Day 4:  A Day on the Moor

Dartmoor has been discribed as “Wild and mist sodden open moorland..a bleak and islolated.  It is this moor that provided the eerie back ground for Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Homles thriller in 1902:  The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Dartmoor in called the Hub of Devon, it is a high granite plateau full of wilderness and bogs with its main occupants sheep and ponies.  It is one of Devons National parks.

On Dartmoor you will find some inviting areas though—for instance the heather—-but wait—the heather is usually found on beds of peat, which at best is wet and clingy, but it has also been known to suck down people and animals alike—OK forget the heather.

But the archeologist tell us that this land was once the home of a major area of dwellings in ancient time and there are the remnants and ruins of all manner of these homes as well as the sites of these occupant’s burials on what is now an empty wasteland.  And it is from these places that the myths, and legends have develop as well as the ghosts who thrive here according to legends.

of course you can include it on a larger tour—usually the time is limited but these kind of tours give you a taste of what there is to offer and let you decided if it’s interesting to you or not to return for a more indepth trip later.

Of course that goes for any area that you anywhere you might be interested in.

The wheelpit at Huntingdon mine

With the middle ages we see the rise of industry on the moor with miners coming for  tin, cooper, silver, lead and iron—oh and almost forgot magesium.    As is common for this bit of Britain tin mining seems to be the thing that did it.    I have read that the tin miners were at that time—the law of this land–that they actually had their own parliament and made the laws for this forsaken area  of England— They even built a castle in 1195 to serve as a jail for those who failed to abide by the law they had passed.  Interestingly enough, the crown which had control of the land here as a royal hunting preserve allowed them to do all this—which I think is a good indication of how imprtant they (and above all their tin) was to the country.

but then it was expanded and high security prisoners left there.

Birch Tor, with the Warren House Inn in the distance

So here you have almost 400 square miles of heath and bog and high granite mooreland.  There are even parts used by the army– and closed to the public—-for such things as a firing range.
The moor grows steeper, rising to ‘tors’—which are piles of bolder—-which at one time were much higher–but over the hundreds, neigh thousand years, have been eroded by the rain and wind of this  place.  And the people who once graced these places used these stones to build houses and protection from those same winds and rain.
But the moors are also a place of beauty with rippling streams and their cascades as well as waterfall.   You will see thatched cottages  in valleys about the margins of the moor with cream teas and warm fires to allow the walkers to rest and warm themselves

Wild camping in large groups is not allowed in Dartmoor, and neither is using a large tent. A lightweight, discreet hiking tent would be advised. Furthermore, you must camp at least 100 m from any road. The ground where you pitch your tent must be left undamaged, and you must take all rubbish with you
