There is a legend that in the days of yore King Oberon’s Fairy army fought against  the massed ranks of the pixies for control of the South West of the Isle some call England.  Alas Oberon  was greatly wounded  (some say tht to this day they ontinue to search for a herb to cure him)  and the PIxies claimed the southwest—so while faries rule in the rest of the island—the pixies continue to hold the south west.

Traveling about the UK is easily done via the various train services:

Making reservations is easy on line and I always set mine up in advance—Seats are reseved.  Many of the trains have four seats facing a table which is nice if you have a group—–I like going by train as you get to see the country side ratheer than a flight—and flying to the smaller cities isn’t an option, you can get up and walk around  to stretch your legs and you can purchase food and eat it at your seat or in the dining area.   There are certain places were trains don’t go or it’sa bit too long and complicated and involves changing trains several times —In those cases there are buses—which I haven’t tried but…..

Devon has a long history of being inhabited with Humans along with the pixies—-There are many sites showing the occupation of pre-historic man

and then the Celtic tribe of the Dumnonii

from which the books say that the name Devon was originated

And the the Roman invaders

who made their headquarters in Exeter

Eventually they withdrew and the Saxons

moved in—-but history appears to be rethinking   these settlers in England—-for  there can be no findings to confirm any of the supposed battles ever happened so what can I offer on that one?  Have to wait to the final decision on that.

With the Norman conquest came the beginning of the inaccessibility of the area a breeding ground for rebellion and  all manner of persons from Perkin Warbck’s attempt to become Monarch and the Tudors to which the local gave complaint of the impositon of the Protestant Prayer Book and the Reformation in gneral in 1549.

Plymouth was a small port city from which Drake (he sailed from here when he went to face the Spanish Armada,  Raleigh and even the Pilgrams as well as later explorers Cook and Darwin set sail.  It has growen over the years and has been rebuilt since Nazi bombing during WWII.  It now has more inhabitants than Exeter the capital.

The Hoe

This famous piece of turf is said to be the place where Sir Francis Drake calmly finished his game of bolws while the Spanish ships of the Armada were moving into the area in 1588.    Now it is nice park and parade ground surrounded by memorials to naval heroes including you know who.

East of the city this mid-18th c house is best known for its two opulent rooms designed by Adam.  There are also portraits by Joshua Reynoolds who born in nearby Plymouth.
Clustered around the harbor, this is virtually all that survived the war time bombs.  The cobbled streets and ancient buildings can still conjure up old maritime Plymouth with the ship’s chandlers still scattered amongst the antique shops.
