The lost jewels of Bad King John

Laid low by illness, King John ended his days on 19 October 1216, after he had ruled for seventeen years, five months and 4 days.  He was ended a great prince but not a happy one and like Marius, he experiencd the ups and downs of fortune.  He was munificant and liberal to outsiders but a punisher of his own people, trusting strangers rather than his subjects, wherfore he was eventually deserted by his own men and in the end, little mourned.

Cannon  Ball House

Yes this is the can house that the restaurant is located

There is a legend that the cannon ball that is embedded in the wall of this house was from a cannon fired from Edinburgh Castle torward Holyrood Palace  where Bonnie Prince Charlie had taken up residence in 1745 during the Jacobite Uprising.

The facts are less interesting–seems the cannon ball was placed here to indicate the maxgravitational height off the first piped water supply to the city.

Walton Hall, Wakefield (also known as Waterton Park Hotel)

The Yorkshireman Charles Watson (1782 – 1865) was a pioneer among English naturalists.  When he was 22 he left the family seat at Walton Hall to take over the management of his father’s sugar estates in British Guiana.  He was fasinated by the local wildlife and spent the next 20 year scouring the tropical rain forest of South America, collecting specimens of birds and animals in a series extrodinary trips into the larely unknown hinter land, and penetrating thousands of miles of unexplored jungle.   What made these journeys even more unusual was that he did it in his bare feet, a policy he maintained in spite of the odd painful accident.

Anne Boleyn breakthrough: 'Unknown' evidence about Henry VIII unearthed after centuries

George Boleyn

How about a Queen orientated trip

Anne Boelyn was the 2nd wife of Henry VIII and the first framed (for multiple charges of adultery including incest with her brother).  She also bore his second living child– like the the first an unwanted female—but one that would out live and out perform as monarch her older brother……so let’s see if there is any places that might be of interest.

Inside Hever Castle

Hever Castle

Though  Anne was born in Norfolk (The original family home, a manor house in Blickling but that manor house no longer exists.  Having been replaced by a  Jacobean house, Blickling Hall)  this castle in Kent where the family moved when she was still a child and the buildings are the actual castle that she spent some (or all) of her childhood.  Infact there are still two of her prayer books here at the house.

You can even stay at the

Bed and Breakfast at the castle

St James’s Palace

Traces of Catherine of Aragon

St. James Palace

Henry ordered this castle built on the site of a former hospital for leper’s hospital–but it took awhile to get this built and there were and evidentally still are inscriptions here that refer to Anne—who was gone or at least going by the time it was completed.  Or was that Anne for a later wife named Anne?   He had 2 named Anne, 3 named Katherine, but only one named Jane.

The palace does not welcome visitors, but you can easily view the exterior and visitors are welcome to attend services in the Chapel Royal. Queen Mary I’s heart is buried in the Chapel (the rest of her body lies in Westminster Abbey).

Hampton Court

was originally Cardinal Worsley’s Palace –but when he failed to get the divorce from Katherine that Henry wanted he became a victim of failing Henry–and though he died of natural causes before he could stand trial (he was on the way when natural cause spared him the ax) for failing the king—by that time Henry and Anne were probably already enjoying this fabulous castle—-The Tudor part of the palace still exists (though it was said that when they built the newer part it was suggested that the Tudor part be torn down) and is my favorite part–glad they didn’t tear it down.

The Tower:  The Beginning and the End For Anne

Anne stayed in the Queen’s House prior to her marriage to Henry and she returned here to await her execution and is said to have watched her brother’s as well as other men she was accused of fornicating with and for which she was executed as committing adultery and back then when you were married to the King that was treason.   Unfortunately this building no longer stands in the tower

She was buried at the chapel in the tower and her body resides there to this day along with Katherine Howard—Henry’s other executed wife.

There are many other places that one might tie into Anne’s history—-this just gives you a taste of what you can find and then enjoy….just don’t loose your head over it all please.
