Cilgerran Castle

Cilgerran Castle,  one of Wales’s most picturesque castles, crowns a wooded gorge in the beautiful Teifti Valley.  This tranquil spot was once hotly disputed territory.  The castle was protected on two sides by steep drops, and in the 13th century powerful twin round turrents and curtain walls were built to defend its vulnerable flank away from the cliff.  Cilgerran’s history and setting have long stirred the imagination.  It has inspired artists for centuries and  was one of Wale’s first tourist attractions.

When I think of London Art Deco isn’t what comes to line.  But then the history I studied of Britain goes back hundreds even thousands of years beyond the roaring 20’s–the craziness of the time—the abandoning the long skirts and prim behavior of the previous generations..
I have some faint connections with the period—no I am not that old but I do remember an aunt who was notorious for being a flapper and persons who saw me after she had passed on said I looked so much like her—so maybe I got a little bit of that crazy era in my soul—who know.  But as usual I’ve wondered off the path—-
I read an article lately that this period in Britain the 20’s marked the first time they were influenced by the USA—Parties, drinking—crazy dancing and a sex surge—-yeah that’s really something were good at.
But I got to thinking next time I go to the UK it might be fun to visit some places where it’s been preserved  which Britain much better at doing than here.
The picture at the start of this article is from
On  London Park Lane
This hotel completed in the late 1920’s, has a Palm Court that is pure Art Deco .  And it doesn’t stop there—there’s a 1920’s themed tea including a 1920’s tea blend no less.  And if you’re really into it you can attend the 1920 evening event complete with 2 hrs of music, drinks and more all straight from the Gatsby age.

The gold standard of care
another hotel—-this one built in 1931, but with a bit of the 20’s roar is

Its Building is said to resemble an ocean liner.
Triple Threat: The American Bar at the Savoy won three top awards—World's Best Bar, Best... [+] International Bar Team and Best International Hotel Bar.

as well as the Savoy’s Court—it’s famous entrance—     both areas that are reminders of the age of flappers and all that as well
The Candlelight Club is a pop-up Prohibition-era speakeasy in a secret London venue completely lit by candles. We have no permanent home but put on scheduled parties at different locations. Each event offers an elegant cocktail menu, dining options, dancing to live jazz bands, retro-DJs and cabaret performances. And everyone dresses the part.
James Joyce’s Dublin Houses & Nora Barnacle’s Galway
By Viven Igoe
First published in 1990, this is a classic in the field of of Joycean studies.  Even when his places of residence were no longer dependent on his father’s alcohol vagaries, it is extraordinary that a creative artist with such a sense of place could not settle anywhere, it is as if his sense of his surroundings was so acute as to become unbearable.  Even his escape into the inner landscapes of his own masterpieces i not enough.  The bags must be packed, the books boxed up and a change made–nine changes in five years in Zurich is but one example!  For the true Joycean–Dublin is the city and Dubliner Viven Igoe is the guide beyond any other.
