The Story of the Marylebon

in the foot hills of Hampstead

North London

It is here that the Shepherd well poured forth some of the softest drinking water in the capital, as well as providing the main source of the old River Tyburn.  The The Seven Mile stream on the “bourne” ran south via Soho and St. James to the River Thames, but not before it had passed by the parriah church of St. Mary.  This, the name was famed, “St. Mary’ at the Bourne” became Marylebourne in Anglo-Norman French.

In Seminole County you’ll find another great State Park:  Wekiva State Park.

Swim in crystal-clear Wekiwa Springs where the water is a refreshing 72 degrees year-round. The spring’s natural open setting is perfect for spreading a blanket on the grassy slope, having a picnic and enjoying the day. Since its discovery in the 1860s, Wekiwa Springs (originally called Clay Springs after the property owner) has long been an attraction drawing visitors to the area.

This second-magnitude spring expels 43 million gallons (163 million liters) of water a day. The swimming area at the spring is just over a half-acre in size with an average depth of four feet (1.2 meters).

holy well or sacred spring is a well or spring or other small body of water revered either in a Christian or pagan context, sometimes both. The term holy well is commonly employed to refer to any water source of limited size (i.e. not a lake or river, but including pools and natural springs and seeps), which has some significance in the folklore of the area where it is located, whether in the form of a particular name, an associated legend, the attribution of healing qualities to the water through the numinous presence of its guardian spirit or Christian saint, or a ceremony or ritual centred on the well site. In Christian legend, the water is often said to have been made to flow by the action of a saint, a familiar theme especially in the hagiography of Celtic saints.

Off the Beaten Track in Somerset

If you read my blog much you know I have a real affinity for England and the UK and I particularly love the old places and practices and among those are the holy wells that scatter about the country side—I have visited them in Glastonbury for instance, and in my month long sojourn in Cornwall and have gone as far as distant Ireland when we drove about—my favorite being St. Bridget’s with its cooties, thanksgiving gifts and even a pub by the same name a short walk (and within  ones sight away.

Today we are looking at Somerset with it’s many offerings.

Parishes: Halse

It is know that there was a Holy Well here in Halse— at one time but little remains of it—other than a few traces of a stone wall,  that sets in a withy (English word and that is correct spelling) bed,  that  once circled about the well’s head.

Holford

St. John’s Well, the name is all I could find on this one and so if this was ever here nobody knows about it today…..but the village sounds like a fun place to visit.

Ilminster

This is a larger town said to have been of some importance during Victorian times.

It is also said to have two mineral springs one at Horton, 1 1/2 miles west as well as another at Dillington, about a mile to the.   NE.    One quote is said to have said that the town was known as Harcel well.

Again not much luck with the wells—but the town has some other interesting points.

Ok so I was not able to locate one well for you in all that topic—and it is an entire list that I found online–however in looking I found several interesting towns and villages that might well give you some enjoyable days out and about which is what this is all really about right?   And this is an example that an original idea which doesn’t work out is not necessarily a failure—just a redirection.

William I:  king of England

If you’re like me and know a lot of English History you know a bit about William —called among other things The Bastard and the Conqueror.  He was the first of the Norman Kings (from a Viking settled area in France called Normandy)

Hastings 1066 – Normans vs. Anglo-Saxons DOCUMENTARY

Where did William the Conqueror get himself crowned the new king of England on December 25th 1066?

William (formerly the Bastard) now the Conqueror was crowned King of England on Christmas Day 1066 at West Minster Abbey.  He appointd Goffrey de Mandeville I as pontreeve or chief officer of the cityof London.  Willaim also went out of his way to assure the citizens of London (maybe 10-12,000 then?)  that he did not intend to harm them.

And he also started work (finishd after 1080), the great fortified palace that stands to this day the White Tower, part of the Legendary Tower of London—which is amazing to see and a must as well.

This has just been a bit of William’s history, but it still give a bit of a look at his influence on the City of London.
