Not something you’d think of when you think of Florida

located in the vicinity south of Titusville

The area has restrictef access—so it may not be a place you’ve visited even if you live there and/or know about it.

in 1982 while developing the WIndover Farms residental community —when they were preping the land a skelton was found during the removal of a peat bog.  A road going thru the area was rerouted and starting in 1984 thru 1986 there were three investigation done of the area by archeologists.  and human remains as well as possessions were found dating from around 4000 to 6000 BC

Half masonry,…..

From which the plaster breaks away

Like flesh from the rough bone, is turned

Upon a neck of stones; her eyes

Are lidless windows of smashed glass,

Each star-shaped pupil

Giving upon a vault so vast

How can the head contain it?

HICO, Tx.

And here is another out of the main stream place that might interest you… you can check out the Billy thr Kid connection too.

The town was established on Honey Creek (1880).  But later the residents moved to the Bosque RIver as that also put them close to the railroad.

Today the town has a Wild West themed Main Street.  Western music seranades you while you shop in the antique and craft shops—and don’t forget the cowboy art.

Downtown-Dundee

And we’re back to Florida to got from spine to Cowboys country—

As the Scenic Hwy (Alt 17) heads toward Dundee another citrus hamlet, it passes by the desserted gas stations and other areas of lost commerece  that once graced the highway (or at least it did when I drove by)  People who drove by in the 1920’s and 30s (not me I AM NOT THAT OLD)  got gas from pumps with hand leavers that forced fuel into 10 gallon glass cylinders that sat atop the pump when it could be draned into their car tanks—and NO IT WAS NOT SELF SERVE-—there were attendants who put in gas, checked your oil and water all that stuff–don’t forget the tires and you stayed in the car — or took a potty break  and then gave him the cash and moved on down the road.  No such thing as credit cards in the 20’s and 30’a.

Lake Menzie

Dundee

You’ll know that you’re coming into the town when the hwy makes a sharp turn in order to through the down town—something main roads did back in the day before Interstates and the like —and before downtowns became avoided for the class and cultural lacking shopping centers in the suburbs.

Dundee FL Aerial Photo, 33838, Polk County

Dundee started in 1911 with the coming of the railroad to this area.  Some say that the name came from Dundee, Scotland because it was in the Highlands too (well at least for Floria—this is a porch step for Scotland)

Land seekers in Model T Fords by Highlands Hotel - Dundee, Florida.

During the 1920’s land boom the Highlands Hotel  (now gone) in Dundee was the place for local buyers to stay while touring the area and purching land.

Historic Dundee Depot

Dundee was also the first new town platted along the railway line when it was built from Haines City down to Sebring and  the first depot was erected here.  Wm. W. Shepard  organized the Florida Highland Company as well as the town of Dundee.

Out of Dundee the road (still south) is just two lanes

Here the road winds around lakes and ridge hills—lots of green.  The perceptive are long, and you might even see an ancient motel—ma and pa places where the units are formed around a U.  Next town–Waverly and next stop Bok Tower.

Morgan Le Fey has been protrayed as both good and evil depending on the writer and the take on her behavior:  I particularly like this from TIme-Life’s The Fall of Camelot:

“In fact, Morgan was loose with the younger knights of Arthur’s court.  She had the certain age and knowingness that attracted them, and she drew power from their desire.  At first she concealed her activities, but as time went on, she grew careless–or perhaps too arrogant to bother with discretion.  She gathered her own circle of gallants, an it became apparent from the quarrels that developed among them and from Urien’s long looks, that the knights affection for her was far from blameless.  Here Morgan moved, quiet and smiling, clouds of ill will seemed to gather and factions to form.”

What’s your talke on Ms Le Fey—-Well?

Almost forgot the movie quote for today:

watch the YouTube—you’ll hear the quote and see why I love this silly love story–the most obvious in the picture below—-Hugh Jackman.

A jilted talk-show producer uses her chauvenistic roommate as an example of her ‘animal’ theory about men, but winds up falling in love instead in this romantic comedy. Ashley Judd plays Jane Goodale, a broken-hearted young woman who ghostwrites a column with an ‘animal theory’ about men. Her new roommate Eddie is a perfect example…until their attraction begins to grow!

The pedestrian entrance to Jesus college is known as the Chimney

Cambridge

Jesus College

Found on the site of an old Benedictine nunnery building from the early 12th c. outside the town walls by John Alcock, Bishop of Ely. of which still remains a peaceful and spacious character.

Found in 1496–in a 12 th century Nunnery of St Mary and St. Radegund–namely chapel and cloister attached to it.  The nuns refectory became the college hall.  Former lodging of the prioress which became the Master’s lodge.

The building has early stained glass windows by Ford Madox Brown.

There are traces of Norman Columns, windows and a well preserved hammer-beam roof in college hall.

Originally called the College of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist and the glorious VIrgin St. Radegund, near Cambridge subsequently acquited the name of the chapel.

Thomas Cranmer was a fellow here, but lost his fellowshop when he married the land lady of the nearby Dolphin College, due to the requirements of celibracy required to gain it back when she die in childbirth a year later.
