Though the founders of Cassadaga have passed on to the “spirit plane,” the quaint Victorian town remains the oldest continuously active Spiritualist center in the South

First of all I would like to apologize—-had computer problems and  between that and the Holiday I haven’t done my usual blogs—-Sorry—really sorry.

The history of Cassadaga

Cassadaga may be small but this town, that’s about an hour north of downtown Orlando and abut 25 miles from Daytona Beach,  is pretty famous—-many of us have been there for readings—-I  have gone there on more than one occassion and have sometimes had readings and others just wandered around the shops and had lunch—-small towns like this one are not something  you see every day.   But unlike most small towns it has a nice hotel and an excellent restaurant along it’s main street—Cassadaga Road (of course)

Cassadaga wass founded by Physics  from the north  well over 100 years ago and has remaind a Spiritualist colony ever since.    George P Colby came here from Pike, NY in 1875.  Pike a trance medium had traveled all over the US giving readings and seanances in the later 19th century. accompanied by his multiple spirit guides  including an American Indian and a German professor.

He eventually came to Florida then to the central area via the St. Johns RIver, he landed at that Blue Springs we visited last blog and following his guide’s directions and from that little trip we have the present town.    Oh and the town’s name means rocks beneath the water after a similar place in Yew York State.

Modern Spiritualism at a glance

Oh and for you that haven’t heard Spiritualism is considered a religion.  which makes the Association here technically the oldest continuously active religious community in the American Southeast.    and that religious community founded and developd the town you see today.   It’s interesting to contemplate.

I can’t imagione that the town you see today is too different from the original community—it is a quiet town with out even a traffic light.  A lovely place to walk about and enoy the peace and quiet yo’re not use to enjoy very often in our current crazy world. This place has 5 quiet wooded meditation areas, and when you compare this quaint little town to what you’re use to that’s alot to quiet time—without your mum’s enforcement.

I have heard it said that the town is full of eccentric spirits who seem to add to the whole ambiance.  I know my sister who is quite good at realizing spirits that are wandering  about found the town very occupied.   I find it a nice place to do a bit of  wandering and relaxing.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Ann Stevens House is recognized for both its frame vernacular architecture and its association with Ann Stevens, a remarkable individual who had a significant role in the development of the Cassadaga community. From its earliest beginnings in the 1890s, the Ann Stevens House operated as both a winter residence for Ann Stevens and rooming house. In the 1940s, it served war brides visiting the area due to its proximity to the Deland Naval Air Station. In 1993, the house was restored and operated as a Bed & Breakfast for 16 years, with a carriage house built in 1994 to provide additional guestrooms. The property was later restored and re-opened as a Bed & Breakfast in January 2013.

\

The Highwaymen:  A.E. Backus, a hit Southener during a time when racial equality was not yet taken seriously, cultivated friendship with Hihwaymen artists Harold Newton and R.A. McLendon.  In the mid and late 1950’s  other self-taught Afican Ameican artists started painting with Backus, or making frames in his studio.  The only Highwayman artist believed to have ever taken formal lessons from Backus was Alfred Hair.  Hair oganized the other (nearly 26) Highwayman artists and was instrumental in directing the “mass production” of Florida landscape paintings.  They painted landscapes with available paints and materials, framing them with molding from the doors, ceilings and baseboards.  Sometimes with the paint still wet, the artists would travel the state selling their paintings out of trunks of their cars (hence the name, “The Highwaymen).  By selling directly to the pubic, they set the standard for other self-taught African American artists who started painting Florida landscapes, using th highayman-like art motif.

So we walked a bit in Key Weird—-I mean West—-so how about trying another walk—how about London—Maybe?

Oxford Street

I’ve heard that millions visit this area every year but that it is not particularly popular with Londoners….because of the number of people that do visit here, especially at Christmas time.

You can arrive at Tottenham Court Road Underground (that’s subway to you Yanks out there) Station and then walk west you’ll find your self in an area of chainstores and the like  (at least it was before the pandemic-)—But if you head west  you’ll come to more posh places like

Selfrides is crazy lately and since June or earlier the store has been for sale and it’s future seems more and more confusing if the read the London press.   As you’re walking west you’ll fnd this classy store on the far side of Oxford Circus

Selfridges was opened in 1909 and the present building owes much of its decor to the 1920’s.

Oh and did you know what Oxford Road’s original name was?

This was a medieval track, part of ‘the way to Uxbridge’, and was formerly known as Tyburn Road. The change to Oxford Street took place gradually between about 1718 and 1729 and the modern name probably derives from former landowners the earls of Oxford.

And when it was Tyburn it was the route used to take prisones from the prison of Newgate

to Tyburn Gallows

The street then was even busier that it is today with all manner of citizens who got their jollies watching the condemneed make his last (at least concious and still breathing) journey.   These executions went on at Tyburn  for about 600 years or so–the last one was in 1783.

Right next to St Giles church on St Giles High Street, London is the pub called “The Angel”   (check out how this ties in to all Tyburn and the like—plus what being “on the wagon” had to do with it.)

Attractions and Places to Stop Along the Tamiami Trail/U.S. Highway 41

17 Attractions and Places to Stop Along the Tamiami Trail/U.S. Highway 41 between Miami and Naples

Druve west from Miami on Hwy 41, past the last rements of civilization  (some say) on Hwy 27 and from here you’re in the Everglades.  You will (or at least you use to) see a sign saying you’re entering the great swamp and a warning that you should be careful as many animals may be crossing the road.   The small business offerings will re-inforce where you are:  Air boat rides, alligator wrestlers and souvener shops—-and ever a few (hundred?) people fishing.  There’s also a pumping station that keeps the water a it proper level…..and there were several “authentic” Seminole Indian village along the way—at least the 30 years or so I last made the trip.

Miles and miles of tall—at least 6 foot sawgrass flats greets you from both sides with clumps of trees scattered about here and there (they call them hammocks—from the Spanish for “high, dry,  ground”.

This is a quote about the area from one of the sites you can click on below:

t’s not a good idea on this Alligator Alley, to get out of the car in certain spots. We once convinced a Texas friend of this, when she was halfway out of the car “to pull its tail”. Nor do you want to walk your dog along the road here, since Fido is an alligator’s favorite treat. Keep in mind that gators are extremely fast from a dead stop and can grab your dog, or you, within seconds.

Map of Tamiami Trail

Tamiami Trail: Scenic drive exploring Everglades

At about 40 miles the road turns northwest.   Instead of following it take the road to your left which is  Route 92.  You’ll come to a small lake and roadside park.  This is said to be a good leg stretching area—given the gators etc in the area I would be inclined to stay in the car—but living in Florida all these years has given me a deep respect (fear?).  Continue on the road till you reach what use to be Pinecrest: (best time on week day out of season for hunting).

Florida’s Real Alligator Alley

On your way to Pinecrest you will cross many bridges and its said that if you stop and walk across them you might well get a great view of the natural beauty of the Everglades:  as besides the gators  you might see a big Garfish going by , or a deer— or even a water mocassin—-this is the northern boundary of the

Everglades National Park

It’s about 5 miles until you reach

Pinetrest

once a boom town in the 20’s—click above to get a view of what is left there now—including a famous gangster’s digs.

Pinecrest Campground

After you leave the town the road goes west for a couple of miles past scrub oak and weeds under which linger the the remains of old homesteads, maybe a church or a school that once graced this area.  They even drilled an oil well here once but it has long been abandoned as it was too low producing to make a profit.

picture of wood ibis

Then the road  suddenly makes a sharp turn north  and if you look carefully you might see a wood ibis or two as this is their nesting area—they are the only American stork and you can  identify them by their blackish head and black wing tips.

Scenic Byway – Everglades Loop Road, Florida

The road from here to Hwy 41 leads under huge cypress and other trees over land that is crossed with many streams over which are small bridges.  Everywhere are turkey buzzards and Spanish moss all in all it sounds a bit erie to me —- but there are also bromeliad plant and even some rare orcharids may be seen.   Then you’ll return to 41.

Big Cypress Swamp loop Road off SR41 in Florida County road 94

This road is called the Loop  Rood and only a  few miles or so are paved and aren’t always a good idea in the summer or when there’s been a lot of rain—-before you decide to make the trip read this:

Loop Road: Storied road through Everglades is full of wildlife

Those traveling across Florida on the Tamiami Trail should take Loop Road only if they aren’t in a hurry.  Once on gravel, your speed will be under 20 miles per hour. Like the rest of the Everglades, the scenery here doesn’t shout. Appreciating the cypress forest and pine uplands requires quiet attention to the beauty of small things.

I’ve never been on this road but looked up some info and thought it sounded interesting—but a bit scary as well—so please research it a bit if you are thinking of going  —when you return to Tamiani Trail you can turn right—east and return to Miami or left and head to the Gulf.

One day back in the 1980’s, in a phenomenon that isn’t uncommon in this part of th state, a lot of the ground started disappearing (Corner Faibanks and Denning Drive) downward.  Fast.  In hardly any time at all, a lot of what had been standing here was sinking into a monsterous hole.  Everyone came to stand around and gape and later watch people with big mahines try to retrieve some of the things swallowed by Mother Earth.  Today the sink hole holds water….its a peek at how oh so-fleting material things can be in the face of nature…

The tree is salt tolerant tree that can grow up to 60′ high and it is said that if you cut one of its branches and stick it in the ground it will take root.  It bark was once used by primitve people to make loin cloths, fishing nets and mats from the fibrous parts of the inner bark

Edington:  This well is in a clump of trees byt the roadside, on the left hand side as one approaches the village from the station.  The water gathers in a well-made stone tank about three feet square, the top of which is level with the surrounding ground.  It is covered with two stone slabs, one of which, at the date of my visit in April 1915, had been removed, and the tank was half full of decaying laves as a consquence.  The water was three feet in depth, and ran out through a stone spout.  The flow was slight, and the water itself of a greenish milky colour, with a strong and horrible smell of sulphur…The spring looked neglected, and does not seem to be held in much repute…Horne, who then quotes an earlier source’s description of..a perpetual spring, which contains sulphur and …it is very cold… and has been found officacious in scorbutick, cases.”

Enterprise

The town which was in the days when it was founded the last Riverboat stop on the St. John’s River—-was established in the 1840’s and because the river was too shallow for boats the town built hotels for the passengers to stay and catch a train east to go on to Titusville.

It thrived into the 1870’s and was the County seat (of 3 counties:  Mosquito, Orange and Volusia), but things change and by the 1880’s Deland became the new kid in town—growing rapidly and eventually becoming the Coutny Seat, leaving Enterprise to waste away by the river that had helped make it great if only for a short time.
