Harry S Truman Little White House Florida

Whitehead and Caroline, Presidential Gates: For years these ornate iron gates and pilasters, circa 1906, formed the ceremonial entrance to President Truman’s Little White House and were opened only for arriving presidents and dignitaries.  Truman would pass through these gates on his daily 5-mile spirited walks.  In 1987, Truman Annex Company opened the entrance gates to the public for the first time since President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 motorcade in the days following the Cuban Missile Crisis.  Stroll through here onto the public grounds of the former Key West Naval Base, de-activated in 1974.

THINGS TO DO IN BATON ROUGE

Red Dragon Listening Room, Baton Rouge, Louisiana: A nonprofit run by a former liquor distributor who lives to hear great music, the Red Dragon is filled with mismatched couches and rows of chairs in front of a stage. But don’t let appearances fool you. Some amazing musicians have played here, including Rosanne Cash and Guy Clark.

20 women Saints who made a mark on the Catholic World

Women’s religious orders (and branches of orders) in the true sense, were always subject to particularly strict control.  While the church awarded due recognition to greater mystics such as Hildegard of Bingen (1098 – 1179), and Teresa of Avila (1515 – 80) it required that female branches of “active” men’s orders–The Franciscans or Cammelits, for example–to play a purely contemplative role.  Women’s had to fight long and hard for the right  to perform “Active Christian” services in public, for example the preaching of the faith by Dominican sisters.  Most female monasteries “emancipated” themselves within the comfort of caring for the sick and destitute and later through teaching an area in which they often played a leading role.

See Why Ormond Beach is Central Florida's Hidden Gem

 Ormond Beach

Volusia County,  Fl

A group came here in 1873 or 75 from New Britain, Conn,  and the town was called by the same name. later settlers wanted something more associated with the area and it was changed to Ormad on April 22, 1880.  Seems like there was a line of Ormands that settled in this area , the first being Capt. James Ormond I who found a 2,000 acre plantation Damietta on a Spanish land grant.  He was killed around 1815.  James Ormond II died in 1828 on the plantation and his grave, which still may be seen near Ormand Beach,  bear the legend  “An Honest Man”
