Auschwitz Birkenau Guided Tour from Krakow

Old CleeveRoodwater, St Pancras Well.  This is an interesting well, with stonework of great antiquity.  It has two slabs of stone over the top gable-shaped, but the stonework inside has fallen in somewhat, and is moss and fern grown.  There is a never-ceasing supply of beautiful water, rising from the red sandstone.  The well is in the garden of an old cottage which was once a chapel, though it has been reconstructed.  The cottage has always been kown as St. Pancras, but I should think it was older than the chapel.  It is locally known as the Holy Well.  This well is situateed about  a mile, or a little less, to the south of Cleeve Abbey...(Horne)

Some Pubs of London

Cock and Bottle

like here London has some pubs to add to its gone lists—here are some that are   and some that aren’t

The White Hart, 1810

The White Hart, 2008

The White Hart

Use to reside quite recently at

121 Bishopgate

London.

It certainly existed as The White Hart in 1377. However, it was rebuilt in 1480 and 1829. It closed in 2014, and its facade was integrated into a nine-storey office block

White Hart Drury Lane

191 Drury Ln,

London WC2B 5QD,

This pub is said to be the oldest licensed facility — or at least the various pub building that set on this corner here of Drury and  High Holburn  for many, many centuries are combined as the oldest…..originally rather than Covent Gardens this was the village of St Giles (13th c).   The pubs that have sat here have been called the White Hart since the 15th c.   There was plague here in the 16th and during the 16th and 17th century only the rich  resided here and these varied from Cromwell the man responsible for the death of Charles I to Nell Gwynne-–a former actress who became the favorite mystress of Charles II who returned to the throne after his father’s murderer’s death….I so love English history.

By the 18th century the street and thus the pub’s fortunes had fallen into disrepute, poverty and vice as well as being inhabited by the bottom of the social stratta, a form of hell that the world of that time was all too familiar.

But through out all that time and thru wars and rumors of wars —and people and the new ages the pub(s) here have endured and continue on….I find this all amazingly interesting.

How did British pubs get their names?

Boar’s Head Tavern

East Cheap

This is another of those pub names the English so loved and there were several (maybe still are?) by this name which is said to have caused a great deal of confusion.

This was the setting for Henrry IV which featured Sir John Falstaff  and the building set near the London Stone which  some say might well be a Roman  milestone….didn’t look like one to me….  By the 16th c it was ran by Joanna and Wm. Broke.  but alas the great fire destroyed it in 1666.  It was quickly rebuilt and continued as a pub until the late 18th century when it closed and the building was used for other purposes and was finally demolished in 1823.

Oh but all was not lost—-the pub’s sign was saved and evetually ended up at the current Globe Theatre where it survives to this day.

The Devil’s Tavern

a private bank

The pub was famous (or maybe infamous) for it’s sign which showed St Durston the saint of this parrish—pulling the nose of the Lucifer with a pair of pinchers–thought the authorities threatened to have it torn down.

It was frequented by  the likes of

Ben Johnson , playwright among other things.   He was in his elemernt here as other creative types were said to have spent much time here as well.

The establishment is said to have ben old in 1563 and it was demolished in 1787.

Literary Edinburgh: a bibliophile’s guide to Scotland’s capital

The Scottish Capital is not just tied to a single author either. Over the years, it has been the home and inspiration to writers as varied as Dr. Johnson, biographer James Boswell, the Poet Robert Burns and the novelists:  Robert Lewis Stevenson, Muriel Sparks, Ian Rankin, and J.K. Rowlings to name a few.  Their Edinburgh is still visible to us today if you know where to look.

Trerice Manor and Garden

Trerice—National Trust

Historic manor in the parish of Newlyn East, near Newquay—set in a secluded valley at the end of a winding, narrow lane.

This manor house was rebuilt by Sir John Arundell (1571) on the site of a previous house.  His father  (John too) had served Henry VIII, his son Edward VI and Daughter Mary I.

The Family were Royalists during the Civil War and lost much until the Restoration under Charles II

In 1802 the Arundell Family’s 400 year residency ended and the manner passed to the Acland family who restored the property’s great chamber.  They sold it in 1915.

The house like so many of these great and ancient old mansions is said to be haunted by ghost.  Particular to this estate is said to be the spirit of a seduced, pregnate and suicidal servant girl who lowers the temperature and is accompanied by the scent of lavender when she appears in a room, her favorite haunt being the library.  There’s also a stable boy who has been seen in the courtyard.
