North of Tampa:  Greek immigrants found the sponging industry in Tarpon Springs at the turn of the last (actually 19th) century and it been Greek to us ever since.  Visitors wander on Tarpon Docks  before stopping in at the Sponge Arama, where a museum and movie theater illustrates the area’s history and a gift shop sells souveniir sponge sculpture, seashell jewelry and other wares.  Sightseeing cruises and even Greek dance lessons may be on the agenda as well .

The Nutshell (Bury St. Edmunds)  would be worth a visit for the sheer strangeness of decor.  This is possibly the only bar in the world with a mummified cat hanging above it whle the ceiling is lined with bank notes from around the world and military metals fighting for space  with taxidermy on the walls.

Oh and they had turtle races in the

The Highwayman Art Show & Sale – Sunday, Day 2

\

The Highwaymen:  A.E. Backus, a hit Southener during a time when racial equality was not yet taken seriously, cultivated friendship with Hihwaymen artists Harold Newton and R.A. McLendon.  In the mid and late 1950’s  other self-taught Afican Ameican artists started painting with Backus, or making frames in his studio.  The only Highwayman artist believed to have ever taken formal lessons from Backus was Alfred Hair.  Hair oganized the other (nearly 26) Highwayman artists and was instrumental in directing the “mass production” of Florida landscape paintings.  They painted landscapes with available paints and materials, framing them with molding from the doors, ceilings and baseboards.  Sometimes with the paint still wet, the artists would travel the state selling their paintings out of trunks of their cars (hence the name, “The Highwaymen).  By selling directly to the pubic, they set the standard for other self-taught African American artists who started painting Florida landscapes, using th highayman-like art motif.

Walking Oxford Street London – Oct 2019

So we walked a bit in Key Weird—-I mean West—-so how about trying another walk—how about London—Maybe?

Oxford Street

I’ve heard that millions visit this area every year but that it is not particularly popular with Londoners….because of the number of people that do visit here, especially at Christmas time.

You can arrive at Tottenham Court Road Underground (that’s subway to you Yanks out there) Station and then walk west you’ll find your self in an area of chainstores and the like  (at least it was before the pandemic-)—But if you head west  you’ll come to more posh places like

selfridges london

Selfrides is crazy lately and since June or earlier the store has been for sale and it’s future seems more and more confusing if the read the London press.   As you’re walking west you’ll fnd this classy store on the far side of Oxford Circus

Selfridges was opened in 1909 and the present building owes much of its decor to the 1920’s.

Oh and did you know what Oxford Road’s original name was?

This was a medieval track, part of ‘the way to Uxbridge’, and was formerly known as Tyburn Road. The change to Oxford Street took place gradually between about 1718 and 1729 and the modern name probably derives from former landowners the earls of Oxford.

And when it was Tyburn it was the route used to take prisones from the prison of Newgate

to Tyburn Gallows

The street then was even busier that it is today with all manner of citizens who got their jollies watching the condemneed make his last (at least concious and still breathing) journey.   These executions went on at Tyburn  for about 600 years or so–the last one was in 1783.

Right next to St Giles church on St Giles High Street, London is the pub called “The Angel”   (check out how this ties in to all Tyburn and the like—plus what being “on the wagon” had to do with it.)

Trails and Roads  The drive to Kingsley plantation is along a scenic, narrow (and sometimes bumpy), dirt road.  Stately sabal palms line the historic road as it nears the plantation entrance  The historric site of today is on about 24 acres of mostly open land  One trail takes visitors from the planter’s home to the slave quartr, the return trail winds slightly through the orstd landscape.  Th total loop is apprximately one-third-mile.

Many of the horse farms in Marion County welcome visitors.  The FTBA will be happy to direct you to those that are open to the public…Visitors should always stop at the farm’s office.  Certain areas may be off limits.  Remember a handsome horse isn’t always friendly.  Keep your hands to yourself.  Visiting hours vary from farm to farm, but the rule of thumb is Monday through Friday from 9 am – 4 pm.
