Well we’re gonna finish up West Volusia with a bit of a nod to the East where the big race—one in the good ole days I never missed a 500.  We used to camp and then we converted an old school bus into a living area with a platform atop where we use to watch the races and finally we bought a used RV and used that until I lost Mike and solf the RV and haven’t been back in person since—-I can’t complained I’ve had an interesting life—saw Petty’s last race at Atlanta and met all manner of drivers from Rusty Wallace my fav to Dale Earnhart—-Gone but never forgotten—-

We saw this building last week:

V. W. Gould Agency, Inc. – West Volusia Historical Society
West Volusia Historical Society Gould Agency

“In 1883 two young boys, Samuel Jordan and Wylie Swift, built a circular skating rink in a tent on this corner. It was a popular entertainment site when DeLand was little more than a pioneer village. Around 1885 this brick building was erected to house a confectionery shop. In 1940 it became the V.W. Gould Agency, Inc. Its founder, V. Ward Gould, Sr., was a lad of 15 when he moved to DeLand in 1885 with his parents. An entreprenuer of the first rank, he began his first Real Estate Agency in 1907 on W. Indiana Ave. where he ushered clients around in a one cylinder, hand cranked cadillac. Gould also was a gifted writer who left behind a valuable record of Deland’s history.” – West Volusia Historical Society

WHERE DID THE NAME ABBEY COME FROM?

We have always been impressed with the history and consistency by which Belgium has produced its beers.  This is best revealed in the Trappiste monasteries where monks produce what is commonly thought of as the greatest expression of beermaking on this planet.  We judiciously chose not to use the name “The ABBEY” because we did not want to minimize the importance of the time and care that these people take into their craft.

First the House that Hats Built

The Stetson Mansion

1031 CAMPHOR LN,

DELAND, FL, 32720,

This is a favorite of mine and a few friends and I did a New Year Eve Tour here.  Remember this is not a museum but a private home that the owners share on ocassion with lovely tours….I loved mine, check it out you might well too.

This Gilded Age estate has always been occupied and is still a private estate. It is not a museum or a home frozen in time, although it predates all other grand mansion museums in Florida. The home of Florida’s first snowbird and famous hat baron has always been occupied, but it was was hidden and forgotten as a great estate for 100 years. It has recently been rescued, restored and updated in a timeless fashion. Historic Tours are offered between February and July. Christmas Tours are offered Nov 1 to Jan 22. The Mansion is closed between Aug 1st and Nov 1st while we decorate for the holidays. USA Today’s 10Best named the Stetson Mansions’ outstandingly lavish adult “Christmas Spectacular!” the #1 Holiday Home Tour in Florida and #3 in the entire country!

Historic Past and Present Tours are offered Feb 9 thru July: Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri & Sat 11:00 & 1:30

Christmas Tours are offered 4-7 times daily Nov 1st, 2021 – Jan 22nd, 2022
