I think that some of my favorite places to visit especially in Ireland and the UK are the ancient churches—-thought we’d look at one today.
Bath Abbey,

Perpendiular Architecture the church is often called the lantern of the West because of the light that floods into both the nave and chancel through it’s large clear window.
It was originally occupied by Celtic Nuns around 676 AD.
Edgar of Wessex was crowned King of All England here by St. Dunston—but depending on the account the date varies from the 7th to the 8th century. Edgar became a saint after his death and burial in Glastonbury.
By the end of the 11th century it was designated a Cathedral, after which it gradually declined.
By 1476 it was almost a ruin and by 1499 a new church was began by Bishop Oliver King—
He had had a dream (vision) angels clamberng up and down ladders into heaven and demanded a King to restore the church. Oh and to this day there are ladders of angels on the western front of the church. Along with this the church is famous for its interior fan vaulting
When you visit today you will find Bath Abbey, is adjacent to the Roman Baths and the Pump Room in the center the town.
Another reason that the church stands out is that it was the last great medieval church built before the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539—by Henry the VIII–best known for his multiple wives (I don’t believe he damaged any mistresses) many of which met a sad end at his pleasure.

Spitalfields, neighbourhood in the London borough of Tower Hamlets. It is situated just east of the Bishopsgate section of the former London Wall. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the priory and hospital, or “spital,” of St. Mary, which was founded in 1197 by Walter and Rose Brown.
A historically multicultural district, successively known as Petty France, Little Jerusalem and Banglatown, centred on Commercial Street and Brick Lane

Straddling the City and trendy Shoreditch, Spitalfields is an area that’s been steadily gentrified over the last couple of decades. The historic Old Spitalfields Market now houses a number of chain restaurants and fancy fashion stories, as well as some quirkier boutiques and more unusual market stalls. But though Spitalfields is a tad grander than it once was, it hasn’t surrendered its edge. Brick Lane’s restaurants remain London’s go-to for curries and bagels, and there are some wonderful old-fashioned pubs to discover on the streets linking it to the market at one end and Whitechapel at the other. Overall, Spitalfields is a fascinating patch of London which surely has something for everyone.

But let’s talk about a person
that was associated with the area

On Sept. 4, 1784
Jack Sheppard, was at age 22 set to hang at Tyburn,
Seems he had commited a serious crime—the theft of 3 rolls of cloth, 2 silver spoons, and a silk hankerchief (REALLY???!!!).
The day of his execution when they opened the door to his Newgate cell he was gone…..not that they should have been that surprised—seems this was his third escape.
His first escape was from of St. Giles Round House (off the roof)—where he warded off a persuing guards by throwing roof tile at them.
Then there was Clerkenwells New Bridewell where he managed to get thru a barred window and drop 25′ to the ground.
Jack was born in Spitalfield, one of the poorer sections of London and thus the home of many poor citizens of the city who resided close by to the market which was opened with a license from Charles II in the late 17th c. At that time it was a food market offering meat, poultry and vegetables as well as having a center for silk weaving (today the indoor market here sells organic foods, books, music, clothes as well as antiques and art.)
But back to Shepherd: He was born and named after a brother who had died before his birth. He further lost a sister and his father during his infancy. By 15 he became an apprentice carpenter—like his late father—in Covent Garden
.But what he apparently picked up (and who can blame for some one born and who continued to live in terrible poverty) was skills that helped him with his robbery pursuits.
But while he was good at escaping he wasn’t so good at getting away and after that escape from Newgate he was recaptured in less than a week. This time besides the usual barred and locked cell he was in handcuffs, and fetters that were chained down to the floor. But again he was gone in a short time.
I think he spent a bit longer free than the last time—still in London and partying and enjoying himself about that town until he was re-captured again.
Even back in jail things were interesting and he spent what was intended to be his last days with visitors that payed to visit him. This included the artist that painted his picture (you can see a drawing by the same artist at the beginning of the article) James Thornhill. Another visit of particular note was a drinking competition with England’s first bare knuckle champion James Figg.
The Execution was scheduled for November 16, 1724
The Journey from Newgate to Tyburn
It was said that 200,000 showed to watch the hanging on this date. Unfortunately the hangman found and removed a knife from Jack’s clothing.
And Jack wasn’t able to pull off another escape and he swung for his final act in life. The end of another short life in the slums of London.
