Coastal tribes used “The Senator”, a 3000-year-old bald cypress which burned down due to arson in 2012, to find their way over land from the St. Johns River to trading grounds at Spring Hammock.Wikipedia

We left off here

211 West Warren Avenue

Clouser House c.1885
After living in a cottage at 219 W.Church Ave for three years and constructing numerous buildings for others, Josiah Clouser completed his home which exhibited his skills as a master carpenter. Owned by the Clouser family for many years before being sold, it has since been an antique store and a birthing center. An outstanding example of a wood frame Vernacular Style house, it’s Chinese Chippendale porch handrail and spindle work are unusual decorative features.

Just south of the historic district is a bit of the Islands—a Cuban Restaurant that has been at this location for many years and adds a bit of another culture to a day in the historic district.    You can walk or if you prefer not to cross 434 on foot—my co-explorer’s choice—or drive here—its only a block or so south on 427–on the left (Eastern) side of the street and has plenty of parking

Unfortunately, on February 29, 2012, Seminole County police arrested a woman who confessed to causing a fire that destroyed the Senator. Sarah Barnes and a friend were smoking(crack) inside the tree, and using an open flame as a guide. After the fire broke out, Barnes took photos and video with her cell phone and later showed them to several people, which led someone to tip off investigators. Apparently, she left the fire burning, and the tree was engulfed days later, burning from the inside out. Though the park is still open, the tree is no longer standing.

While the Senator is gone  there is still A memorial which includes interpretive signage along the newly renovated boardwalk, a playground piece that mimics a bald cypress tree stump and a clone of “The Senator” that was planted near the playground. The name for the clone is “The Phoenix.” Big Tree Park is also home to the Senator’s sister tree, “Lady Liberty”, an approximately 2,000 year old Bald Cypress Tree. This property was donated to Seminole County by Senator M.O. Overstreet and dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in 1929.

  Seminole Wekiva Trail,
Longwood, FL 32779
Paint The Trail
The nearly 14 mile Seminole Wekiva Trail is a paved recreational trail that has been designated as one of Seminole County’s Showcase Trails because of its length, beauty, and accommodation of many users. The section of the trail that runs west of the I-4 trail overpass to the County line at the Wekiva River is also a designated part of the Florida National Scenic Trail.

HISTORY: The Seminole Wekiva Trail has been built on the former Orange Belt Railway, at one time the longest railroad in the country. Peter A. Demens of Longwood was the driving force behind this railroad and, despite many difficulties, had the railroad built all the way to St. Petersburg.
