It has often been said that Thomas Hardy “made Dorst his own.” and the proof of this can be found in his novels that remained loved and learned to these days. He was in fact born (1840) near
known as
Casterbridge in Hardy’s realm.
He eventually spent 5 years in London and then moved on to Weymouth
which is Budmouth Regis in his fiction.
But he didn’t come here to write—his true professsion was architect with a bit of writing—appaently his own true love.
and here in Dorchester, he designed and moved into Max Gate
and it was here that he departed this realm in 1928. and if you visit here you can tour his house and cottage and visit his last resting place or at least part of him was laid to rest at

A Walking Tour of Historic Longwood, Florida
If you’ve driven thru Longwood you might have noticed it’s not one of the largst cities of Central Florida, but what you might not know that it is one of the older ones—named for a Boston suburb when it was founded in 1878.
This was a popular area for settlers after the end of the Seminole threat in the Central Florida area and these settlers praised the area to northern friends thus encouranging more settlers. The town had small businesses, owners as well as other settlers who built houses and gathered together to build other town resources and support such as local government and churches and many of these are part of Longwood still as well as on the National Register of Historic Places.. Then nearly 100 year later the space industry and a certain mouse made for additional growth and of course buildings.
It is great at keeping its small town prescence while staying active and dynamic in a Florida area that continues to grow and prosper. And you can visit the downtown and take one of the walking tours to see the great old and new areas.

The Church Mouse
St. Michael’s has a church mosue. It’s on the lectern (the reading desk from which the Bible is rewad during services). The lectern was probably made in the 1940’s in the workshop of Robert Thompson (the ‘mouse man’) or Kilburn, near Thirsk. He used the mouse as a mark on all his work fom the 1930’s because one of his workmen said, “we are all as poor as church mice”).
The lectern was given to the church by a family in memory of their paents.

40 years before the British settled a colony in Virginia the Spanish came to Florida and planted an outpost for Spain. And thus was born the first European settlement in the North American continent and a guardian of the Spanish treasure ships that pass this way from Mexico and South America’s explorations—bearing the treasures taken from the native hoards.
The fort is said to have taken 25 years to build and was never taken by hostile forces—protected by a moat as well as its four protruding bastions of cannons. Not to mention it’s 30 feet high and 14 feet thick walls of coquina (seashells and sand that formed a solid over time and their own weight.
And to me the most amazing thing is today it is still there in all its glory and might and each day it is still mobbed by visiting tourist and from time to time someone like me who just loves the old and historic.
The Castillo by the way is open to the public every day of the year except Christmas. Oh by the way did I mention that this is one of my favorite places in one of my favorite towns in Florida…..try it I’m sure you’ll like it.

Quite simply, The Forest of Dean is one of the most unspoilt areas of England. 24,000 acres of ancient forest create a magial setting for walking and othr outdoor puruits. The Forest is also well known for the quality of work produced by the potters and artists who choose to live locally. Many draw their inspiration from the industrial heritage of the area–a fascinating story explained at the Dean Heritage Center.

Not all of London is so obvious
Now many of you know that London had the first working subway in the world—-but are you aware that this modern transportation is just the latest thing to rest under London.
is located in the part of the city south of the Thames
The crypt in this old London church has had its crypt excavated and statues of Neptune and a hunter god as well as an alter have been discovered underneath and which date to the Romans—an example of my premise that places continue holy places despite the change of the religion. Additional Roman finds have been found in the vicinity of the cathedral and in the Brough as well.
But lets return to London more proper
In Westminster early Iron Age wooden structures were found at Richmond Terrace.

And there are signs of a submerged forest at Bankside.

Then there’ Dagham marshes where a votive object was found after over 4,500 years being buried, under the edge of the marshes.
Digging the Thames with Mark Dion
and those Londoners are particular about the land they live on preferring gravel to clay—-the earlier settlements of Chelsea, Hackney and Islington being on that gravel while the newer districts of Notting Hill, Camden Town and St. Johnswood built later are on clay.
and back to Soutwark for something I forgot—a a holy well was also found under that cathedral’s crypt.

Bedlam over London
,
Bedlam: But visiting days continued and not merely to gratify the voyurism of the holiday crowds. The public exhibition of patient encouraged charity and added around 400 pounds a year to the hsopital’s coffers. As one of the sights of London and a funtioning mental hospital, Bethelham was rooted in the community. Visitors may have come to mock, but their entrance money contributed to the inmates’s welfare and reflected the sentiments of Robert Burton in the Anatomy of Melancholy. But see the mad man rage down night with furrings looks, and ghastly sighs.
