Holy Wells of Bodmin – Ancient Cornwall

Clearly, most people found the arrival of the new book more invasive than any of the earlier church reforms.  Visits to holy wells had continued even without official sanction, as did the observation of abrogated saints’ day.  Holy wells occupied a key place in Cornish life even under Elizabeth I.  Richard Carew’s Survey of Cornwall of 1602 contained a detailed recent description of pilgrims at St. Nunna’s well in Altarnun.    Long after such devotions had been outlawed and effectively fobidden in England, the sick were still coming for cures at wells in Cornwall (just as they were in Ireland, Wales and in the Scottish Highlands.)

Discover the Stetson Mansion: Florida’s First Luxury Estate

Last Chance, The End of Historic Tours

If you would like to see all three floors of this architectural gem and enjoy a guided tour of every room of the Mansion there are only two more months left to do so. This is our last season offering historic tours. No Historic Tours in the future are planned. If the third floor of the Mansion was on your bucket list then this is your last chance to see it!

We will devote our time to the most spectacular Christmas tours ever and our own personal growth.

In the future we will look forward to welcoming guests to our annual “Christmas Spectacular!” Tour times and tickets will be posted July 15th.

If you would like to know about Mr. Stetson you can read about him on our website or in the picture book I wrote about how JT and I found and saved the Mansion. In fact JT and I both wrote books about our story. We secretly wrote them on a cruise in 2013 and did not tell each other the contents until they were published. People who read both, tell us that the two different accounts dovetail together to tell one story. (The books are only available in the School House.)

In 1983  there appeared 60 volumes by one of the eviliest men who ever breathed:

It had contained more than 60 volumes of diaries written by Adolf Hitler and would be publishing them.

In the UK, the Sunday Times bought the rights to serialise the diaries.

On 24th April the paper’s front page read: “The Secrets of Hitler’s War” but historians had their doubts

I was there:  Hitler Diaries

Today, the book has sold almost a half million copies.

The town was founded in the 7th c and centered near the quay when Fresian potters from the Netherland settled here and set up the first large scale potteries in England since Roman times.  The pottery was traded far across England and this industty was unique to the area for 200 years.

Murder Musical Is Film Debut For National Theatre

This is the story of five ordinary women, from an ordinary English town, whose lives descended into drugs and prostitution, making them easy prey for one of Britain’s most prolific serial killers. It is also the story of how a small, rural police force, the Suffolk Constabulary, succeeded, under intense pressure, in catching a murderer who had killed more women in a shorter space of time than anyone else in British criminal history.

Conqueror and Bastard: The Life of King William I virtual

The Tower of London was not always a place where Kings got rid of their unloved wives or troublesome members of court.  It was once a  castle built for a  Frenchman (with a strong Viking heritage) First a Bastard and later a Conqueror that made England his own.

Mapped: Which Countries Still Have a Monarchy?

Monarchypolitical system based upon the undivided sovereignty or rule of a single person. The term applies to states in which supreme authority is vested in the monarch, an individual ruler who functions as the head of state and who achieves his or her position through heredity. Most monarchies allow only male succession, usually from father to son.

Isabella I

queen of Spain

No woman had ruled the combined Kingdoms of Castile and León, the largest single realm on the Iberian peninsula, in more than two hundred years. In many European countries, it was illegal for a woman to rule alone. On the rare occasions when women reigned, it was usually as regent for a son who was too young to govern. Isabella had a husband, Ferdinand, who was heir to the neighboring Kingdom of Aragon, but he had been traveling when the news of Enrique’s death arrived, and she had decided to seize the initiative. She would take the crown for herself alone.

Of course if you’re American (as in Yank—or US Citizen) you’ll probably aquaint this queen and her royal hubby as the Royals from Spain who financed an Italian explorer to the west to find a route to the Orient….or there abouts and instead found a large amount of land that had nothing to do with China—but he did presume and gave the  inhabitants a title (Indians) based on his assumption.

7 Spots Christopher Columbus Traveled to That You Should Too

But Isabella and Ferdinand were so much more than that—Did you know that one of their daughter was married to Prince Arthur—older brother of Henry Tudor—who died before he could become King and Henry married the widowed princess and eventually they had a daughter Mary—but no sons and Henry moved Heaven and Hell to get out of the marriage, making a lot of law and religious changes and divorcing Katherine in the process and her daughter would go on to be queen with the nick- name of Bloody Mary

Medieval royal weddings were lavish occasions with full traditional regalia, including gold and ermine, gifts and feasting. But these marriages were usually dynastic arrangements rather than love-matches, and the couple were sometimes still children. English kings often chose brides from among the French royalty, to seal a truce or to guarantee the support of the French king.                                                                    Medieval manuscripts blog

15 Things You Did Not Know About the Moors of Spain

The Granada War (SpanishGuerra de Granada) was a series of military campaigns between 1482 and 1491 during the reign of the Catholic MonarchsIsabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, against the Nasrid dynasty‘s Emirate of Granada. It ended with the defeat of Granada and its annexation by Castile, ending the last remnant of Islamic rule on the Iberian peninsula.

Spain – The Catholic Travel Guide

Isabella was a pious Catholic and in accordance with the Catholic Monarchs, pursued a policy of religious and national unity. She believed it was necessary to ensure doctrinal uniformity to the Church and with her husband started the Spanish Inquisition in 1478. It was dictated that all Jews and Muslims in Spain either convert to Christianity or be exiled. An estimated 40,000 Jews (half of the Jewish population) emigrated from the country. In an attempt to bring unity this caused massive religious tension and violence.    5 Facts You May Not Know About Queen Isabella I of Spain

Queen Juana I of Castile (1479-1555) is generally known as “Joan the Mad”1. Despite her nickname, Juana’s “madness” has often been disputed; she may have been locked up for political reasons only. Either way, she was a passionate woman, who fell madly in love with her handsome husband and continued to caress him even after his               death.

France’s beleaguered queen, Marie Antoinette, wrongly accused of uttering the infamous “Let them eat cake,” was the subject of ridicule and curiosity even before her death; she has since been the object of debate and speculation and the fascination so often accorded tragic figures in history. Married in mere girlhood, this essentially lighthearted, privileged, but otherwise unremarkable child was thrust into an unparalleled time and place, and was commanded by circumstance to play a significant role in history. Antonia Fraser’s lavish and engaging portrait of Marie Antoinette, one of the most recognizable women in European history, excites compassion and regard for all aspects of her subject, immersing the reader not only in the coming-of-age of a graceful woman, buaimedt also in the unraveling of an era.

7 best places in the UK to uncover the legend of King Arthur

Gawain of Orkney, King Arthur’s knight, was the flower of chivalry.  The Welsh called him Gwalchmet, or “Falcon of May,” and Gwalchgivy, Meaning “White Falcon,” to honor his valor.  When he was in his prime, it was said, the sun itself smiled on him.  Yet Gawain was no more than a man, and like other men, he was vulnerable to the magic weilded by the beings of the first world.  Once, he was entrapped in a spell for no reason greater than denying the ancient ones the honor they demanded.

Formerly a Bahama Village Church:  the Saint Stephen Methodist Episcopal Church was vacated in 1979.  Thereafter the building was used as office space, and residential space.  In 1986 it was proposed to become a restaurant and bar but that was just not felt to be proper by many, for a former place of worship.

Eventually the The Rock House Gallery found it’s place here and today pieces of art have found a place among the building’s bare beams and stone walls making for an exotic space for the Gallery which in addition to art works also sells furniture.

TOP 13 THINGS TO DO IN EDINBURGH

If you haven’t been to Edinburgh, Scotland  Why not?

Don’t get me wrong I love a lot of Areas in  Scotland.  Infact Stirling is another city and castle I adore. But Edinburgh with it’s castle set so impressively above the city itself ,

Edinburgh, Scotland – Video – Rick Steves’ Europe

A castle that has never been taken by Seige—and has been setting there guarding the town forever--or so it seems.

When you leave the castle you come to a large open space—this kind ofarea is common by castles–don’t want to allow anyone to have any cover when trying to sneek up on the fortress ya know.  And it’s good for entertainment like the  Military Tatoo  which I saw on my frist trip to

Statue of Deacon William Brodie
outside Brodie’s Close.

OK just so you don’t think the Royal Miles is just glee and giggles I’ll tell you about the Deacon:

First let me tell you that if you’re looking for a real life Jeckel and Hyde

You need go no further than

Brodie Close

But let me tell you about the Deacon—–OK we’ve gotta go back to the 18th c to meet one of the town’s most respected citizens who was eventually to be known as one of it’s worst.  In fact this differnce like night and day in his personality may have been where  Robert Lewis Stevens   Got his idea for Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde.

Brodie was born in 1741, a son of a cabinet maker who I understand was well respected—with no alter ego rising its ugly head in the father– and from whom the close was named for (this is a name for alley like exits off of the Royal Mile along which people lived and back in the day usually had a nice layer of feces and urine slowly running down hill on the walk way) and not his son.

The son himself was a skilled craftsman, as well as a member of the Town Council—a leader of the guild of Wright and Masons (from hence the Deacon title. )

dr jekyll and mr hyde 2002

But there was another side of this model citizen–where his taste for a MUCH BETTER life style which his income couldn’t bring him whetted his appetite and inspired his quest for another way to obtain the GOOD LIFE.

The Worst Murders and Executions in Edinburgh’s History

And being an intelligent, if not a very moral, man, he worked out a system where he plied his woodworking skills, as well as those of observation during the days while he along with a crew under his supervision worked at various customer homes and places of businesses.   Then after dark he would  break into these location and steal their goods to contribute to those aforemention dreams of luxury.

THE ROYAL MILE: THE MOST FAMOUS STREET IN EDINBURGH

But all good things and even a few bad must eventually come to an end and one of his crew—I presumed they work days and nights just like the master—got a bit sloppy which ended him in jail and even back then they were willing to make deals (wow)  and his flunky agreed to go King’s (instead of state’s) evidence to save his neck (and I mean that literally).

Brodie, it is said, to have heard about all that and attempted to flee but was caught and returned to Scotland where he was jailed, tried, and finally hung at Edenburgh Tolbooth.

Oh and least I forget the legend is that he reputedly bribed the hangman and fled to Paris.   OF COURSE.  I guess they hung a look alike????

And your final stop: Holy Rood

This site was originally a monestary (Holy Rood)  which added a guest house for the more promient visitors and this eventually became much more—today the abbey/church (which you can walk around) is in ruins and the guest house is lost (replaced or built around?—they did that a lot in the old, old days)–and is a Royal Palace (it’s close to Scotland’s Parliment as well which isn’t too far off the Mile) which you can visit .

Where to find Constantinople Today: On the Trail of Constantinople in Istanbul

“Constantinople, the glory of  the Greeks, rich in renown and richer still in possession”  So wrote a chaplain to Louis VII who accompanied his Master on the Second Crusade.  The city had been founded dsome 800 years earlier, in AD330, by Constantine as a “New Rome”–it too had a senate and was built on seven hills–and as a new capital was rapidly provided with the necessities of civilized life:  palaces and public buildings, a hippodrome, monumental squares, market and baths.  As befitted the capital of the first Christian empire, there was many splendid churches but no temples or pagan gods.

in 2016—-and you can go back to Mid May in this blog to see my 2 weeks in the UK and then a month here in TIntagel—-where I fell in love with the people who treated me so well, the town with its tourist all about during the day and then a quieter and more village atomsphere by night—the whole month of June I learned of village life from a room above a local pub—-I learned of the people—not as a tourist peeps at people walking by—but as you meet neigbors and people you live with and then return to their company—-and loved to hear–“-Are you sure you’re a Yank or an American?”

The Making of Tintagel Bridge

The bridge wasn’t there then–there were plans but not instititued yet—I have heard that since the bridge has gone up the visitors to the town have increased greatly—I am happy for them, but If I returned I would certainly miss the quiet and the evenings with people that I had met and who had been kind to me.    I would have infact used the Bridge though—as I’d sprained my knee a bit visiting some historical sites on my earlier journey and couldn’t do the deep stairs require to access the royal citadel of Tintagel castle the month I was there.

it certainly has my vote—-and if you haven’t seen it you really should I’d love to go back again.  But don’t take my word:

Sweet Nightingale | Songs of England #2 | Tintagel Castle, Cornwall

Mighty indeed was Tintagel, fortress of the Dukes of Cornwall, looming on a slate cliffed headland high above the sea.  No amy could breach its defenses.  Yet on a winters night between one year and the next, a frail creature, no more than half a man, stole away with the castle’s treasure and took it into his own keeping.

Postcards from Tintagel:  Drone Footage

Thus was the infant Arthur, heir to Britain, placed under a shield of magic, not to be seen again for fifteen years.  Merlin the Enchanter was the man who took him from the fortress where his mother lay.  Merlin was the man who hid him.

“If you don’t know where you’re going, any road’ll take you there” ― George Harrison

Before He Was Fab: George Harrison’s First American Visit

While I was sorting thru items as to what to take to the used book store to exchange for credits on new book—Yes my dears I still read books—old fashion but it does tend to energize the brain—try it some time you might actually like it!!!!!!!!!!

But regardless I was also trying to come up with a subject that might interest at least some of you and give you new places to get you off the net and onto real life and real soil upon which to walk.

And I  found the above book on someone that has long been gone but by many of us not forgotten….

Beatle George Harrison commenting about his first visit to the United States:

“I’ve wanted to go there for years, but I could never afford it before.  Also, this may be my last chance for awhile, ’cause it may be ages before the Beatles can get two weeks free again.

George Harrison Commemorative Mural

The “George Comes to Benton – 1963” mural is an one-of-a-kind piece of art created by California artist John Cerney. Beatles fans from across the country who traveled Interstate 57 through southern Illinois on their way to and from the total solar eclipse of 2017 had a chance to see the original work the week of its construction. Now a tourism site, Cerney and the City of Benton, published a postcard of the picturesque attraction which gives a brief description of how the project unfolded.

His two weeks there, starting on September 16, might have been the last carefree moments of an increasingly hectic, difficult and arguably tragic life. In America, no one knew who George was or cared. He was just Louise Caldwell’s skinny little brother, a 20-year-old with a weird haircut, who said he played the guitar and sang a little, and was gaga for American cars, especially ones with tail fins.

Probably his most exciting time in America is purchasing a 425 Rickenbacker guitar at Fenton Music Shop in nearby Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Local musicians Gabe McCarty and Vern Mandrel accompanied the Beatle to the shop to find the guitar was originally sunburst orange. George had it painted black before the purchase to look like John’s guitar back in England.

The Beatles – Here Comes The Sun (2019 Mix)

Help! was shot in London, Salisbury Plain, the Austrian AlpsNew Providence Island and Paradise Island in the Bahamas, and Twickenham Film Studios, beginning in the Bahamas on 23 February 1965. Starr commented in The Beatles Anthology that they were in the Bahamas for the hot weather scenes, and therefore had to wear light clothing even though it was rather cold. Tony Bramwell, the assistant to Beatles manager Brian Epstein, stated in his book A Magical Mystery Tour that Epstein chose the Bahamas for tax reasons. According to The Beatles Anthology, during the restaurant sequence filmed in early April, Harrison began to discover Indian-style music, which would be a key element in future songs such as “Norwegian Wood“. Filming finished on 14 April at Ailsa Avenue in Twickenham.[citation needed]

The ski scenes were shot at Obertauern, a small village in Austria. One reason this location was chosen was that the stars of the film were less likely to be recognised there than at one of the larger resorts with many British tourists. The Beatles were in Obertauern for about two weeks in March 1965 along with a film crew of around 60 people. Locals served as ski stunt doubles for the Beatles, who stayed at the hotel “Edelweiss”. Most of the crew were based in the hotel Marieta, where one night the Beatles gave an impromptu concert on the occasion of a director’s assistant’s birthday. This was the only time they ever played on stage in Austria.[5]

LIPA names studio theatre after George Harrison

LIPA is based in the former sites of the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys and The Liverpool College of Art. George Harrison, like LIPA’s lead patron and fellow ex-Beatle Paul McCartney, was a former pupil of the Institute, while John Lennon attended the College of Art next door.

there’s also George’s place of Birth

12 Arnold Grove is the birthplace and early childhood home of former Beatle George Harrison. Located in WavertreeLiverpool, near Picton Clock Tower, it is a small terraced house in a cul-de-sac, with a small alley to the rear.[1] Harrison’s parents, Harold and Louise, moved to the house in 1931 following their marriage.[2] The rent was ten shillings a week.[3] Here their four children were born: Louise (16 August 1931), Harry (1934), Peter (20 July 1940 – 1 June 2007) and George (25 February 1943 – 29 November 2001).

Friar Park is a Victorian neo-Gothic mansion in Henley-on-Thames, England, built in 1889. It was originally owned by eccentric lawyer Sir Frank Crisp and purchased in January 1970 by English rock musician and former Beatle George Harrison.[1] The site covers about 62 acres (25 hectares).[2][3] Features include caves, grottoes, underground passages, a multitude of garden gnomes, and an Alpine rock garden with a scale model of the Matterhorn.[4] Though rumour and tabloid reports often claim the building has 120 rooms, this was denied by the current owner, Olivia Harrison, while speaking to NPR Fresh Air in March 2004, at which time she clarified the number was somewhere around 30.[5]

If Not For You (Remastered 2014)

George has left us long ago and he was cremated and his ashes spread on various waters so there is no final resting place and a tree (possibly 2?) that was to be a memorial in California was killed by beetles (not Beatles)—-there was other talk of doing a memorial but nothing has ever came of it that I could locate—so the places I have listed all over the globe will have to do I guess.
