ST AUGUSTINE FLORIDA – THE OLDEST CITY in AMERICA (vlog)
Before the arrival of the first white settlers in the Goldenrod area, the last of the Indians had already been chased away by the Seminole Indian wars. During the Reconstruction Period after the Civil War, Florida came under federal military rule. By 1866 land in Florida was available under a more favorable federal enactment, the Homestead Act of 1862.
Goldenrod, Florida.
Goldenrod is noted for being the largest community in Central Florida that never became a city and was even splint in two when a new count was developed. it is situated east of Winter Park to Dean Road (or possibly beyond and south of Red Bug Rd almost to SR 50.
The first settlers arrived in 1870, they raised cattle while harvesting the local lumber and planted citrus. 1875 is when the first and transaction was recorded and settlers came into the area on oxcarts along a path that followed (approximately) Tuskawilla Rd to the south side of Lake Jessup ad on to George Brantley’s.
By the 1890s there was a rail road across the area named the Orlando and Winter Park Railway. It continued north to Oviedo.
The community was named for the masses of late summer and early fall flowers that covered the area.
By 1913 Seminole county was born and cut from Orange count and as I mentioned before it cut the community in two—but talks in the 1950s and 60s for incorporation to avoid annexation nothing ever came of it.
Today it still sits in central Florida a census-designated place (CDP) in Orange and Seminole counties in the U.S. state of Florida. The population was 12,039 at the 2010 census.
It has a chamber of commerce, its own historical society with a museum, a post office, garden club and civic center.

The most recent document discussing the name of Grassy Key is the U. S. Coast & Geodetic Survey letter for project HT 156 (1935-1936). The letter shows the name “Grassy Key” at Page 2 of Sheet No. 15. The letter states that “Local information states that the Key was named after an old settler and not because it was partially covered with grass.” A note to the letter states that Grassy Key had that name in an 1855 wrecker’s court record for the burning of the ship Concordia. However, I have a poor copy of the Concordia wreck letter and I believe it reads “Crawl Key.”

Follow The Dream, Inglis / Yankeetown, Florida – Levy Park
The town just “sprang” up at the river’s mouth, which at that time was the “intersection of Withlocoochee and Gulf.
It was named Port Inglis, for a Captain John Inglis, a Civil War hero whose family reportedly came from Glasglow, Scotland who skippered a ship from Spain to the river here.
It was later that a chemical plant was built 8 mile u the river from here which was originally named Blind Horse (don’t ask). As the roadways developed and shipping declined and with it the Port of Inglis. However Blind Horse, now Inglis continued to grow and is still a community to this day.

Heartbreak Hotel: Kenansville, Florida
Not much happened in the area until Flagler built his Florida East Coast Railroad construction of a 90 mile route between New Smyrna and Okeechobee in 1911. It passed % 1 1/2 and $6,000 to build a brick school house with an auditorium to replace the small wood-frame school at Whittler. The community adopted the new name to honor the home town of Flagler’s third wife, Mary Lily Kenan of Kenanville, NC.
Flagler’s first wife died and his second wife Ida Alice Shurds, was committed for insanity His affair with Mary and his legal manipulations and some say bribes to the Florida legislature resulted in both a major scandal and a divorce eventually and a new marriage to Mary just days after the court ruling. She remained married to him until his death in 1913.
