Cambridge Round Church

This church is among the oldest buildings and one of only 4 round churches in England (however there were 14 medeval round churches in Egypt)–it stands on the corner of Church and Bridge Church and is managed by the Christian Heritage.  It no longer functions as a church.

It was built in 1103–possibly inspired by the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.  It is full of Norman designs.

 

 

 

It would later go from a WayFarer’s Chapel to a parish church served by Austin Friars for the near by hospital of St John–now a college

A rectular chancel was added in the 13 c and rebuilt in the 15th.  It has a fine angel  roof carved in that period as well.

 

In the 19th c a major restoration was done after part of the round nave collapsed

During WWII in 1942 the East window was destroyed by German bombs  and was replaed by a portrait of Christ triumphent over death and suffering with the cross depicted as a living tree with leaves which are for the healing of nations.
