Salado’s annual Spring Arts & Crafts Festival, hosting numerous arts & crafts vendors is held yearly in late March.
This population of the village is 2,126 ( or at least was at the time of the 2010 Census). During the time of the Chisholm it’s limestone springs and large number of fish made it popular with everyone from Indians, to settlers and even those pesky cowboys that actually transversed the trail and crossed Salado Creek here at the spring which is close to the present bridge.
Ethnic Diversity on the Chisholm Trail
Did you know that: It wasn’t : “Until the second
half of the 1870s—when
Dodge City became the
preeminent destination
for Texas herds and forced
trail driving even farther
west— that the Chisholm Trail
dominated the cattledriving scene. It was during
this period that Texas truly
became a land of cattle kings and
the image of the American cowboy
first seeped into national consciousness.”

The Salado Museum and College Park was established to preserve and promote the pioneer history of Salado and the diverse nationalities that settled this area. Chief among these are the Scots. One of the earliest group of settlers in the Salado area was the Robertson Colony established here in 1825, a group of 600 families most of whom were Scots. Because of this colonization, 16 counties in Central Texas are named for men with Scottish surnames.
Exploring the charm, history of Salado
History of Salado
The Chisholm Trail came right up Main Street, and the stage lines that served Central Texas included Salado among their stops. A wire cable suspension bridge, the first bridge built in the county, was built here in 1869 and stood until the great flood of 1900. Salado Creek has always been a mighty force in the history of this area and it was designated the first recorded Natural Landmark in Texas in 1966.

Salado, Texas – Bell County
It was first called Salado Springs by the Tawakoni Indians, who formed a settlement here long ago. In their language, the term “Salado” meant “salty.” Evidence shows that even before the Tawakoni were here, Paleo-Indian tribes were also known to utilize the waters of the area for thousands of years.

THE STAGECOACH INN
Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, The Stagecoach Inn was first built during the mid-1800s as a rest stop along the famous Chisholm Trail. Many famous 19th-century historic persons passed through the building at various points, such as Sam Houston, George Custer, and Jesse James. This quaint haven finally became a hotel in 1943, when Dion and Ruth Van Bibber transformed the entire structure into The Stagecoach Inn. Over the following decades, The Stagecoach Inn developed a vaunted reputation for its charming rustic hospitality. In particular, the Inn gained significant acclaim for its roadside restaurant, which still enchants guests today with its hush puppies, chicken fried steak, and Strawberry Kiss dessert.
