The tone of Hurston’s (Zora Neale) work is celebratory, rooted in a rural black South reminiscent of her hometown Eatonville.   Her characters act freely within their rich heritage and narrow social position.  Hurston influenced such later black authors as Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison.  Her autobiography is titled Dust Tracks on a Road (1942), and an anthology of her work, I Love Myself When I am Laughing and Then Again When I Am Looking Mean and Impressive, was released in 1979.

11 million persons visit here yearly—it is 3rd in popularity amount British park.  It is upland that right northward toward the Vale of Pickering and ends abruptly at an escarpment above Leeside.

Here there in the park are several deep cut valleys, said to be formed by water from melted ice at the end of the last ice age, that go into the farmlands of the Vale Pickering.  Between these Vale are broad ridges that have long been used as accesses to access areas north and south of the moors.  The Scots used the areas to move cattle and sheep from the border and into the English market towns and there are still signs  of coach routes between these valley.  And at one time there were major  (3000 miners) coal mining in this area as well.

The park also contains villages of stone cottages, manor house and even ruined abbeys.   The park has been in existence inc 1952 and covers about 550 square mile.  It extends along the North Sea on its east  and more than 25,000 people live within its boundaries—with one of the main occupations being sheep farming and the moor land  used to breed grouse.  Finally there are more than 1,200 mile of paths where you can walk, ride or cycle.

Miami (an Indian word meaning “sweet water”) was once a small settlement located at the Miami River’s entry into Biscayne Bay.

It was not felt at the time that the area had any promise of really developing despite it’s beauty.  The Spanish were still in charge of Florida in 1808 when the government granted a John Egan 100 acres of land on the Miami River.  Egan persuaded a few other settlers to join him along the river and thus Miami was began.

In 1821 Florida became part of the USA and James Egan (John’s son) claimed much of the land around Biscayne Bay as it had been granted to his father by the Spanish in 1808.  After presenting a case for his claim in St. Augustine, the Federal Government granted him 640 acres about Biscayne Bay.

At this time there were only a few settlers in the vicinity, but then came the Seminole Indian Wars

The population grew with the outbreak of the wars in 1836 and the US government established Ft. Dallas at the mouth of the Miami.  The establishment of the fort brought more settlers—these ones seeking the fort and it’s soldier’s protection.  And then when the wars were over both the settlers seeking protection and many of the troops that had been stationed here stayed on and Miami was established a established an growing city.

Leap Castle

Another blood-drinking Irish specter  is that of Tadhg O’Carrol, former owner of Leap Castle in southern Offaly.  Like Carrickaphouka, the castle itself has a sinister reputation.  Its rather peculiar name comes from the ancient Irish Leim ui Bhanain (the leap of the O’Bannions), which in turn, has its source in a particularly blood-soaked legend.

The Scoop on Corsica

Napoleon and Josephine were both born on islands, he on the craggy Mediterranean isle of Corsica, which had been conquered by the French in the year of his birth after fierce battles with the the nationalist locals, she on the paradise colony of Martinique in the Caribbean, where her family lived in luxury on a sugar plantation.  As if their landscapes of their birth somehow determined their character, he was blunt, forthright character of strong opinion and iron will, while she was a sensual, exotic, easy-going, and generous- natured woman.

Bainbridge Yorkshire Dales

Bainbridge stands astride the River Bane, which at just three miles in length  is said to e the shortest river in England.  It flows from Semerwater, which with a surface area of about ninety acres was the largest lake in the North Riding, to the River Ure.  Bainbridge was once an important crossroads where the roads from Lancaster, Swaledale and Westmoreland met; it was also a settlement for woodsmen working in the great forest of Wensleydale.

DID PIONEER FROM PINE CASTLE INSPIRE SCARLETT O’HARA SCENE?

There’s a story here that a Nancy Hansel Harris, an early pioneer left her ruined Georgia plantation to settle in the Pine Castle area in 1868 and that this “Granny” Harris was interviewed in 1934 about life in Georgia during the Civil War ….and as the above article tells you there are those that insist the the interviewer was Margaret Mitchel and that several of Scarlett’s adventures are very like those of Ms. Harris.

Will Wallace Harney

Will W. Harney, a former teacher and lawyer brought his wife Mary, who had become seriously ill after the birth of their first child,  to Florida and eventually home steaded on 160 acres west of Lake Conway. in 1869.  Florida did not help Mary’s health and she passed away early in 1870.  Harney stayed and did some planting but make a living writing a column for an Ohio newspaper as well as some national magazines and other newspapers

He obviously did well with his writing as by 1873 he had built (from local pine lumber) an English-style home with turrents that he named “Pine Castle”.  A community soon started developing around his estate.  When South Florida Rail Road extended from Orlando it went thru Pine Castle in 1881  on it’s way to Kissimmee and eventually to Tamps.

In 1916 Dixie Highway from Sanford to Kissimmee was paved further enhancing the area for new settlers.  By 1920 there were close to 300 person in the area year-round and others came for the winter.   With the Florida land boom of the 20’s even more came to the area encouraged by improved roads and the local prosperity.  The area continued mostly agricultural with citrus being the main crop.  By 1924 or 25 the area had a Municipal charter—-but then about a year later Florida did a landslide into the Depressions earlier than most of the rest of the country and the town’s government soon ceased to be and without collected taxes or actual government personnel,  it could not pay it’s bills and the charter was soon dissolved and to this day it remains an unincorporated section of Orange county.
