I liked the description I read about Duval (Key West’s main drag) —-Duval is “always crowded with pedestrian, bicycles, open air trolleys tours—nice for kids as well as adults….and it’s always fun watching folks walking around with everything from parrots to lizards perched on their shoulders. Now what kid—and even a few funner adult wouldn’t like that.
Things To Do With Kids in Key West
Key West is also fun to view—it’s architecture is original and I personally love it—take this house: It’s an eyebrow house/cottage, named for the over handing roof which shades part of the windows. According to the reports I’ve read there are only 18 of these houses in the world and yeah you guessed it: they’re only in Key West.

You can visit the
Key West Cemetery
there’s no charge and all kinds of interesting stones—including this one above where the family went broke doing stones for not only all the family but a whole lot of the pets. And it’s excellent to tour even without the big lizards that also live there now.

Mel Fisher Maritime Museum
“Today’s the day” was Mel Fisher’s mantra. Fortunately, his lifelong hunt for ancient buried treasure was realized before he died so his mantra held true. The day was July 20, 1985, when, after 17 years of searching, Mel Fisher and his crew recovered $450 million worth of buried treasure from ocean floor just offshore from Key West. The Nuestra Senora de Atocha and the Santa Margarita, two Spanish galleon ships that sunk in 1622, carried 40 tons of gold and silver, Pieces of Eight gold coins, Columbian emeralds, over 1,000 bars of silver and other gold artifacts.

This is a land of grey stone houses where large sheep wander about and vehicles venture forth with an eye out for the beasts who have an ancient grant to graze on the village green. This is one of the new villages that sets on these moorlands.

Built in 1875 by Edward Fuller Swell who was uncle to Ann Sewell, author of Black Beauty.
It and the village were used for several movies and TV shows but of most note is the filming of Harry Potter here for a short time : Goathland station was transformed into “Hogsmeade” station, simply by making the wall a couple of feet higher, and altering the names on the station, and the benches. The village became inundated with trucks, trailers, cameras, and reporters for about a week. The Warner Bros helicopter spent a couple of days doing aerial shots, and at play times, used to fly low over the school and wave at the kids. Several of the village children were used as extras, and my wife and two of her friends, were roped into becoming the wardrobe department, sewing “Hogwarts” badges on all the uniforms, and altering costumes, including Robbie Coltrane’s trousers.

I visited this area on a day tour out of York several years ago and the village was not large but we saw the sheep use all the little and big strips to fill their bellies.
