Art in the Form of Film
with Paul Marino
Friday, October 15, 5:45-9pm

Beloved by millions, The Princess Bride manages to be endearing, scary, and funny, all at the same time. While at its core, the film is a cheesy love story with Robin Wright in the title role, the narrative centers around an odyssey taken by her true love, a farmhand, who sets off to rescue the princess from an arranged marriage to the evil Prince Humperdinck.

10 Beautiful English Market Towns

Hexham is a historic market town where  the sheep and cattle farmers of Northumberland gathered weekly near Hexam Abbey.

it is a town that had all manner of important visitors—it was attacked and sack at least twice by William Wallace and by Robert the Bruce as well—you Americans will remember them both from Braveheart.

Set in Stone – the Story of Hexham Abbey

The Abbey

Like most historic building in the UK this one has been destroyed and rebuilt many times in it’s 1,300 years of providing a place of worship for the people of Hexham.  Unlike many Abbey’s that were destroyed completely during Henry VIII (yeah him again) this church has continued and/or returned to it’s original life and remains a place of worsphip to this day.

Hexham Heads

Hexham Heads in hands image

The head on the left was made by Des Craigie to prove he could make little stone heads, the one on the right was made – rather suspiciously – by one of the boys who found the original heads (source: Screeton 2012)

In 1972 2 boys unearthed a couple of crudely carved stones in their yard here in Hexam….They were reported to be Celtic sculptures representing:  one a man and the other a woman.

Dr Anne Ross, A Celtic Specialist at the University of Southampton eventually received them.  From here on there were reports of the doctor being awaken late at night by lurking figure a man of sorts on  top and wolf on the bottom.   But of course it disappeared upon futher investigation.

With furture checking there were stories in Hexham of strange occurances including one the boy’s sister’s bed full of glass shrads and his neighbor’s reported seeing the wolf creaturre

The Doctor found a place to move the items (or they were lost—I have read both accounts)  away from her—it is rumored she got rid of all her Celtic head carvings at that time.

Nedless to say this was always a bone of contention as to what caused all this —-not to mention questions as to whether anyone actually saw anything really—this was even further questiond later whrn a previous occupant of the boys’ home town  claimed to have carved the heads in 1956 for his kids.

The Allendale Wolf.jpg
And finally one more wolf.

The Hexham Wolf  (also called the Allendale Wolf)
on December 10, 1904 there were reports of a loss of livestock–mostly sheep, many of them bitten around the neck and shoulders.   Not use to this kind of loss anymore people reacted by burning lanterns about the area as a means of protection of the flocks and hounds were brought in to find the beast(s?)—-but no one or dog seemed to be able to locate it (or them).
Thru December and over Christmas the hunt for the wolf continued.
Then in January the body of a wolf was found 30 miles away—-But no wolves were ever found or even seen in the Hexham area—some began to say that it was a werewolf.  On Januay 21 the attacks stopped and nothing more was seen or heard of th Wolf of Allendale.

WATER SPORTS

Rainbow Springs in Dunnellon:  The waterway is open to all.  A favorite pastime for youngsters (and uninhibited adults) is “tubing”  That’s simply floating down the river on a big old innertube.  You can launch your fleet at the KP Hole and drift on down to a prearranged destination (You’ll need to have a car waiting or you.)  You can rent them (tubs) from the concession at KP Hole.  Tubers should always keep an eye out for boat traffic.  Sunbathers or swimmers can enjoy the public beach.  Boaters can launch from the ramp at KP Hole, and head up river to see the springs.  No fishing is allowed at the springs, but fishing is permitted in other areas of the river,  KP Hole is off SR 41 about equal distance between Dunnellon and SR40.  Watch for signs on the east side of SR 41.

12 Best Things To Do In Tavernier, Florida – Updated 2021

As most of you may have gathered from reading this Blog—the Keys are one of my two favorite places in the world to visit—so thought I’d look around at something that I always enjoyed in the Keys—-though it might not be high on your list as to why you visited — it was a pleasure for my visits:  The Art Scene.

In Tavenier there was the Frame Gallery—-

I still find vague reference to it on the net—but nothing substantial—is it still there on the Overseas Highway (MM 91.9)  It featured local artists—infact that’s what the stories say that Janet Fowler opened it for.   Janet was the owner and a member of the Purple Isle Arts and Craft Guild.  In 1990 she bought a little framing company and developed it into a co-op for local artists to exhibit their art:  The Frame Shop Galley.   One of the artists she featured was Geraldine Green–a retired guidance councelor who did water color paintings of the sea and land as well.   She also featued Helen Burton, Farrel Yesner and Bob Jessup.

Father and daughter Boris and Ruth Kravitz opened this gallery in Sept. 1980.
Boris became a permanent residence of Haiti in the 1970’s and found that he loved the art there:  varied paintings that depict the daily lives of the Haitain people. some influenced by the religion of some of the inhabitants:  Voodoo.

Cross Creek:  Here, visitors also have occassion to inspect a typical lat 19th century “Florida Cracker” house.  Because of the intense, humid summer heat in this part of the country, porches, breezeways and numerous windows wer essential.  But there were times too, where the onerous damp weather could and still can–chill a person’s  marrow.  FIreplaces heated the bedrooms.

With the marginalization of witches and the destruction of Pagan systems, the evil foundation of the old entities tended to be transferred to witches.  Thus emergd th strega in ancient Rome.  The Strega, or witch, was first kown as the strix, a night-flying demon that attacked infants and killed them by sucking their blood.   Over a period of time the styix was identified as an individual who had the power  of transformation into the owls and crows and who in that guise attacked infants.  The styix then became the strega of mdieval Italy and the stigoi of Romania.
