Yesterday we looked at actions on our own part to avoid and why we (civilization as a whole cause I had no part of that—I’m not that old–stop laughing I’m not) think that way. Today the non-human living beings that bring us concern.
“Snakes, with their legless bodies and bellies to the ground have…been…a bad omen and…symbol of evil….since the story of Adam and Eve…Snakes have frequently represented evil…One of the feats of St. Patrick …was to banish all snakes from the…country…” http://tvblogs.nationalgeographic.com/2012/05/28/bad-omens-animal-superstitions/ But looking closer I found that this depends on the culture and even in Judo-Christian it varies with the writer. Read more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serpent_(symbolism) it’s too long to deal with here. So snakes bite and hid and frighten–hence their bad rap sometimes.
The Owl T. F. Thiselton-Dyer … Folk-lore of Shakespeare says that “from the earliest period it has been considered a bird of ill-omen,” and Pliny tells us how, …even Rome itself underwent a lustration, because one of them strayed into the Capitol. …a funereal bird, a monster of the night, the very abomination of human kind. Virgil describes its death-howl…Ovid…speaks of this bird’s presence as an evil omen; and …the same notions respecting it may be found among the writings of most of the ancient poets.”…“omens drear” in John Keats‘ Hyperion includes the “gloom-bird’s hated screech.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owl. Again we have a dweller in darkness—it’s cry is a howl in the night that frightens the traveler and awakes the sleeper.
“Black cats have played a major role for centuries in folklore, superstition, and mythology. Black cats in the middle ages were believed to be witches’ familiars, and some people even believed them to be witches incarnate. ” http://cats.about.com/od/catloreurbanlegends/a/blackcatlore.htm So take an accepted animal, paint it the color of the night and make it frightful? Humans are an easily influenced lot.

How well superstitions work: European Plague 1300’s– “certain communities killed off all of the village cats (color in 14th century wasn’t an issue) because of their supposed association with witches…irony …is… (rodent) parasites are primary vectors for… plague…removing the cats allowed the rodent population to burgeon and caused the plague to rage more…” lethally…http://faculty.washington.edu/walter/Killing%20Cats3.html
