Mount Dora: Eight big weekend festivals plus year-round charm

One of Mt. Dora’s point of note is its location.  In Central Florida, almost equa; distance from the two coasts, it is also very high for a Florida (not the highest–that’s located along Florida’s central ridge on or near US 27), but it’s set on slooping can you say hills about Florida ground?  OK on hills overlooking Lake Dora which is just about 25 acres under 5,000 and is to the  to the west of the town.  The area is known for it’s splendid views and beautiful sunsets over Lake Dora…the lake is about 65′ above sea level while the highest point (at the intersection of Lincoln Ave and Clayton Street) in the town is 184′ , about 120′ above the lake

PS:  Mt. Dora is only 24 miles west  from Sanford—–on route 46—-So you can check them both out and then return to both for events and attractions.

Life and Times in Cross Creek: Memories and Reflections

Today Cross Creek welcomes visitors with the same prestine landscape that greeted Rawlings in the 1930’s.  The dramatic combination of creeks, forests, swamps and lakes remain, vastly different from the big cities of New York and Washington, whre Rawlings had lived.

Diocese of Kildare

 St. Brigid’s Cathedral 13th Century

Since the fifth century a Christian settlement has existed in the town of Kildare. The church, and later cathedral, of Kildare has been associated with St Brigid since its foundation around 480 AD.   Kildare derives its name from the Irish Chille Dara, or the ‘wood of oaks’, according to Thomas James Rawson’s Statistical Survey of the County Kildare. “Four miles east of Indian Key

is the site of

Aligator Reef Lighthouse,

a nine legged white tower capped by a black lantern 136′ above the sea.  Alligator Reef is diffrent from the reef to the north off Key Largo.  The coral reef in the northern keys is more developed than that of the southern Keys because Key Largo in the north acts as a barrier between the reef and Florida Bay, preventing sediment from the bay from reaching the coral reef.”

winter park near orlando

Why Winter Park, Florida Is One of the Coolest Suburbs in America

Today I’m gonna try to give you some facts about the rich and more city that  sets north of Orlando and has for many years.

The city was chartered in 1887 and was intended to b a winter resort for the wealthy—Northerners (now it’s for the same group but they’re now southerns—Floridians rather than visitors—it never lost that silver spoon) who could afford to go the distance to stay warm from the cold northern winters.  A peaceful place to relax away from the bitterness of bitter cold and punishing winds.

It has had a few name:

1858:  Original one–Lakeview

 1870  Renamed–Osceola

1881 given it’s current name Winter Park

PHOTO VIA ROLLINS COLLEGE

Rollins College

Florida’s oldest college and a premiere liberal arts college—founded 1885 by New England Congregationalists—who were trying to bring their style of liberal arts into education.

I bet you didn’t know they filmed 399 movies in the area—at least accourding to this—has anyone heard of these movies?

The 9 Best St. Augustine Ghost Tours

Walking the streets of America’s oldest city after dark is like stepping through a time warp.  In the quiet and the dak you can smell the sweat of Spanish horses, th aroma of garlic and olive oil waffing from the kithens.  You can hear laughter and soft voices speaking in foreign tonges.  Walking these streets at night can be eerie, even spooky.

Another of my pictures somewhere in  the UK

the Pubs name is The Five Alls—-

and here”s an explination for that:

Five Alls (Noun)

A name for many pubs.

Pub Etymology: In reference to five different social groups, each characterized as an “all”, the king, who governs all; the bishop, who prays for all; a lawyer, who pleads for all; a soldier, who fights for all, and a peasant who pays for all. Traditionally pub names had a pictorial represeatation the traditional image for the five alls had each figure in representative garb with his motto (” I goven all” etc) underneath.

Oh and my main picture at the beginning is Port St. Isaac in Cornwall.  That’s a post card and not one of my taking.  It is a place in Cornwall I have yet to see.
