Sanford sits on the south shore of Lake Monroe at the head of the navigation on the St. Johns River. During the Seminole Wars of the 1830’s, the area was the site of an U.S. Army post name Fort Mellon. As settlers moved into the area, the town of Mellonville was established. With the advent of commercial steamboat service, the town became a distribution point for goods essential for the growth of Central Florida. \

CRUISES ON THE HISTORIC
ST. JOHNS RIVER
He passed away and his wife donated the house to the county who maded it into a hospital which it remained from 1920 -1955. |
See looking at it you would never know it’s history —ok and it’s said that the reason it fell out of favor as a health institution is a judge almost falling down it’s elevator shaft–but that could just be a rumor.

CHRISTMAS EVE CAROLS IN SANFORD
And Still more Oak Ave
902 S. Oak Ave—-no that church is not at 902 but the house that is there is a Folk Victoian (1899) that in 1906 was sold to S.O. Chase, co-owner of Chase and Company (Citrus growers and shippers–along with some veggies). The family eventually sold the entire block to All Souls Catholic Church in 1954 and the lovely house became the Rectory

Ok something that’s a bit more than Oak Ave 603 S. Myrtle
Might look familiar if you like old movies or are old enough to have seen it when it was new—–and yes even a north of Disney town can hit the lime light or appear on the silver screen. Talk about old—when was the last time (if ever) you heard someone say that about movies?
But back to the topic—here in town they call this the

608 S. Oak Ave
This house has something of a tie to the town’s founder Henry Sanford
Built 1887
By A Swedish Carpenter who was part of a group of Sweds brought from their home land by Henry Sanford to help develop this town Sanford (with a European Grid lay out) and eventually the orange groves. Oh and these workers were tradesmen and are believed to have built many of the dwellings you see in the town today.

OK here’s something that you might notice just looking at the picture—615 is the house on the right—but if you look around you will notice (hopefully) that another of the same (it’s original) architecture is on the left and if you were there you could see a third house of the same design all on this block. they were built as upstairs and downstairs apartments in 1922—-and they’re now single family homes. So while you starring note the bay window and large porch which were set up like this off what at the time were master bedrooms.
