The original construction of Fountainebleau dates back to Louis the Pious who in 1259 built a keep and a convent hospital on the site of an old manor house near a spring called “Fountain-Belle-Sau”  whose name he gave to the keep.  In the course of time, it acquired the typical features of a castle such as fortifications and out buildings, built around a courtyard .

Gloucestershire Tourist Information & Travel Guide

Gloucstershire

I thought I’d look at this UK county (shire)  to just give you an idea how this (or most any area with long years of history,  can offer you so much in the way of things to do and places to visit or even discover and how history isn’t reeally boring—it’s just educators have made it that way for so many people.

Your guide to discovering the Cotswolds

Uley Long Barrow (Hetty Pegler’s Tump)

Prehistoric Sites in Gloucestershire

In ancient days trackways across Coswold Hills linked these  ancient burial sites together.  My favorite name for a site is Hetty Pegler’s Tump (no it’s not named after our former president).  Hetty Pegler’s is a Neolithic chambered long barrow which is about 3,500 years old.    The county has many of these sites and several can be visited—-but they not are fitted with electric so bring a flashlight (they call them torches here).

Chedworth Roman Villa

Roman remains in Gloucestershire and where to find them

The next major item of note in this area was the arrival of the Romans—guess they were looking for someplace to go as Europe pretty much had fallen to their killing machine called an army—the Roman Legions.

There are reminders and remains of the Italian invaders who many of the inhabitants of the country eventually joined becoming citizens of Roman  (St. Patrick for instance—yes he was English not Irish….but that’s a whole other story)  that had conquerored the land—and there are so many places related to the Romans in this county.

For instance if you travel from

Moreton-in-Marsh  to

Cirencester

You are following the Foss Way

an original Roman road  passed thru the country and past the ruins of Roman Villas (think mansions)—–not all those conquers were lowly soldiers.

In Cirencester don’t miss the Corinium Museum

with its beautiful mosaic designs from

the Villa at Yanworth

and also the iron ore works at Puzzlewood

Which is just a few of the highlights for this era the county has to offer

List of castles in Gloucestershire

The Normans (from a province Normandy—name from Northman– in France these warriors were desended from Viking who had settled the area years earlier)  invaded  England in 1066, occupied it and provided Nobles and th elete to hold it.  Oh and  they aso left many, many castles to remember them by.  They were originally led by William the Conqueror

As you might know he did suceeded and took over England and there are places to remind us of this violent time—His eldest son is buried in Gloucester Cathedral—-though my bet is that family who were responsible for this murder.

This county was the site of many of the Conqueror’s  Courts—rumor has it these were more for the hunting than for ruling related reason.

Waco sets along the banks of the

Brazos RIver, Waco

It was originally a town that came into life because of the cotton crops and related industry in this area before the Civil War.

But that war, which is not uncommon in the genre, made many changes to the era which resulted in the end of the cotton industry in the area.  But after the war the cattle ranchers helped rebuild the economy with Waco being a stop along that trail that took cattle north to the railroad to be shipped to city markets for the meat.  This trail called the Chisholm rebuilt the city’s economy.  There was even a bridge built (still standing) to move the cattle over the Brazo’s River–a single-span suspension bridge that at the time was one of the largest in the world

The Trail by the way started South of San Antonio, ran across Oklahoma and ended in Abiliene, KS–though the exact route taken has ben long lost to current knowledge.

By 1871 the first railroad tracks were built to th city (there would eventually be a couple more)—-and Waco was not only revived but reborn into a thriving commerical center.

History of the Conch Republic

Key West and the Florida Keys

By Brooks White

A Short History of the Conch Republic—The Mollusk that Roared

In 1982, the US Border Patrol established a military style  roadblock on the Overseas Highway, where all northbound traffic was stopped and searched for illegal aliens and drugs.  The ensuing well-publicized traffic jam effectively stymied Key West tourism industry.  Mayor Dennis Wardlow along with five local businessmen, hatched a scheme to save the Key West economy.  The “Conch Republic” was created.  The roadblock was discontinued and the economy was saved.  Today, the tradition of the Conch Republic revolution continues with a yearly celebration and appointment of various Conch Ambassadors.  To many Key West locals. both natives and transplants alike, the event symbolizes both the intense individualism of the Island’s people, and also the keen sense of humor they enjoy.
