Sanford is in Seminole County  set on the south shore of Lake Monroe, which is formed by the flowing waters of the St. John’s RIver—One of the few major rivers in the world that flows north.  It is county seat of Seminole county and has a pleasant downtown set in buildings that speak of its history in this area.

But before there was Sanford the area was the site of Ft. Melon established in the 1830’s, named after Captain Charles Mellon who had been killed by the Seminole’–that the Fort was set her to protect the white settlers from.

By 1845 Florida had become a state and settlers began to come in with the movement of the Seminole further south.  But it wasn’t until Shelton Sanford, a former Minister for the US government to Belgium, purchased land here in  the post Civil War South.  He named the community after himself and when he had difficulty over employing the locals (he after all was a Yankee), he arranged for a group of Swedes to come to Florida to help set up the orange groves he planned to help finance his town’s success.  Freezes in the later years changed Sanford’s direction and by the early 1900’s it was a major producer of produce—but it’s name Celery City advised that Citrus was no longer it’s major crop,

In 1913 Seminole Country was cut out of Orange through the efforts of Forrest Lake—a several time mayor and a state representative for a few years as well.  Sanford became the county seat and has remained so ever since.

Sanford today has many restaurants, an art gallery, a museum with the town history outlined for all to see.  The historical post office is now the visitor’s center and  there’s also a book store with a nice vintage music section to name a few things that might interest you.

Beautiful Corbridge Northumberland Hadrian’s Wall Country

Corbridge, UK    is an ancient capital of Northumbia and a famous Roman Town.  It is about 3 miles from Hexham.  It is entered on a bridge of 7 arches built in 1674 with splendid views.  Corner Church yard Pele Tower –14th c was the resident of early vicars.  The town was founded in Saxon times—Roman stones were used to construct the village buildings.  The streets today are much as they were in Medieval times with shops, pubs and coffee shops.  The aforementioned bridge is 17th century and is the only bridge on the Tyne to withstand floods in 1771.

The Bars or at least a few of Key West

Hammerhead’s was described in the day as a locals bar with  “a softer image, more of a restaurant feel with jazz, so people can sit and enjoy some food and talk>  Key West Citizen.

I love the name of it’s larger–Lazy Lizard.  they even had one dedicated to Ernest Hemingway. and there was an old U-boat on their premises at 211 Duval   They had a local’s night every Wed. with free food and drink specials.

But alas Hammerhead’s is no more–the building is now the Home of Irish Kevin’s Bar and Restaurant.    

Key West is an expensive town to live and work in and as we see lots of places new businesses often fail—I’m not sure how long they were open but they are gone now.

When  Hooters came to Key West not all of the town were ready for it.  They already had a Planet Hollywood and a Hard Rock Cafe on Duval Street and many of the local business men were not eager for another corporate presence to rob Duval of it’s home town uniqueness —well that part was my feelings as well.  3 years before this invasion Key West Bight had block their attempt to open a restaurant at the airport.

A city commissioner at the time   : Carmen Turner said “Key West has, or used to have, a quirky, funky, small-town, kind of atmosphere.  I don’t think we’ve done a good job of managing that and maintaining it.”

But like Hammerhead’s—This too has passed and while there are still Hooter sites in mainland Florida—the one in Key West no longer exists.   It has been replaced by  Fogarty’s,

The Schooner Wharf bar was on Key West Bight

it set along the wharf and in 1992 the marina here held the largest fleet of vintage wooden boats in the southeastern United states.  It was established her in 1886 well before they had named the area the Key West Historic Seaport.

The Worthingtons, Paul (Cape Codand wife Evaena (Sweden), the couple who founded the bar came here on the Defiance (an 83′ schooner—it is it’s image that appeared on the Tee shirts and other merchandise sold the bar.    Infact the first bar they opened here was aboard the Diamant, a 120 ft. schooner in 1986.  By 1988 they had moved to to dry land.

The bar was not high tech or great architecture—there was a cement slab and a gravel parking lot.  while a diving board substituted for a bar top.  while the alcohol was in filing cabinets and beer in coolers.  This gradually devloped into a building wth the owner’s living upstairs and eventually a restaurant was added in 1996.

They added a stage which I remember listening to singers.  And the port held the Western Union which was one of the schooners we did cruises on.  It was heavenly

And now I know you’re waiting for the decree of the end—but n the Schooner Wharf is still there still selling food and booze and still making locals and tourists (as well as people like my husband and me that were there so often they called us temporary locals at the Green Parrot.

Lincoln’s Washington at War dealing with all manner  of life and history in Washington during the Civil War and Lincoln almost getting himself killed and don’t forget his dream about his own death.

Mangroves – Guardians of the Coast

Spuds for Splinters:  Potatoes can help to pull out splinters that are embedded too deep in your skin to extricate with tweezers.  Peel and wash a thumb-sized piece of a white or red potato and grate it (don’t use a sweet potato, it is too moist and sugary to attract liquid),.  Place the potato gratings into a piece of gauze bandage, wrap the gauze so the potato bits won’t fall out, and tape it to the area over the splinter.  Leave it for a few hours or overnight if possible, so the potato has time to dry.  As the potato dries, it draws bodily fluids to it,  That moisture carries the splinter to the surface so that it is easier to remove.
