TINTAGEL CASTLE CORNWALL | Full tour of the real King Arthur’s Camelot in 4K

I have often told you of the steep stairs to visit the castle at Tintagel—-this was it—the stairs are still there but they now have a bridge across where this chunk of land use to be connected to the mainland which means that the stairs are no longer necessary.

Last time I was there they had planned the bridge but it wasn’t built yet so I missed the castle cause I’d hurt my knee and while normally walking was Ok these stairs wasn’t especially considering that is only 1/2 of the stairs you use have to go down one side then across a bridge and then another set of stairs up…OH MY!  Oh and there are still stairs in regular use:  Or at least they were:

Due to storm damage to the beach steps, there is no access to the beach and Merlin’s cave. We’re sorry for any disappointment that this will cause.

It did have a market established, with a Royal Charter, no less, in 1154 (today the site is occupied by the Bull Ring Shopping Center) in Corn Cheaping.  It wouldn’t be till the 16th and 17th century that the town became involved in the iron trade that stretched on into Wales and greatly helped the city develop.

During the Civil War It is said to have harbored many Puritans.   It continued its growth during the Industrial Revolution and has continue to be a moving and dynamic city —England’s 2nd.

Presidents memorialized

Which Capital Cities Are Named After a U.S. President ?

The easy one is Washington, DC.  The US city was founded with the Resedence Act of 1790–not long after George Washington was elected, which approved the creation of a Capital and seat of government on the Potomac River.  Now for the less obvious one.  Monrovia, the capital of Liberia,   got its name from the fifth president James Monroe, who was an ardent supporter for a colony of former enslaved pople to be establised in Afriia.  The idea was fulfilled in 1822, while Monroe was in office.

Tintagel, Cornwall, St Materiana’s Church

High atop the cliffs overlooking the village of Tintagel stands a historic treasure. No, not the castle for which this rocky Cornish headland is famed, but the 11th-century church of St Materiana.

Ok my last photo for the day—this church to me is the most fabulous (well beside the great people who live and work here) thing or place or whatever about Tintagel—-it was built in 1080 by the Normans and is still in use today—-part of the church is said to be an earlier Anglo-Saxon church—-there’s a standing stone in the church yard and a Roman mile maker in the sanctuary—people often say that Tintagel isn’t that much—but after I spent a month there in 2016, I say they should have stayed a bit longer and they might have learned to love it like I did.

Brief History of Austin

So welcome to Austin one of the cities along the Chisholm Trail—-I have read that close to this capital of the State of Texas (it was settled in 1837 on the Colorado river and becme the capital in 1839), back in the trail’s day it was close to where the cowboys drove the cattle across the Colorado RIver.  Surely an area of much activity and not a few injuries and/or losses.

The Chisholm Trail, Part 1 of 4

If you scroll down to a list of additional vids—part 2 is the second in line.

The Chisholm Trail was not the longest cattle trail but probably became the most famous because of the song “The Old Chisholm Trail”:”Come along boys and listen to my tale, I’ll tell you of my troubles on the old Chisholm Trail. Come a ti yi yippee, come a ti, yi, yea.”

As the longhorns slowly moved from pasture lands near San Antonio, Texas to the railhead in Abilene cowhands passed time by singing songs such as ”The Old Chisholm Trail”. The drive was slow, allowing the steers to graze along the way. With plenty of time to sing, each cowboy must have added to the song because experts today have found as many as 1,000 verses.

Aubrey Arms—a picture from some where in the UK—see below possibly Wales:  I need to label my pictures—but this was way back when I was using film.

The name Aubrey was brought to England in the great wave of migration following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Aubrey family lived in Brecknock, Wales, where Sir Reginald Aubrey was granted lands in 1088. The name is topographic in origin and indicates that its original bearer once lived in a place planted with elder trees. The name also may be derived from a batismal name meaning “the son of Aubrey.” In this case, the name would have been Albreda in the feminine form and Aubrey in the masculine form.

Etching of brewery working; two drays of horses pull deliveries away from the building.

Horse Shoe Brewery, London, c. 1800

The 15-Foot Wave Of Beer That Flooded London In 1814

It all started around around 4:30 in the afternoon when a clerk  at a brewery in  the St. Giles area of London, noted that one of the iron rings that held a huge fermentation tanks together had broken.   Evidentally this type of thing occurred yearly and he was instructed to make a note of the damage to be repaired and it would be taken care of later.

Jolly Splendid London Walk Around St. Giles and Charing Cross Road

The problem was that the tank that had suffered the damage was full and the damaged area was being pressed on by hundreds (or more) pound of pressure with no relief to the already damaged ring.  And this pressure continued until just a hour later when the tank burst and St. Gilees flooded with beer with a 15 foot wave of the brew that swept thru the streets.   The force of the spouting hot beer took out the 25 foot brewery wall and  ruptured several more tanks behind it.

In minutes, the brewery and the surrounding area (St. Giles) was under about 120,000 gallons of the dark brown beer and eight people died–several of whom had been attending a wake for a small child.  The brewery managed to keep brewing after the flood, but use of these big tanks was gradually replaced with other safer forms of containment.  It would move out of the area in the 1920’s and permanently out of business in the 1960’s.

Part of the brewery site is now occupied by

St. Chad’s Well

“Situated at the spot called the Island.  Difficult to say why this spring bears the name of St. Chad.  Over the rocks from beneath which the water comes is an inscription recording the fact that the mother of Major Frerick S. Savage, of the 68th Regiment, who died 31s March, 1866, in accordance with his wish, improved the spring and erected the memorial to him.  The place does not seem to have been called St. Chad’s Well until the above date, and it is not so named  either in the tithe map or in old deeds.  Tongue notes “General Tonic and Curative Purposes” here.

The light house is still active —the original facility was destroyed by a hurricane in 1848, only  a few months after its completion.  The island itself was said to be  been completely covered by the hurricane generated waves– The lighthouse keeper and his family were said to have rode out the storm on the island in a boat attached to some trees (that were submerged but did not break or uproot)  The light house was restored in 1849, but I never heard if the original lighthouse keeper and his family returned or not—my bet would be NOT.

I thought today we’re look some place that we haven’t spent much time in—-Texas—–BUT WHERE—–So I said Cowboys hey that’s a great take on Texas and then I thought—Cattle Drives—a bit above and beyond just the regular ranch routine and something that might well have left some memories that are there for those of us who look to find and share—and maybe even enjoy them—who knows.

Then I remembered one—possibly the most famous of all those trails where cattle were driven from Texas up to the rail head where they were put on trains and shipped all over the country to feed the need for beef.

So  I looked through some stuff I had kept from my trips to Texas where my friend had moved (I knew her from Michigan—then she went to Az. for her husband’s job and when they retired she followed her grandchildren (and her daughter and husband) to Texas and there her and her hubby retired.

Did you know that the Texas Longhorns (like early US wild horse breeds) are descendents from animals that the Spanish brought here in the 16th century.  The early cattle breeders were often the Monks in the various missions they had founded around the area, but eventually it became a more secular activity.

Songs and Tales of the Old Chisholm Trail – YouTube

But let’s get back to that cow drive and the trail  well I know from my reading that it had several names—but the one I know it by is the Chisholm Trail  and it ran thru the middle of Texas from bottom to top eventually ending in Kansas.

And what surprised me in my reading is that they drove millons of longhorns—those horns are enough to keep me away from them……and there were actually millions of them—at least 6 million from what I’d read….most of this was a large part in Texas recovery after the Civil War and did much to improve their economy, seriously helped with their recovery and was the foundation for their still strong cattle industry—though they haven’t done these major cow drives were for many, many years.

The spirit of the Old West lives on in cattle towns

I also found that there were many other cattle trails during this time—-so if you’re interested you might pick some place closer to your own home—-or pick several places  that you can drive to and really see the west and maybe even experience some of the real feelings and places of that era that we have long kept alive in books, TV and movies.

For Example:

Found this saying about Texas I

hadn’t heard before:

“Other states were carved or born, Texas grew from hide and horn.”

TEXAS STATE SYMBOLS

Known around the world as the symbol of Texas.

The End of Spanish Texas-Texas History #18

Did you know that Texas first pulled away from Mexico (1835-36) and stayed independent of every one for about 9 years when it was claimed by the US and annexed as the 28 th State.

Dec 29, 1845 CE: Texas Becomes a State

How did that work out?  Well not really great and by 1861 (to ’65) Texas had become part of the South—that had suceeded and formed the Confederate States and spent most of its freedom fighting Yankees.

Texas Civil War Museum

Oh by the way did you know the last battle of that war was May 12, 1865 and that the final battle of the Civil War took place at Palmito Ranch, Texas. It was a Confederate victory.

There were even some women who rode the trail—-several were disquised as men and you saw it in other places—like woman who fought for both sides in the Civil War.  There were also woman who owned the ranch and went along to supervise her economic investments—ahuuuh cows (Duh).

Old Abilene Town

The railroad, the cattle trails, and the legends of Abilene history:  Old Abilene remembers all the cattle trails.  Check it out.

So the war was over and a couple of years later in Abelene, Kansas a cattle terminal was set up as a point that cattlemen in Texas and the like could bring their cattle to the town and from there the railroad would take them to states interested in getting the beef.

And it wasn’t too long before the Texas Cowboys headed north herding their cattle to the terminal which was in full operating mode by 1871 with 700,000 cattle having reached the terminal and the drives continued on into the 1880’s when the use began to decrease and was at an end by about 1889.

There were multiple reasons for the trail(s) demise:  New rail road lines and spurs were moving into more states, including Texas which would prove so much more profitiable than the long drives that they had been doing.  Barb wire and home steads were doing away with the open plans which the cattle were driven through and an over-abundance of Texas Castle.

As you probably figured out without me telling you there were many dangers on the trail–stampedes which could be caused by a storm—both thunder and lightening being frightening to the stock being driven.   There are accounts of stampedes being caused by one of the cowboys sneezing and we haven’t mentioned the various carnivors that roamed these lands and who wouldn’t mind adding an extremely rare steak to their diet—oh and brush fires, especially in the drier years—presented a real danger to both man and beast on the drives.

OK next week we’ll take you to a major Texas city that was on the Chisholm back in the day—-hint there’s even a hotel here built by the proceeds of the trail which is still there and has been converted back to a lush place to stay….we’ll find you spots that are related to the trail and the drives—–but we’ll also find all manners of other stuff today so you have a well rounded vacation which should have something for the whole family or if it’s just you a wider variety to keep you open to all manner of what the world has to offer—or at least we’ll try.
