Celtic festival of Beltane heats up in Scotland

Beltane — Now May Day

This is the 3rd  (of the agricultural year) festival of the Celts

What today we call May Day was then Beltane  (Batunn in Scotland)

which was celebratwd Apil 30 – May 1.

It involvs the death and rebirth of Bel (also Cernunnos if you’re Irish) who is then reborn. as the goddess’s son and then impregnates her and the cycle continue foreverr

Traditional activities for the holiday included picking flowers in the woods and speding the night there.

Dancing around the May Pole with red and white streamers:  Red for god and white for goddess.

Of course there’s a great bonfire (in Ireland the high king lit the fire on Tara and then the rest of the country followed suite).  Most of that was in the evening and night before—then when light retuned in Scotland the  village would lad the cattle out and about.

Green and prosperous, North London’s inner suburbs are some of London’s older outlying communities.  Hampstead and Highgate were pleasant country retreats for centuries before urban sprawl engalfed them and still retains their disdistinctive village atmosphere.  Hampstead is the busier andd more urbane, with a long line of intellectual associations from William Hogarth and John Keats to Sigmund Freud–while the most famous site in these parts is the unremarkable pedestrian crossing Abbey Rd

Sunlight is a good bleach and disinfectant.  Line-drying also helps remove stains without adding chemical agents to your wash.  The downside, Fading.   To prevent bright colors from fading turn the items inside out or hang them on bars in the shade.

We’re returning to Longwood again today to look at it’s history thru the houses and streets—something  that we’ve don before and as we discussed you can do in your own—or in other towns/cities you’re interested in.

Today we’ll look at W. Bay Street with a side step or so

241 Bay Street:  Mis Dolly House  (picture at the top f thi article.)

Built around 1920.  Nameed after a retired woman who livd her in the 1920’s and 30’s.  If you will look at the picture you will see that the porch has been enclosed—other than that the stucco-on-wood frame house retains its original bungalow charactristics complete with taperedd wood poch columns and a gabld roof.

Old Longwood School
390 Wilma
Built  c 1885
Two room school house  built some where between 1876 and 1883 and continuing in use until 1924. It was originally an unpainted, wood building of just two rooms that were divideed with an open walk way—a form of cooling before A/C.  It was closed in 1924, when Milwee Middle School (then Lyman School) was built south of town.
It then became Longwood’s City Hall and Fire Department and remained that until 1964 when a new city hall was built on Warren Street.
It then remaind empty until 1971 when Tom Pratt bought it and used it as a headquarters office for his rstaurant chain Gringo’s Mexican Rstaurants and the northern secton for warehouse space and storage of his antique cars which he regularly opened the building for people to tour, I presume to see the cars.  There was a fire in 1979 reulting in the building being badly damagd.
Sam Pratt bought it in 1984 and he did major reconstruction on it, returning it more to its original style.  He used it for offices and it remains that to this day
The original school bell is now located at the Longwood Historical Civic Center.

The LeRue House

133 Bay

This house is shaped like a “T”.  Built in 1885 By staircase builder and blacksmith  J.S. LeRue,   When the LeRue’s left , it was subdivided and turned into apartments and served as a boarding house for many years.

In 1970the house was bought by conservationists Grac and Robrt Bedford who did some restorations.
Finally the Brown family purchased the house in 2017.  Christine Brown is a local artist and after some extensive remodeling the house was opened as BarbedwireBrowns new Studio, gallery and classroom space at the historic 1885 LeRue house in Longwood Florida’s historic district.   It is still functioning as such.

St Giles Cathedral – Edinburgh

St. Giles has been a place of woship since the year 854 AD.  In common with most ecclesiastical buildings of this sxale, th finished product reprsents an amalgam of architectural styles embracing a lenghty period of time.  The four central pillars go back to 1120, while the Albany AIsle dates from around 1409.  The Thistle Chapel is a 20th c creation.  St. Giles is best explored on a suny afternoon as the cool light of the north filters through the breath taking west windows.

Restaurants In Key West

Blue Heaven

Corner of Petronia and Thomas

Bahama Village

Bahamian and American meals served in indoor or outdoor settings with jungle foilage—-with free ranging chickens and even a chicken’s burial ground along the edges of outside setting ara.  This is my favorite place for breakfast in Key West..

The building here use to have been a brothel—and the door upstairs have peek holes that the madame could open to see how much longer the current customer was going to last.

It also use to provide those chickens in the back for fighting with each other while the patrons bet on them.

And if that wasn’t enough entertainment for you well we got more—they had boxing matches also in the area where you eat outside now.  They would put up a boxing ring and they had some pretty famous boxes—OK only one but you may have heard about him—-Ernest Hemingway who enjoy all manner of mucho activity during his time lived in Key West.  When I use to go there Shine, one of the men who used to spare with Hemingway was still living there—he is no longer linving anywhere I am sorry to say—but people would get his autograph and the like—only in Key West I guess.
