While history tells us that the Celtic warrior was so fearce he put fear into the heart of the Romans. It is said that thesee men fiought naked and often painted blue…….attaching with beseark screams and beheading those they bested in battle. I have even heard some theoris that the original grail in legends was once a human skull….and I am aware that there is evidence that my ancestor might well have been head hunters. The more modern stories and epics talk of cattle robbing and feasting warriors in a great hall celebrating vistory. And my Scottish family may well have stolen heads instead of cattle.

Even Disney has given us a magicl view of the legends in stories of King Arthur and Merlin a magical influence on the young King Arthur….Monty Python makes it th only way thye could silly and the story of the handsome knight, the beautiful queen and the betrayed husband gives us the classic triangle rather then the Druidish Merlin and the ancient kings who oftne gained and then held their throne (or more likely a rather crude dwelling and their lordship over the people and the blood lost by the Celts and more from those who opposed them or even tried to overthrow them. And the Druids were part of the religion that collected heads and sacrificed the loosing warrior and the like to their various gods.

There’s more to do and see in Florida than theme parks and race tracks.
In Sarasota we have the Ringling Museum, and House setting on 68 acres on Sarasota bay and flanked by US 41. Here you have not only a mansion but a circus museum and the Asolo Theater and don’t miss the art museum eiher or the 66 acres of land scaped grounds that surrounds them.

My favorite place at the housewith its beautiful and laviously large terrace where one can relax and look upon Sarasotaa Bay.
inside there is a 2 1/3 story living room….as well as 30 rooms, 14 bathrooms, a kitchen with pantries and to the south the servant quarters. The manssion also has a tower which was lite whn the family was home.
I have visit it several times and highly recommend a visit (which can be made into an all day visit and then some…
There’s a gaming room with a picture of Mable and John (the Ringlings) in costumes on the ceilin. Mable on enjoyed the house for 3 years as she died of diabetes complications in 1929, and Ringling remarrid 18 months later.
More recntly it was the setting for a modern version of Great Expectations — the house was even coated with removable dark paint.
Built in 1920 it opened in ’32. It has more than 10,000 objects classical and contemporary and is valued in the hundred millions of dollars. The last inventory I saw showed 1,000 orginal paintings, 1,000 prings and drawings as well as 500 sculpture and an abundance of decorative art—-and you must understand that only 1/3 of it is viewable in the 21 galleries at any given time.
By the 1930’s the Depression had taken their toll on Ringling and he had lost his circuses but managed to keep the art and mansion until pneumonia took his last breath—-in 1936, his 70th year.
Then things get really bisarre—for you see that for decades the remains of John, his first wife Mable and his sister Ida lay in temporary vault while the family tried to make up their minds not what to do with them but where. in 1987 they were moved to some unmarked crypts in Port Charlotte cemetery, and it was not till 1991 when by court order they were retuned to the estate and buried on the grounds.
Asolo is a 300 seat theater—–the buildingis a world Traveler….it was built at Asolo, Italy and was closed in 1930 and was reborn — still in ITaly as a movie theater. then 2 decades later the directors of the museum purchased and had it shipped ovr and re-assemled.
Finally my favorite the Circus museum….it was establish in 1948 adn renovated in 1989 placing it in a round building that resembles a Circus tent.

The Reputation of Boston Female Medical College was never stable and the college’s interest in the new wave of electric health practics such as mesmerism and homeopathy did not help to further secure it. Never-the-less, it survived . By 1856, the school had stopped awarding the midwifery certiicate although, its name to th New England Female Medical College and offered a complete course of study leading to a medical degree. Gregory was able to recruit decnt faculty, including the very famous and competent Waman physician Marie Zakrzewska. With her half, the school developed a clinical training program, which was unusual for any school of the time. In 1873 Gregory merged the school with Boston University Schoo.

Elanor of Aquitaine was a land owner on a magnificient scale. In 1137, at the age of 15, on her father’s death and with no brother to usurp her right, she inherited a vast estate stretching from the Rivr Loire to the Pyrenees including the Duchies of Aquitaine and Gasony as well as the county of Poiton. The land was greater than that held by the King of France.

Dunster Village is in Somerset England —–it is like most English village as it has a long and a very interesting history at that though what you might not be able to tell from its present location (a mile or so from the beach the town used to be called Dunster Haven in the 12th century however the water retreated and no more port—the beach is now about a mile from the town
The Normans built an unusual octagonal castle here in the 13th century which sets on a pyramid shaped hill at the end of the village. The gatehouse is original back to the 13th century but the rest of the buildings were redone in 1868-72 for a family who lived there for over 600 years. It has belonged to the National Trust sine 1976. Below the castle you can see a 15th c church St. George’s which boosts many fine features including a beautifu rood screen
The town then went to the wood trade after the waters receded the unusual octangular Yarn Market, built in 1609 to shelter traders and their wares from the weather. Damaged during the Civil War, it was restored in about 1647.
This town has so many places for its size even a working mill (fee) and next door a tea house with a garden. Also thatched corrages and Gallox Bridge, which was a cross over of the river Avill for medieval packhorses.
Outside of town is the West Somerset Steam Railway Station.
One of the many short (20 miles) railroad lines that take you through beautiful country and historic villages.
