While Edward triumphed in the south.   Aethelflaed led an army against Derby.  It has been suggested that the Viking army of Derby was absent at the time, fighting in the south against Edward.  If this is true, then it shows the good strategic sense of Aethelflad.  exploiting the diversion wrought by her brother, Aethelflaed took the Viking military centre without need of a seige.  But her entry into Derby was not completely unopposed.  Some of her clossest thanes were cut down within the gates of the town.  By the winter of 917 AD, the Viking armies of East Anglia, Cambridge, Bedford, Huntingdon, Northampton and Derby had ceased to exist or offered their allegiance to Edward.  Brother and sister planned the next step.

Boris Karloff: The Gentle Monster | Frankenstein Documentary | Classic Monsters

Boris Karloff 11/28/1887 – 2/2/1969

Born a son of a wealthy British diplomat—-his life was presumed to follow in his father’s foot steps—but as well all not the best laid plans don’t alway take monsters into account.  For at ag 21 Boris abandond the who aristocracy thing, eloped with the first (of Five) wif  and  escaped to Cannada.  H e made a living at heavy labor and the like while presuing his desire to be an actor—but let’s face it Cannada in the early 20th century wasn’t the best placee to persue that kind of a dream—He ended up divorced and pennilss at 30 and made the decision to try Hollywood.

In 1931 fate took a hand in all this when Bela Lugosi refused to take the role of Frankenstien (he didn’t want all that junk over his face) and they then offered it to Karloff who as we all know took it….and the rest is as thy say history, as the film became a classic and Karloff became the only actor consistently associated with the classic horror story monster (that was brought to by a young woman and first told to the like as Lord Byron.    Karloff went on to a full career and became a legnd of Hollywood Horror Movie Stars.

Three more places of rest to visit during this spooky season:

Bela Lugosi Picture

Bela Lugosi

10/20.1882 – 8/16/1956

Lugosi was a sucessful and serious stage actor in his native Hungary before he moved to America to persue a silent film career.

He landed the role of Dracula in a Broadway production and when Universal bought the rights to the story they also signed Lugosi up to play the lead character, making him a sucess in films as well.

For the next 20 years he played in all manner of horror films from White Zombie

to Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstien.

But there was a major problem:  he had an addiction to morphine and as that progressed  it became impossible for him to get jobs—his last work was with a transvestite

Director Edward D. Wood Jr.

–who actually is said to have pieced together scenes from some of Lugosi’s movies after his death, made

Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959)

.Oh and he is said to have used his wife—with her face shrouded in a cape to stand in for Lugosi in some of the  new scenes he made for the Plan 9 movie.

Lugosi was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery

at Culver CIty, California—wearing his Dracula cape of course.

It is said that Lugosi died a pauper—and rumors were that Frank Sinatra paid for the ceremony and a descent grave.

Lizzie Borden was accused of murdering her father Andrew Borden and her stepmother Abby Borden with an ax in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts, on August 4,1892. Lizzie Borden was ultimately found not guilty. This picture is on display at the original home, now the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast in Fall River. (Lisa DeJong/The Plain Dealer)

Lizzy Borden

7/19/1860 – 6/1/1921

Lizzy would never have been on this list of visits if her parents hadn’t ben killed during August 1892.  To this day, no one has ever been named as guilty for the murders.

Lizzy was their youngest child and she was arrested and tried (it was reported that both of her parent’s heads were exhibited as evidence at the trial!!!!!!!!).  Lizzy was found not guilty but it is said  that she lived the rest of her life as a recluse given the fact that everyone (except the jury) felt she was guilty–and she even had a rhyme about her giving her parents so many wacks with that ax.

She died at age 66 of natural causes (unlike her parents) and is buried at

Oak Grove Cemetery

765 Prospect Street
Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts, 02720 USA

There is a large monument there which says Borden—but that is her parents’;

Margaret Hamilton (actress) - Wikipedia
OK this is the last one—-
Margaret Hamilton
12/9/1902 – 5/16/1985
Now that’s not a name that’s known to many as a spooky or scary —like the last three we mentioned—infact she  was  working as a kindergarten teacher before she played her first movie role in 1933.  In fact she only got the job when the studio decided to go for an ugly whether than a slinky, hot character
and the part she played:
Margaret Hamilton was scary on screen in "The
If you saw the movie you might remembering comparing her character to Billie Burke’s character:  Glenda The Good Witch–
would you believe that Margaret was only 36 while Burke was 55.

“She also had parts in Universal’s The Invisible Woman (1940), William Castle’s 13 Ghosts (1960), the television movie Ghostbreakers (1967), and the Kolchak film, The Night Strangler (1973). She was even a member of the Addams Family, playing Morticia’s mother Granny Hester Frump in a few of the episodes of that television show.”

And sorry you can’t visit her grave as she was cremated and maybe scattered somewhere in New York?
But she spent her last days in
Salisbury, Connecticut,
A quiet early morning on Main Street in Salisbury, Connecticut.
Salisbury is a bit small so how about the entire county:
