A fact about this area you may not know that in the 1950’s people along the St. John’s River claimed to see a giant monster on the River.  In fact there were many reports, even in the news papers and it was called (naturally) the St. Johns River Monster.   While most of the sightings were recorded between Aster Park and Blue Springs, there were sightings as far north as Jacksonville and as far south as Lake Monroe—that lake Sanford sits on and we crossed over to see this area.   These sightings gradually grew few and fewer till they stopped altogether, except in 1975 when it make a one more time appearance on the river near Jacksonville.

215 S Woodland Blvd.                             This hotel was built in 1924—just two years before Florida started the Great Depression early–a prediction of what the rest of the country was to expect.   Major hurricanes in 1926 and 1928 which killed many and caused a great damage  contributed to the rapid decline…..eventually the hotel was reduced to a shadow of its former self but has maintained its existence and it has more recently had a major remake and is now DeLand’s only Boutique Hotel.

The Artisan Grill use to take up most of the ground floor but I recently heard that they had closed so don’t know what is in the area now but there is a reception area there which the restaurant shared the are with—I honestly don’t know if they would mind if you stepped inside for a look—I know I have done this all over even the posh hotels in London have allowed so it’s up to you if you want to try or not.

The Artisan Hotel Haunted?  DeLand Florida Best Down Town?

According to Haunted Places:  one of the most haunted in the state, but unusually, the ghosts of this inn tend to be relatively inactive apart from during the winter months. A visiting medium stated that up to thirteen ghosts inhabit the building, proving that the hotel is immensely popular with the spirit set. According to a guidebook, Room #002 is the most popular, with strange poltergeist activity being attributed to a mischievous spirit. Among the other ghosts reported are a man and woman in period clothing, a young girl looking for her mother, a prostitute strangled in the main banquet room, a worker who appeared on several occasions in the basement and a mysterious blue light that floats through an upstairs hallway.

Many people come to DeLand for its access to the wilderness areas that nearly surround the town.  But as we are seeing today the city is worth a visit all on its own.  Especially for its historic district–the town was in fact incorporated 140 years ago (1882) and is said to be the best small town in Central Florida and given that it has a university and is a county seat it s even higher on the scale.

Stetson University came to DeLand in the 1880’s when the town was  uncertain if it had a future after the Great Freeze had destroyed its entire citrus crop with about 90% of the trees destroyed as well.  But thank to John B. Stetson’s (he invented and manufactured  as well, the Stetson Hat—you know the one the cowboys wear) contributed monies to keep it functioning and Deland who had founded it change the school’s nae to Stetson in honor of his saving it from closing.

For nearly four decades Donavon Frankenreiter has been travelling the globe, first as a professional surfer and now as a musician. Born in Southern California, Donavon spent most of his youth chasing waves, turning pro at the age of 16. These days instead of surf competitions, it’s concert halls that brings Frankenreiter to town, where he entertains audiences with his unique blend of laid-back grooves, philosophical lyrics and soulful delivery. You can find him touring the world with his three-piece band and still catching waves anytime he can.

You Can—and should–train yourself to be happy:  Our brains are predisposed to see the glass as half-empty.  This “negativity bias” might have helped our ancestors recognize threats to their survival.  But in today’s world, our brains benefit from amore positive outlook.  In a small study, participants who practiced being mindful about positive experience increased the amount of gray matter they had in the brain regions involved in learning, memory, and emotion regulation.

It gives the impression of immense power and is certainly one of the most attractive bridgs across the Thames, especially when lit up at night.

I have lived in the Orlando area for many years and can assure you that it is the business center of Central Florida–a business hub—but much more.

It is an area of all manner of museums, galleries and theaters.     It is home to the Orlando Ballet, and the Orlando Philharmonic,    The art community includes the Menello Museum of American Art.  There’s even a

Downtown Art District.

So try at least one part of real Florida (or even Orlando) which doesn’t include movies, cartoons, computer games and like that.   Please.

So, 102 passenger and up to 30 crew crammed on to the Mayflower and set sail on 16 September 1620,  packed like sardines in quarters not tall enough for anyone over five feet, enduring cold and damp, and  living off paltry rations.  And the delay with the Speedwell meant the crossing had to be done during stormy season.

Galveston Museum Day(s) 2021: 1892 Bishop’s Palace in Galveston, Texas | VisitGalveston.com

Galveston

I have long watched this Texas town on the Gulf of Mexico beset with great  and small as well hurricanes and everytime I go there I am amazed that there are still buildings standing let alone the old and grand mansions that among other structures grace this beautiful and one of my favorite Texas destination.

But let’s just see what there is in this town that attracts so  many visitors—today we’ll look at “the Other Attractions” that grace the town.

There’s Gulf at Galveston Country Club  (pictured above).  They  also have tennis courts, a swimming pool and a boat dock.

The Galveston Country Club celebrated one hundred years of continuous operation in March of 1998. That Galveston would be the home of the first chartered country club in Texas is not surprising, since the city was at the peak of its golden age.”

Oh and by the way:  Paranormal investigations occur frequently in the building (Mayfield Manor), call for upcoming dates!   Quess those ghosts aren’t

just fictional haunts.

Galveston Island Historic Pleasure  Pier

Galveston Island’s Historic Pleasure Pier is an iconic piece of Galveston’s past that has successfully made a return to the sandy shores of Galveston. The current Pleasure Pier has recaptured her prior charisma that made World War II service men, tourists, and islanders originally fall in love with her majestic rides, entertainment, and beautiful illuminations dancing across the waters. The pier has brought tourism boosts, entertainment, and a classy feel to Galveston.

The park is also home to tourist attractions, including the WWII submarine the USS Cavalla and one of only three destroyer escorts in the world, the USS Stewart. The remains of the WWI tanker S.S. Selma, the largest concrete ship constructed, can be seen northwest of the park’s fishing pier.

The Dordogne, France: Lascaux’s Prehistoric Cave Paintings

Some 17,000 years ago, on a wall of Lascaux cave in southwest France, an artist made a painting of a deer with fantastically elongated antlers.  To modern eyes, it looks like an exaggeation or a parody, but it was an accurate representation of an animal that early Europeans knew well.  Today we call it the Irish Elk, or Megaloceros giganteus.  The biggest males weighed 1,500 pounds about the same as an Alaskan moose, and they sported the largst antlers the world has ever known, 12 foot across, weighing 90 pounds.  They were shed and regrown annually.  The females were 10-15 percent shorter than the male,  without antlers.
