Site of Palmyra

Palmyra, the ancient city of central Syria, attained real importance only after Roman control was established about AD30.  Later in its decline Palmyra was taken by the Arabs and sacked by Tamerine, and its ruins were forgotten until the 17th c.  The swirling desert sand, kept in constant motion by the wind, accelerates the ruins, slowly wearing down the marble and stone carvings.

Mammoth Fort Jefferson, the “Gibraltar of the Gulf,” is proteted by a seemingl insiginificant seawall.  Just as the reef has protected the harbor, the seawall was designd to protect the fort from storm waves and enemy attack.  Indeed, the seawall acts as an artificial reef-calm, protected water one one side and sea surge on the other.

Samhain (one of the four Celtic fire festivals) is celebrated on Oct. 31 – November 1 (Halloween).  It is the end of the harvest, the beginnng of winter and once marked the Celtic new year.  At Samhain, the barrier between our world and the Otherworld thins, allowing contacts between the spirits (faeries) and humans.  Normal rules of human conduct do not apply and one may “run wild”.  Great bonfires are lit and participants join hands and circle the fire, or young men take blazing torches and circle (sunwise) their homes and lands to protect them from evil spirits.  This was also a feestival of the dead and the church easily   able to transform these holidays into All Saint’s Day (November 1) and All Soul’s Day (November 2)

Virtual Tour of St Bartholomew’s Hospital and West Smithfield

St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London was origionally founded as part of the Priory of St Bartholomew’s in 1123, and still exists today.  making it the oldeest continually operating hospital in England (that is still on the same site). Other hospitals were established by local guilds and would only contain a few beds, while others were used for specific aliments such as leprosy.

Eleanor of Aquitaine, born c1122-24, is perhaps one of the most famous queens of medieval western Eruope.  Th only woman to be crowned queen of both Francxe and England, her long life, and position as one of the wealthist duchesses of western Europe enabled her to exert great influence in both countries.  Eleanor’s early life at the Aqutanian court afforded her a great education and sophisticated upbringing.
