town on Lake Monroe in Central Florida.

The first settler here was Major C. Taylor along with his wife Polly (Polly died of typhus about 1841 and her grave can still be found in a current house in the area) and daughter, and he was a slave holder,   in 1841 when the closest European settlement was St. Augustine.

Originally named Fountain Place and then Enterprize (yes the z is correct for the original spelling).  Taylor by this time operated a sawmill in the town and a steam boat on the St. Johns River.  He  continued to mourn his wife, eventually relocating to Texas for a few years and then moved on to California where he lost his own life when a boat he was operating went down in a storm.

While Enterprise grew into a thriving town due to it’s location on Lake Monroe.

Spring To Spring Trail South

The town continued to grow as it hosted thousands of travelers each year as it was headquarters for two major figures in Florida steam boating:  Jacob BrocK and Count Fredrick DeBary.

Brock started his line in 1852 with a streamer called the Darlington which he used to make scheduled trips on the St. Johns.   Later his large side-wheeler boat that ran from Jacksonville to Enterprise (and if they wished to go further  on the river, to hunt and fish they could board smaller boats here as well) a dominant factor on shipping on the St. Johns until 1876 .  During this time Green Sulfur Springs was a popular place reached by travelers that went overland from Enterprise  to this destination where they partook of the water and inhaled the healing scent of the long leaf pine.   Brock was also responsible for the Brock (what else?) Hotel in the early 1850s, for his passengers.

When the war came to Florida the Union’s vessels raided locations primarily on the coast but making occasional trip on the St. Johns River to Enterprise, destroying random property along the way.

The town was said to be the Key to Volusia County’s  development.  By 1876 the city was one of America’s leading tourist’s attraction and Volusia County’s first county seat.  it had  a 2 1/2 story hotel with a capacity of 50 gust at a time as well as many store.  Invalids came for the climate and sportsmen to fish and hunt.

But what goes up may soon come down and by  1887 it had started it’s decline with Sanford and Deland growth and by 1889 Deland had replaced Enterprise as the county seat of Volusia (Sanford would become the county seat of a new county Seminole but that’s a whole other story.)

As late as  the mid–1980’s the town still had its own post office (though at that time it was just a room in the post mistress’ house)

It seems that the end of the River Boat Era was the end of the town, with little remaining except a an intersection with a cemetery on Enterprise road

and an Episcopal Chapel which dates back to the hey days of the town  as well as the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home was established in Enterprise in 1908 as the Florida Methodist Orphanage.  The town does not even have a zip code.
